Internet is the greatest thing happened in past decade that changed the way we communicate, the way we acquire information and knowledge and way we interchage it. Internet has opened the milky way of opportunities for everyone, impacting in every sphere of life almost every day. It is a boon to professionals like me who otherwise would have suddenly experienced a vacuum in life after retirement from a highly active life style. Actually for many, Internet for many act as an aphrodisiac, and not as a depressant. Kudos to people who ventured to make the internet, available, accessible, adaptable and affordable to everyone.

To serve the net & get the usefull matter about the subject concern .... patience is required whichm is already lost.

Depression is a state of mind, body, action, thought, somehow not in sync optimally to the individual's design and installed capability at a given point in time. This happens as our brain is controling all activity of our body it is said that depression arises due to chemical imbalances resulting in miscommunication among neurotransmitters. Internet is a medium for exchanging information, depends as to what kind of information the person is looking at, may create depression. For me internet is a happy medium I look at only those sites that gives me happiness. Is life all about exchanging information on internet? they are other activities too, how you get along with people, how you manage time, personal hygiene, coherence of thought, decision making, socio-cultural maturity, perception and expression of love, hate, anger, joy, playfulness. Depression can disturb few or major functions of (body) life. I don’t think internet can elevate depressive minds, as depression disturbs the level of intelligence rationality which in turn can disturb physical well being, thinking process as well.

Internet is a good option to share and expand one's knowledge in all areas. Even chatting s not a solution for depression. Once chatting gets over depression starts accompanying. BEST WAY TO FIGHT WITH DEPRESSION IS TO INVOLVE WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS. GO OUT WITH THEM TO REFRESH YOURSELF. ANOTHER WAY IS TO LEARN SELF CONTROL. IF SOMEONE LEARNS IT BY HIMSELF WITHOUT THE GUIDANCE OF EVEN A COUNSELOR, HE IS THE STRONGEST PERSON AND CAN NEVER BE DEPRESSED

More internet, less sleep which implies there is a high risk of being depressed rather than fighting depression. A study was conducted in China (published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine On August 02, 2010). The study involved 1,041 teenagers aged between 13 and 18 years in China's southern Guangzhou city who were free of depression at the start of the investigation. Nine months later, 84 of them were assessed as suffering from depression and those who were on the Internet excessively were one-and-a-half times more vulnerable than moderate users. Researcher Lawrence Lam reported that "People who spend so much time on the Internet will lose sleep and it is a very well established fact that the less one sleeps, the higher the chances of depression."

When a person is depressed, we should encourage her/him to talk and not to be closed on herself/himself. By talking to others one can find solutions to the root cause of the depression. Internet can lead to further depression.

Internet can only be a means of "time pass"...where one can visit various sites, read blogs etc to pass free time... as far is fighting depression is concerned, internet would be of no use... for example consider a person who thinks of himself as a lonely ignored creature...now each time this person would log in to to check his email id or even sign in to his social networking account, there are slim chances of finding some new email or post...in such situation this person would feel even worse about himself and get into further depression... In my view, internet is only a means of entertainment and knowledge...it can neither fight nor cure anything.

fighting depression through internet???....probably in the short-run...but never in the long-run...theres nothing like a personal touch when you are depressed...yes, we have web-cams and so on but they are not even an inch closer to getting a personal touch to let go our depressed state of mind....but yes, in the short run, social networking sites, chats and dont know what not may get you out of your depressed state - but for a while.

no..Though internet usage has become the necessity of time...often we tend to spend more time on social netwrking sites, which for shorter period of time leaves us on feel good effect...but on long run its has a darker side.. addiction to internet kills the vitality of a person..eventually leading to a point where it affects there daily activities..n low real life social interactions...increasing depressive tendencies often.

Like everything else internet also has some merits and demerits . For cases like fighting depression its Demerits are far more than its merits. While Surfing the net you may come across some content that may even disturb you more. So the best Way to fight still remains to take a day of from the work, take stroll in a peaceful garden or even talking to some loved ones.

Excellent question....As a medical doctor, I have been trying to understand the mental state of people by creating a blinded self profile in order to minimize bias; but so far I could not reach at any defined conclusion, particularly my initial observation suggests Indian males and females behave very differently, most females are quite transparent in their conversation, communicative and are quite focussed, which may be seen initially as an act to get some relief from stress or depression, but eventually I feel that may lead to addiction to internet in order to regularly seek relief as a safe bait with possible adverse effect on mental health in long term; while Indian males are mostly not transparent & quite dubious in their conversation, difficult to know what exactly they are seeking through internet chat; The people from other countries are in general quite transparent, clear in perception and are open to questions what they are seeking; thus, cultural & social upbringing, gender sensitivity, age, etc does play a role in defining cause-effect relationship between internet, chat and depression. so bottomline is "watch out and be careful" it may be addictive and quite harmful for mental/physical health. It is better to have a good personal chat or conversation or messaging text with someone whom you know and can confide,a true real friend or if needed a clinical psychologist to seek better outcome either online or preferably through audio-visual or direct person to person contact.

I agree with your opinion but Internet also gets you depression. Today social networking site are becoming more personal and started affecting the users. For example you might be in abroad and you find your loved one's status message as not keeping well !! it disturbs you the entire day.... So according me its a source of depression.....
