Here we are fighting against corruption in India.  Corruption + India are age old buddies now. We are actually clueless on how to stop corruption. The cleaning process should start from us. Every individual has to understand the importance of being corruption free. The bill will be of no use if in case the members , the insiders too become corrupt.. Its not about the bill, its about the WILL.. Will to change..

Corruption is uprooting the "Janlokpal Bill" is the punch-line of the day! What a metamorphosis we have seen over the year! The movement is getting crushed from all possible directions, and the team, once looked so strong, is weakened! That's the power of corruption!

Every thing should somewhere and some way with the Lokpal Bill at least a modest beginning can be made and with the passing time it will take care of the corruption to a great extent.

Today if TV is not there the entire country will not know about the corruption. O.K the news paper are there but it is not that a strong medium so that the entire Country will know about not only corruption but a lot many other things.

Well! I think that we importantly need LOKPAL BILL because to build any building strong and allow it to touch the sky its neccesary to lay a FOUNDATION that's what Jan lokpal bill is......anything does'nt happen at the stroke of midnight but yes the day will come when we will proceed towards a corruption free India and the initial to it is LOKPAL......

Although their are doubts because it,s not institution which can root out corruption but the person in the institution who can do it but certainly it,s a small step towards that because it will send a message to those corrupt the signal that public can not be taken for granted anymore.

Why not?? This is an act to empower the common man.As of at present, it is felt that more areas of accountability should be covered to make it more effective. More importantly, it should be easily accessible to even the lowest in the rung of our population. Acts and laws can only be effective if they are practiced in right earnest. "Chalta hai" attitude must first be totally eradicated-We are deeply routed to this attitude for ages and that is the root cause of all our problems. For eg: In a case of accident, how many people are ready and forthcoming to help the victim?? We are all scared of the existing laws and don't wish to get entangled with the headache of facing future consequences because of law. So what you expect in turn??? the answer is "What you sow, you reap"!!!! The reason why there is so much corruption is because of our reluctance to go through the process of law.

Sulagna,

It is unfortunate and failure of a generation that is tempting you to feel thus.

The very fact that this country is not already in dumps is enough of a indication that there exist staunch honest alongside most corrupt in this nation. There are selfless people even in this age and times of naked consumerism who are not interested in money, name or fame, let us not put their efforts to shame by thinking negatively.

Have faith in yourself and feel with my participation we shall surely succeed.

Jai Hind.

Its appreciative that some start after at least 42 years have started by Mr Anna Hazare.A good initiative to bring to fore for the present youth to follow into the path of corruption-less society. yet the society is filled with corrupt cobwebs with corrupt spiders in it .Hence to cleanse the whole system it will take a lot of time .India being a large country it will take more time so long as the corrupt society does not take a lead and break the movement over a period of time. Hope to get more honest people into the stream of good governance to ensure the corruption is moved out. Yet so long as there is a difference and disparity in the society the corruption can seep into this situations. More educational setup and improving the general education of the masses would be another strong tool to limit corruption. Lets all hope so for the betterment.

I think YES.

The problem in India is not corruption , as the common man understands it ; it is corruption as the rich and powerful understand it.

For the common man , a bribe is a way for the authorities to forgive his petty transgressions , or for his small needs to be met by the people in command.

For the rich and the powerful , corruption is a way of showing that they are above the law ; which is why we have scams running into hundreds / thousands of crores.

Bribes have been there with us ever since Independence ; scams on the scale of the CWG scam or the 2G / 3G scam have increased only in the last 20 years or so. These are the horrors that need to be eliminated.

Hopefully , the Jan Lokpal bill will do this.

It is not that people accepting bribes are not caught today ; unfortunately , as with all aspects of crime , it is the small timers who are caught and punished ; the big fish often go scot-free.

The village headmaster , the junior engineer of the state electricity board , the clerk in the ration office , these people are caught while accepting bribes ranging from Rs. 500 to Rs. 15,000.

But when corruption happens on a grand scale , nothing is done !

Will the Jan Lokpal bill help in rooting out this ? Let us wait and see.

With Lokpal bill, corruption as a means to facilitation is what we are hitting at. The answer is yes. We cannot go no labeling people corrupt/not corrupt. Instead, the system should not fool you. If the system is made accountable, we don't have to go after the corrupt. Corrupt will stand out by itself which thus solves our problem. Think of a Raja or Kalmadi being made to resign just because Lokpal finds him under a needle of suspension. Prime minister, CBI or Court will not have to answer anybody but do the job. Raja/Kalmadi will have to prove themselves not guilty and they cannot go around influencing people.

More than whether it would stop corruption or not, I am more concerned about the success of the movement. Because the success of this movement by Mr. Hazare would signify the first success for the mass (people or AAM ADMI) against politicians after independence.

After receiving countless number of hits over the last few decades, the Aam Admi would be drawing "First Blood" from the political and bureaucratic class. This first hit back will make the ruling and governing class "Shit Bricks".

More such movements would (and have to) follow this movement and eventually the whole system would be cleaned up so that the country has good and clean governance.

So be more happy if this movement by Hazare is able to bring down the government to its knees. This is more than enough for now and let us not worry about the efficacy of the "lokpal" bill to curb corruption.

I think Janlokpal bill can uproot the corruption in India if the bill is passed by taking into discussion few social civilians who have been fighting since long for this bill to be passed. If an independent identity is made who has the power of taking harsh decisions against any corrupt official or govt servant without any interference of govt. No doubt corruption is deep into everyone, as no work is completed at any level without corruption. But the fear of unexpected punishment by an independent court who works under no pressure of anyone would decrease the corruption slowly and gradually and for that we need to set some examples by keeping on trial some highly corrupted officials who are still free on streets.

Corruption is a major current problem. We should be alive and active to eliminate it. The thoughts that it is age-old and that it could never be eliminated, are all weak and negative ones. Now JanLokPal is several steps above what we actually have now. That is why politicians are playing tricks and dodging it for the last 42 years. Let us get it now. If insufficient, we shall fight for a better one. THAT IS LIFE.

Its a start. The war has began. one and all has to support the unit whjch headed by Anna till a case filed-argued-the corrupted wealth seized by Janlokpal. GAndhi won the battle because of his supporters all over the India.First the intellectuals followed Him.Then, poets, then rajahs, then the people he met in small hamlets. They have no arguments. They believed the Gandhi is right.like that all of us who can demonstrate the things have to do to the utmost far end people who are suffering because of this corruptions.THEY NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THEY ARE CHEATED BY THEIR GODS.AND THEY DONT ACCEPT THE CORRUPTION IS KILLING THEIR HEIRS.

I dont think so that lokpal bill will uproot corruption. If the bills can get rid of u from the corruption. If the bill can get rid of the corruption then there are so many bills and acts which should have saved you from this virous. The example is the mediation centre especially marriage related where the mediator itelf is a corrupt and take money from both parties. This will happen with Lokpal also. If you are serious enough to evade corruption, the best way is to ensure awareness and disaude public to pay bribe. It is only the public who bribes the officer for favour out of the way. .K.Virmani

It might not be enough to uproot the corruption. But it will be a good starting point for the process. People will be more aware of their rights and the recourses they have in case they are asked for bribes. And people taking bribes will be a trifle (very little) scared.

Certainly anything that is deep rooted in our system cannot be rooted out completely in a fortnight but atleast such movement can aid to mitigate the level of corruption to an extent. Let us take it step by step and see where it goes from there. No point in breaking your head and concluding on the bill's effectiveness. Every bill passed in the Lok Sabha has had its effect on the system - some positive while others negative.

So, let the game begin captained by Anna Hazare.

If you are asking "Can Janlokpal Bill alone will uproot the corruption?" - a big no! This is the end of an anarchy under the guise of democracy! There will be hiccups at every stage, till the bill will finally get passed in the Parliament. This is the Victory for Democracy. Once this bill is in place, a care-free corrupt Indian will think twice before he seeks money from citizens. Uprooting of corruption will happen only when the named corrupt people from all walks of life pending in various courts of the country are sentenced imprisonment without any favour or nepotism! To cleanse the system we need to look at various Acts (like People Representation act, 1951), bringing in various reforms, including judicial reforms with judicial accountability! We need to go a long way! For now, we have a great victory for people, as they have participation in legislation of a law in the participative democracy!

Making a bill for fighting corruption is useless......every law/rule in India has loop holes, how do u gaurantee that the participants of the committee or body will be non-corrupt ,non-bias,etc......if they themselves will be corrupt what is the use of this bill, simple example...whay was anticorruption department established...it was assumed that anti corruption officers will bring a break to this worm growth...it happened the other way.....anti corruption officers are most corrupts (always exceptions are there),they inform the corrupt officers that ther eis trap against the officer ..and save him/her for bribe....we indians have to come out of this through a total change in mind set , our fast life is making us corrupt...think on this statement as this fast life is responsible for many things....clearances,NOC's,CC's,we want everythign immediately or asap.this bill will not help us for sure.!

Hey,

When Ms Sonam Kapoor, sent the "open letter" here, I conveyed my apprehension on this.

Lokpal bill, is something like an Ombudsman services. These services are, well established, in Security, Banking, Insurance, Auditing, University services, Corporate bodies. World over, almost, more than 45 countries adopt this system. But, they are not given the judicial rights whereas, given Independence & rights to solve complaints amicably within the frame work. Nature of complaints may be , as I said above.

Ombudsman for the Govt, is appointed by the Govt. This service, along with amicably solving citizen complaints within /out-side state, ensure smooth running of govt, in its policy & implementation.

In India, so many Corporate bodies are hiring / owning this service , to sort out the disputes nationally / internationally.

The Lokpal Bill, is the one which look for a similar set-up for the Govt. It is nothing new. It is already there in many countries. Even, many states, I think, around 15 , in India, including Maharashtra, is having the Lokayukta Bill passed & in vogue. Have you seen any reduction in Corruption.?

Lokpal bill paves a way for a Third party vigilence as we have Central Vigilance committee. Thats all. Its efficiency , activities & performance are , not yet proved, by any of the countries. But, considered as a helping hand, for the Govt in solving day to day complaints for which govt is unable to spare a time.

So what I feel is that, there is no problem in establishing an Ombudsman services for the Govt. But, it is run by our own people only who are immersed in this mundane affairs. Results are again doubtful.

No it cant, corruption is something which is very deep inside everyone of us we say the government is corrupt but we would do the same thing if we are made accountable, barring a few most of us are corrupt what a politician does when he wants to win an election he gives bribe to us (citizens) by spending money on alcohol, food sometimes also cash on people so that they will cast there vote to them. Its a very commendable effort taken up by Anna Hazare but sorry it wont serve the purpose, corruption can only be erased by educating the masses.

It is looking at the Lokpal Bill is a big political game. Every thing including all the scams uprooted the administration and economy of India. What they have been doing when the Scams took upper hand. Entire Constitution should be reformed first of all Only Clean chit persons should be elected, with out any charge sheets. Second, They must be utmost transparent in tax payments. Third, Evaluation of any contract should be put for open discussion. Fourth, Good Evaluator presence is must for putting for auction of any service to the private companies. Investigation Department must be very experienced to detect the loop holes. There are so many things to be assorted for a clean Administration. Overall, the Voters Mindset should be changed, what for they are going to vote a leader?

Ofcourse. Its just a bill. Execution again in the hands of executive body. The body shall be headed by thorough honest personalities. Choosing the head for heading the bodies is also important. We have a person on whom there are allegations of corruption is heading Chief Vigilance Commission. The Govt. is unable to take stringent action. The arrogant officer is still sticking to the post.

No amount of legislation can uproot corruption because it is deep rooted in our society. The root cause is our election system. Most of the electorate who vote our illiterate because the educated either are indifferent or even those who wish to vote cannot do so. For example most of the people in transferrable jobs are unable to vote.

Our entire system is so rotten that anybody who moves from one place to another has to grease palms for every need which is required for day to day survival. A few examples:

  1. You move to a new town and you want your driving license to be renewed it is not possible unless you pay bribe.
  2. You want to buy a property the seller will not accept white money because the stamp duty is high.
  3. You want to sell property nobody will give you white money.
  4. You want to get your property registered; you have to pay SUVIDHA SHULK.
  5. You want a water or electricity connection, you cannot get it without paying bribe.
  6. You buy a new vehicle and want to get it registered you have to take the help of touts.
  7. If you want ration card, you again have to pay to the officials.
  8.  You want an alteration or renovation in your house you cannot get a map approved without first paying the Municipal Corporation officials.
  9. You are an honest Income Tax payer; you cannot get refund without shelling out some money.
  10. You need a street light installed in your lane, you pay the electricity department.

Our Prime Minister knows that a number of his ministers are corrupt but he does not have the guts to show them the door because of coalition dharma.

HOW THE LOKPAL BILL WILL HELP? The need is first to bring changes in the system which affect the AAM ADAMI where he does not have to pay a bribe to get his work done for day to day survival, the corruption will automatically vanish.

Absolutely! Sulagna, I have always been saying that Each of us is independent and cannot be 'forced' into doing something against his own will.

Therefore the resistance to corruption can only come from within ourselves.

We have been so used to transfering our own responsibilities and weaknessess on to other people or 'circumstances' that we have started believing ourselves immune from the consequences of our own actions.
