There is no fair reason why the region should be given any special status ? Whatever the historical circumstances were, at one point of time in history, the leader of Kashmir chose to align with India. Now, J&K is like any other Indian state. It is not the political aspirations of hoi polloi which has kept the land singeing for sometime now but just the selfish motive of a handful of separatists cashing on the dissatisfaction of people caused out of lack of sincerity of the Govt. - both state as well as central, towards their growth. And certainly the role of our western neighbour, in the whole sordid episode cannot be ruled out. As a mark to show that their eyes have opened, the least that the politicians can do is to face the general public of the land, listen to their grievances and put forward some honest solutions. The prolonged interference of military in the normal life of general mass must be a disturbing element for the people there. Instead of quelling the protest through force and further alineating the public, the situation should be tackled through active dialogue. Afterall, rest of the country cannot live in peace, if our Kashmiri brethren continue to weep, overtly or covertly. In short, instead of planning on the lines of giving autonomy or any special status, the govt. should address the problems of the common mass -infrastructure, employment, opportunity to grow etc.
