Professor Rodney Barker of the London School of Economics, one of Britain’s leading experts on government, ponders Mamata Banerjee’s pledge to “turn Calcutta into a London” — “Kolkata ke London kare tulbo”. Calcutta Metro has 18 trains, serves 21 stations, is 23 km long and carries 350,000 on a weekday and employs 3,500 people. Services operate from 7am to 10pm and begin on Sundays at 2pm. ● London Underground has over 500 trains, serves 270 stations, is 402km long and carries 3.5m passengers on weekdays. Service begins at 5.15am and the last leaves at 00.20am (23.30 on Sundays). ●In total, Transport for London (TfL), which also looks after buses, employs 28,000 people. There are 6.4 million bus journeys each weekday, 2.2 billion last year, 700 bus routes, 8,500 buses. Night buses run on most main routes Calcutta’s population is put at 51,38,208, increasing to 10m during the day. London had an official population of 75,56,900 in July 2007 within the boundaries of Greater London, while the Greater London Urban Area had a population of 82,78,251 and the metropolitan area an estimated total population between 12 million and 14 million. ●The population density of Calcutta is put at 27,462 per sq km, compared with 4,761 per sq km for Greater London. ●Calcutta had 3,21,800 cars in 2007, while the number in London is over 3m http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100530/jsp/calcutta/story_12500804.jsp

With the majority collections and assesment for future the sake of confidence increases for misguiding the people. People in communist politics ruined many of the big industries set up of britisher but Calcutta is still enjoying the royalty of British given infrastructure. How is it possible, Now ? Why not try with railways first to make equivalent ?

I don't think a city like london will satisfy the needs of people in calcutta. I believe in its present state, calcutta is atleast affordable to the people.

Let her first clear all slums totally & improve the standard of living of each individuals as a Londener lives. Mere statistics & metro is not London. It is an open acceptance that Mamta considered Calcutta guys as fools by saying like this.

Thanks for the referral Jyoti

When ever we know that we cant do something we tend to give examples of other things, just like a few years back there was Mumbai –Shanghai and now Calcutta-London. Why cant we/our leaders do something that will make our City /Country such that others should say- WE WILL MAKE OUR COUNTRY LIKE INDIA.

Making Calcutta "london"....are again going back for east india company culture?? Why london? Why not we improve on basic amenties for people & make their life easy with transparency in governance? I dont like calcutta to be "london" with indiam mentality! I rather prefer Calcutta to be a Calcutta that attracts people of london many years back but this time with a image of "independant"

Jyoti Mamta is a day dreamer. If she want to Kolkata to be London a lot of changes needs to be done. The very first one shifting approximately 50 million people from Kolkata which I am not only sure but confident is not possible.

So let her have all those unreakistic day dreams and during dreams one should not disturb so lets not disturb her and watch with interest.

First of all we can't make comparison between two cities.  Calcutta Vs London ? Everything is different. Culture, traditions, thoughts, area, economy and even environment. Can we make comparison with only infrastructure? I don't have actual idea about the figures but Jyoti i am agree with you that it might be political stunt to attract voters. If per capital income of Calcutta 'll improve in near future only then we can say that old famous city of India become "Indian London"

In Kolkata, people really do not vouch on Mamata's claim/s : Kolkata will be London, North (of) Bengal : Switzerland and Digha as GOA !

But, she claims, that is their pride. Nobody aspired like these before.

When people are mesmarised like this ( read : befooled ) one can do the best or the worst with his/ her voters.

Here, in my thoughts, the leader is not on the wrong side, but people or the voters (some body told, people may not be wrong ? ). They "only" want change, dont kno what/ how/ why.

.................................

She, so far, has had so many "NO"s : ( Look : all these brought her more and more support and votes ...  .. ! )

-- Tata Nano project on Singur

-- Chemical Hub at Nayachar ( an isolated island on river-bank)

-- the 2nd Metro for Kolkata - making all possible obastacles

-- No electrical posts to carry electricity to New Town/ Rajarhat, a planned Hightech city (an ugly show of strength for small pieces of land already purchased for these purpose )

-- no expansion of High-ways, national or state ( some land is required )

-- She and (her) Central (petty-State-Ministers) do not attend any meeting with Local Govt.

... to be continued
