Today in the corporate ladder success is defined by better car, bigger house, lavish lifestyle, etc. A bigger car or a better model, these days, is seen as signs of success and invites envy. At the workplace, visual signs of success often drive jealousy. A bigger house, a larger car, more extravagant display of money as compared to your boss is a sure shot means of inviting your bosses’ wrath.

So, can one buy a better car or house than his boss??

I don't thing this a very serious issue. If you are a star performer & are better than your boss you have the right to buy anything that you feel like. Moreover buying something is in your rights & buying just to please your boss is just like licking his feet.

So, in my opinion you have the right to go ahead.

Darshana I don't agree completely on this. See if you are at a junior level you need to play safe. “I have seen it happen to me in real life, “The day I bought my BMW, my relationship with my boss took a nose-dive. And the only reason for this is that when people see you driving a BMW and your boss driving an Accord, they perceive you as more successful than your boss.

And that sets off pangs of jealousy, which are difficult to manage. Sometimes they become so deep-rooted that whatever good you do seems to be pale in comparison.”

So, better play safe than putting your neck on the railway track.

Yes, of course. Who said that you can not buy a better house or a car than your boss. There is absolutely NO CONNECTION in between these two things. So, one should proceed without any hesitation.

WHY NOT? And I don't find any reason for seniors to feel jealous about the same. It is not necessary that the better or an expensive model of car is can be purchased only according to the position held in the company. May be that one was employed in previous company and his tenure over there he might be holding a car which is higher value than the car being held by the manager in the present company.

Also, if the spouse or other family members of the person are employed, he can very much afford to buy car of his choice, may be is ‘Endeavour’, ‘Safari’, ‘Corolla’, ‘Honda Accord’ or even a ‘Mercedes’. If a manager is of a mentality to invest his earnings in stock or elsewhere, how and why a junior employee should resist himself buying a better car than his manager has.

In some cases I have seen that the Managing Director of the company himself drives a Swift, whereas the General Manager commutes in chauffeur driven car. Not to talk high, I’ve seen the miser managers on a Priya scooter while the peon moves on a Bajaj Pulsar. In such circumstances it would be most unjustified to discuss that why a junior employee should not buy a car which is better that his manager.

Depends on the backgrounds of the families associated with both of them. We all have seen in our colleges where many students arrive in expensive cars while the profs are asking for the lift bcoz they might had sent their bikes for servicing.

The first sign of an incompetent manager is when he/she tries to compete with his/her subordinates. So if having a bigger house/car is affecting your work your manager has some "Chemical Locha" ..

You need not be BOSS to buy a better Car / a big House. You, only need to be potential enough to buy & possess it for yourself. We have full freedom to do things as we like within the frame-work of functioning either at home / work-place. No matter what my BOSS is using.Do not you see a film star driving a better car than the Director / Financier / Producer.

yes any body can buy better car/house depending his priority. The same level of priority may not be of his boss. But in any sector live in a limited profile is best way to live life.

ofcourse, why not.Given a chance to prove ones mettle, there are ample examples to support the argument. A better car/house depends on the performance and incentive payout hence making it equivalent to efforts made. Its however expected to keep a low profile and not show off to boss! :-)

Many people own vehicles/house that they did not buy with the salary they earn. So to compare the vehicle/house you own with that of your boss if yours is better has no relevance to your working environment. Your fanancial ability and your boss is not the same. In many organisations the boss/manager don't even own a vehicle since their working condition entitled them to use company vehicles. Some also live in company houses/government flatsand owns nothing.

I am not sure if my boss owns a vehicle since he use project vehicle with assigned driver. The vehicle I drive was bought with our business funds and not the salary I receive. My house was built with our business funds as well and is larger with more modern convenience than my boss. There are also many junior staff who drive big vehicles and own large houses, so what does this has to do with the boss or their supervisor.?

PLEASE NOTE MY RESPONSE IS IN RELATION TO MY COUNTRY AND NOT WHAT GOES ON IN INDIA.

THANK YOU.

Yes. one can buy a better car than his boss. But should not show off to avoid his wrath or complex.one cannot afford the wrath of the boss. one cannot show that he is richer, wiser, better, higher in contacts , character and personality than the boss. so far one is boss and he is a subordinate, he should follow the life style of pandavas during the life in exile.   your property , your cash balance, your car, your mobile , your contacts should not become an eye soar to your colleaques or your boss.Having is different from showing off.Take your wife in a beautifull car But walk a mile for your boss.

Hey Darshana, there is no harm in having bigger car/house.

This is not a compulsion that one can buy his lavish life only from his salary. May be he is having enough money to maintain his status and he likes that.

There is also another reason of living lavish life, Some peoples do not like to spend money in big cars if they are already having a small one, they think this is wastage of money or they want to save money for their better future or they are haivng other responsiblities for which they havy to pay from their salary.

The car/house should be according to our choice, It doesn't matter that our seniors are having smaller car or our juniors are having bigger car.

If you can afford lavish life so live lavishly, and let others think.....

I would say yes for this, but need to be careful, and should play safe. Even i have one live example. Since the day i started to own Blackberry phone which my manager do not have, he started jealous of me. the way i increased the pace of responding to my customers and the positive feedback i am getting for being so quick in acknowledging mails and delivering work, made him to spend sleepless nights, and his jealous become serious, and started to demotivate me and was trying to make fun of me in front of others and sometimes he was trying to pull my leg as well. we can buy whatever we want, and should not keep our managers as obstacles, or limitations in reaching our destiny, after all we need to live our life. by the way, most of the managers, will not bear their team members override them in any way, until they are not aware of it or its out of their reach. only thing is, in front of him we need to maintain a low-profile. that's all. Live for yourself and your family, but not for so called managers.

I agree with Darshana, I don't find anything wrong in having better car than your boss as long as they are parked at company parking are, be it BMW or Accord.

You have to play safe always with your boss. You have to keep your boss above you atleast in office. You don't have to flaunt your status better than your boss in office.

Darshana, you are confusing financial status with performance!  Please note that financial status depends largely upon the background a person comes from and not upon their performance at work.

Please do not confuse the two.

Jyoti I agree with you that we need to play safe when it comes to showing off money, House, Car to your manager. Your manager would be envy of you and would see in your performance appraisal because he/she would not like his subordinate driviang a BMW, Mercedes or a car which is better than his/her's.

Guys play safe.. even if you are well to do than your Boss please dont show off to your boss otherwise you will be in trouble....

Cheers :) Nipoon Tandon
