Competition exists everywhere, which sometimes in-turn leads to rivalry. Rivalry amongst employees is a common thing as each of them is jealous of the other for some reason. Just think a bit you will be able to relate yourself......

In my opinion sometimes rivalry can give a way to innovation. Employees compete against each other & come up with new & exciting ideas. Thus, rivalry can ensure the company new & innoative ways of doing business.

But care should be take so that it doesn't take ugly turns....

NEVER! Rivalry between the employees of an organization can never boost innovation. It is a jealousy that leads to retardation of productivity and positive ideas of a productive employee when his/her rival starts wrong and negative feedback about his/her colleague to the bosses resulting in to wrong impressions as he/she is normally deemed to be be trying to demonstrate himself/herself super intelligent as compared to his/her superiors. So, Rivalry between the employees of the same organization is quite dangerous.

Rivalry between the organizations however can boost innovation for the sake of competitive survival of an organization.

Rivalry definitely catalyses innovation provided it is maintained with limits that are either ethical or managerial. Rabid rivalry can become dangerous when it gets out of hand. The word competition is more apt as rivalry tends to signify personal overtones

Definitely, take an example of BAJAJ. People used to wait for 2-3 months to get scooters, that to same design and model ran years and years. NO INNOVATION AT ALL THAT POINT IN TIME. After 1991, Hero Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha came in India with new designs and focused on delivery and service. After that Bajaj came up with new bikes. Same goes in all sectors.

Rivalry, if taken in the positive note, will certainly boost innovation! If taken in a negative sense, will ruin the prospects of the company!

Rivalry need to be controlled by the company. It should not be given a free ride. It can be in the form of say, " inviting new ideas / improvements in  program ". Corporate policy needs to channelize their vision & pave a way for competition / rivalry so that, a potential healthy environment is created.

The answer is yes and no. It depends on the passion one has in the content. But more people would like to fight it out to get better and some may quit.

i agree that rivalry leads to innovation because you are alays trying to be better that the other and hence to be so you have to come up with something different which your rival doesnt have so this leads to innovation

Yes some extent but it entirely depends how much rivalry open and in healthy manner i can give you one solid example at country level in positive sense China & India. in negative rivalry sometimes crushes because it gives the way of manipulation the ideal example where the innovation took place is the biotechnology & energy . but i will tell you saturation of any process gives the passage for innovation and barriers from external sources

Revalry contributes towards an immidiate need to sustain. One way to resolve the sustainability issue is through INNOVATION. For instance, in a highly competitive pharma market the approach is always to find a new molecule and get it patented.

Rivalry is one form of psychological expression of human subconscious mind and according to Freudian's principle there are id, ego and superego.Rivalry if it is utilised in a beneficial way can lead to innovative ideas because human mind is a battlefield, always making complex web of thoughts and creations and in order to satisfy their ego they tend to innovate something unique out of rivalry and in order to take over their competitors,  and prove themselves superior and satisfy their self esteem, but if it is not healthy then it may lead to some ways which may mar other's activities and prove harmful. So competition is nurtured till that moment untill it remains healthy but when it becomes unhealthy rivalry then it become a risk.

Rivalry is a negative emotion, one is consumed with negative feelings so how does one innovate. The mind is blocked so thought process is clouded. Ideas do not flow thick and fast. Innovation comes from team spirit and bonhomie.

I speak from an IT product organization and i have to agree rivalry does boost innovation and the initiative taking attitude. As long at the organizational culture is open and recognizes performance.

The moment the culture of the organization turns secretive and biased, rivalry usually leads to the a lot of discomfort to other members of the team who amongst themselves may not be rivals.

Rivalry, if promoted within the company and the employees get credited for their ideas (wether or not they are used), can certainly be a good thing. In the long run, working as a team has greater benefits. Rivalry can (if not controlled) break up a team very easily, leaving you with ideas but no team to carry them.

Dear Capt Kartik,

The question does not relate to rivalry between enterprises or companies. The present question relates to rivalry between employees of an organization.

So, rivalry between employees doesn't become the cause of innovation, RATHER it creates back-biting about rivals leading to confusion and wrong impression in the management about certain section of employees leading further to loss of productivity, as the rival groups always get more and more involved in giving setbacks to the opposite groups ignoring productivity of the organization.

That’s kind of a yes & a no. You have to be careful about situations like this. Rivalry can lead to jealously, then that can lead to serious problems. The rivalry that goes on needs to be investigated & eliminated. It’s better to look at it as competition.

Rivalry can stifle creativity. There needs to needs to be a cohesive work environment and people need to agree to disagree then move on. Rivalry is one thing but competition is another. Sometimes competition or rivalry in the work environment can be a detriment to the team. Then on the other hand it can be healthy for the company. It can be good sometimes to strive to be the best but not at the risk of alienating coworkers and/ or team mates.

Only healthy completion might be ok. Sometime rivalry or competition can be good but you have to really be careful because there is a fine line between rivalry and hatred. Only sometimes it can be good but it shouldn’t go overboard.

The rivalry or competition that takes place between coworkers needs to be taken on a case by case basis. Each incident needs to be looked at individually then decisions need to be made. Company leaders need to watch out for things like this and take action when needed.

Rivalry within the organisation is a negative sign for management, rivalry with the competitors is also a bad sign. rivalry can be in a broader sense when it is against the odds & hindrances of the business & services.

To get innovation done really, the corporates need to hire passionate people and they will take care of rest.

Rivalry can bestow fruitful results for any organisation only for a short span but it transpire as a failure when stretched.

Creating competition within organization undermines the weaker teams. The collaborative approach, 'let's find the best solution together', produces better results. I have found competition breaks morale in creative people while collaboration builds part ownership.

Rivalry an never boost innovation that will contibute to the organization's growth. Rivalry contributes to the innovation of schemes and ideas which drag the other person down. All of the above is because, rivalry is a negative forceworking within the system breaking the system. For innovation we need competition and not rivalry

If your mind remains busy with conquering rivalry, then where is the space left in your mind for creative, challenging & innovative thoughts & ideas. so definately rivalry is not the tool for becoming innovative.

No. Innovation can only come from  necessity. Rivalry can induce necessity only if it was taken positively. Innovation has taken place only in positive environment. Rivalry should be therefore be discouraged if you seek positive growth. Further, innovation require a lot of team work as well. Rivalry and team work may not co-exists.

Rivalry among companies can be a motivator to innovate because it caters to an instinct to survive and sustain business in all circumstances, but rivalry among employees can be destructive because here self interests override the corporate goals.

Envy can lead to derailment of the corporate mission. Rivalry among companies can bring employees together to collaborate tuned to the corporate  mission and be constructive under stewardship of a good leader  whereas rivalry among employees can destroy creative instincts and tear of the organization growth strategic initiatives.
