it's a yes and a no, if as you say it refreshes the mind, the same it clouds the mind also, depends on how an individual is brought up and whether he accepts it as refreshment or clouding of the mind

While auditing the accounts of a shipping company (1977) I found a mistake of 10 paise. My senior commented "Great! 10 paisa mistake for a Rs.1000 Cr turnover company" sarcastically. I have learnt my lesson and we became friends.

Negative sarcasm will create positivity.Provoking sarcasm will create hatred. Sarcasm in lighter veins create relationship building.serious sarcasm to put some one down will create negativity.

Sarcastic comments need to be actively made sense of, as they stand at odds with the true situation, such as giving high praise to mediocrity. Parsing such paradoxes by looking at them in different ways might kick us into a mental gear ready for complex thinking. Bearing the brunt of someone's anger can focus the mind wonderfully. This can help us to knuckle down on well-defined tasks, but can hinder activities that depend on open, lateral thinking. (Source: Journal of Applied Psychology).

Thanks,Gargi for referral. In Indian context,it may not lead to creativity. As the saying goes "Man's sense of humor seems to be in inverse proportion to the gravity of his profession" (Mary Roberts Rinehart). I posted favouring your argument of sarcasm to lead 'CREAVITY' .

It is more of a personal affront, so how can it lead to creativity. In fact it snuffs out the creativity if delivered in front of your subordinates and peers !

The word "sarcasm" reeks of negativity. As the Oxford Dictionary defines sarcasm, "it is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt", both word that carry negativity. It is used normally to show who's boss rather than trying to convey any kind of message that could lead to creativity. I do not, however, understand Mr Mariagnanam who speaks of "negative sarcasm". How can there be something like :negative sarcasm' and that too leading to positivity. This is akin to saying that minus and minus equals plus... Sarcasm itself has a negative connotation.

If sarcasm is replaced with CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM... the ball game would be totally different. Its really a matter of putting the words in the context that the target person understands the meaning without misinterpreting the references!! Am I being constructively critical of this discussion? Yes. I would have liked someone here to mention this term called CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM!! And Gargi you would have meaningful debates if the words used are correct! Pardon me for being so honest, but thats how this term works! :)

Sarcasm creates a negative impression on the receiving party towards the giving party. Few of the receivers ever try to rewind and understand the real motive of the giver (if in positive context). Therefore below the superficial behavior (for job/ relationship sake) the underlying negative feeling remains and may surface whenever an opportunity comes by. It is better to be straightforward or remain silent.

A little bit of everything is good. But those who advocate sarcasm as a continuous positive are either sadistic, masochistic or both!!! Constant srcasm is debilitating, frustrating and exhaustingly defeating. The only creative outlet would be a sanatorium!! Cheerful encouragement is the best antidote.

I dont think it creates creativity. The definition of sarcasm "it is a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual". How this can stimulate creativity? I doubt. Instead it may down the personality on the otherside.

Sarcasm means to launch a scathing or a cutting attack on a person for a remark or quote made by the person! It is meant to cut the person and downgrade the attempt. Now, the difference lies in the temperament of the people involved during this time frame. The effect of such a launch will only be determined by this mindset that they carry. It cannot be defined as leading to creativity!
