Today its all about creating customer loyalty through different mediums, and marketers are leaving no stone unturned to achieve this as they know if their customers are loyal then they can maintain their sales and also through WOM they can even get new customers, So to foster such relationships with consumers and to create sales and generate more lead marketers are heading towards social media for this cause. Can Social media foster business relationships and create sales through lead generation??

May be not completely as still connectivity is a concern in a country like India for people to have access to social media, but its ever increasing and the way people spend time online has made marketers realise the importance of social media, and are targetting this new platform for various purposes. And brands are creating communities in these social platforms, as they know that people are connected and if people recommend something which is coming from their friend or their relatives then obviously people will try it out and if the product is really good, the Word of mouth is very fast and one can expect better sales...

Social Media requires time and energy. It is not an overnite success scheme.Having said this ofcourse over a period of time it does develop into positive opportunities. The rule of the thumb is if your customer / client / target audience is on the Social Media sites and if they have a positive attitude towards it then yes your being on the Social Media sites can help you.

these days social media is the best option where you can meet thousands of ppl and tell them about your product by just one click. people spend more time on visiting these sites. and y not??? it makes possible catchin up with long lost friends, helps even talk face-to-face to relatives, play games, entertainment, jobs and so many things. so what better platform to market your product. we even have a new marketing field developin, SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING which i am sure will catch up soon with people along with rise in importance of social medias.

Social media should not be used to promote products which would pose danger to the human heath, say, beverages of all sort, harmful drugs, artificial cosmetics, etc. Social media should be used to support growth and development of our rural mass,bring them at par with their counter-parts in township. Do anything and everything to bridge the rural-urban divide, educate every citizen of this country, do everything to keep every citizen healthy and provide shelter to every sufferer!

Meena, while I totally support the argument, I still have a little clarification to do. Try not to look at the criticality of social media in this country alone. Instead, look at what social media is doing globally.

Take for example, Gap's change of their logo that was condemned by consumers in America and the rest of the world. An app developer capitalized on the opportunity to develop an app that would let people create mock-ups of the logo that Gap adopted, with whatever message they wanted in there instead of the word 'Gap'. People came up with some innovative logos that might not be appropriate for this forum but that's besides the point that the app went viral and Gap sat up and heard their consumers, eventually deciding to roll back to the former logo. See the power of social media? A thing like this would have been impossible, say 5 years before.

Consumer care, marketing, branding, visibility, even sales have found social media to be the new platform. Dell Outlet (@delloutlet), Dell's refurbished laptops and goods store, announced in 2008 that they had crossed the $1M mark in sales through Twitter. Exhilarating, to say the least!

Social media is here to stay and India will catch up soon, as we have with every single disruptive technology that has ever played a role in shaping up human civilization and culture but like I have always maintained, we'll take our time in getting there.

I feel this could be tried as one of the method of lead generation but I doubt whether more than 10% returns can be achieved out of total expected revenues. I am quite realistic in stating this because lead generation by this method has been quite slow and ineffective in many cases as compared to other ways.

Please do not term me a pessimist, but I,m afraid in the longer run "NO". These systems run out of their utility very fast. There was a time people would welcome calls and mails from credit card marketers, membership marketers, but over a period of time there are more signing up for DND services or unsubscribe links. The point is that however professional a person be,he or she gets over and loses interest on the connectivity aspect and wants to break free. Even most of us on this platform, may find it boring to continue with the debates and discussions. In the short runYes, but as the trend picks up No. Warm regards.
