Some of the doers will evolve as thinkers at some stage of life... Same person but different roles at different time...

I support Santosh's views. All thinkers can be very good doers but it is not necessary that all doers have to be very good thinkers. For example, there are many people in our country who really know the necessity of India today. Who know where our country is lacking behind, what is today's need, how it can be developed with the present resources, how to finish corruption, terrorism etc.., if given a chance, they can emerge as a very good leader and can take country to extreme extents but on the other hand, there are sects of people also who are very good in performing tasks given to them but are always dependant on other's instructions. Who cannot take their own decisions and are are always dependant on other's guidance. Though these people are good in finishing the work they've started, they cannot move a step forward without other's instructions.

All thinkers can be doers but all doers canot be thinkers. The result of the peformance is very importment in both the cases. In our society, we consider the thinkers are more important than doers.I suggest to recognise the performer from both the streams.

Can Thinkers and doers be the same? 10/8/2009 Thinking, for the purpose of this topic, is taken to mean strategic thinking and NOT thinking involved in operations. Eventhough there are clear differences between the two processes - thinking and doing - there are overlaps and iterations. The differences, rather distinguishing features, are: Essentially thinkers conceptualise and doers execute. While the Thinking process is primarily individual (perhaps a small team) effort, the process of Doing involves team-work, co-ordinating people, resources - project management. Thinking process involves vision, creativity, forward thinking, out-of-the-box thinking, being aware of trends in the domain, technology etc whereas Doing involves team-work, systematic thinking, attention to details, timelines adherance to plan. Thinkers have a high failure rate; many of their ideas are still-borns. Example are Resaerchers. Doers can not have failure since all factors have been considered at the planning of the execution including risks and have been mitigated (hopefully). The successful creation of Thinkers is of very high-value while the success of a Doer produces expected value their failure causes serious damage. Because of the stark differences in the processes involved they call for different profiles of people. However, the roles are never this clear in reality.

Hi Gopal, In essence, today does any organization have both thinkers and doers same? The C level executives do the thinking and the rest of the organization does the job or the level of doing progressively increases as we go down the ladder. The point in debate is - should they be same or different? It is not that a thinker can't do or a doer can't think. It is not that a thinker should not be allowed to do or the otherway. No one can execute without thinking thats for sure. But the meaning of thnker here is strategy. So as you said proportions may differ in thinking capabilities and doing capabilities, but that is not the debate here. Given a project to you, would you employ people who are both thinkers and doers for every role or do you employ thinkers for certain particular jobs and doers for some other kinds of roles? Some people just accept or agree to whatever other people say - such people are not thinkers, they could possibly be doers if there is no other third category. In the same way, some people just resist to do anything, such people may be thnkers if there is no other category. Thinkers may take relatively less risk in real life, they are less adventerous etc. But doers have the guts to go and do it - They take risks and they are adventerous. Thinkers are calm and quiet, doers are always restless and they need action. So there is absolutely clear distinction in identifying. Even in the wired world, still the thinkers and doers have to be different. as we progress in technology development, our thinkers also progress to next level.

Though Thinkers are nothing but experienced doers, it is essential for thinkers to focus on thinking rather than wasting time on doing what is thought. It is difficult to segregate both of them precisely without a overlap, but significant portion can be different.
It is not possible for a humanbeing to be good at both thinking and doing, because each individual is good at only one thing - either thinking or doing.
If doers and thinkers are same or the vice versa, we have trouble in completing the projects on time.

What a beautiful question!!!! Thinkers(Read Mangers) have to get work done from the doers. All their stategies will bite the dust if they are not do-able or not done right. So i think thinkers have to put the doers hat and it helps if they have been doers at some level previously. Usually thinkers and doers are different people but it helps if they are the same.

Yes, thinkers and doers are same. Infact two of these activities will not make sense when done parallely on a thing. I repeat , 'on a thing'. Thinking is a phase , where a person has already himself, a question ' What to do'? So a doer definitely gets his support and energy from his thought or from his thinking phase. Call it planning or thinking , as long as it goes for a activity its one and same. And coming to process in industries , some are thinkers and some or doers .... that does not however mean that , the doers dont think. Ya, its not a good idea to only make a person do , without letting them think or explaining the thought behind it... dont ask me what happens if not explained ,but just think what it can bring about in a person. This is exactly a point of dissatisfaction of a employee as he tries to understand the overview (some get it from experience , but some suffer as they dont see the view ) so they wont feel interested or feel stressed out and there by chain of reactions leading to failure. In my opinion projects dont fail because doers wanted to think... Sorry here i dont agree with Mr.Raghu Kastury.

Yes, certainly can be same. Bill Gates has disclosed at once that he used to think alot when he was a student and child. Bill Gates thinking has materialised int he form of writing first software and sending an offer and then finally getting the offer accepted, and he could start microsoft at an early age. I believe that it is sure that even our great Kalam was a great thinker from the beginning and he has achieved many. Steve Jobs was also a great thinker and achieved alot. What I wanted to say is that a person can't do anything unless he think about that. Thinkers can be doers, but, a person who can't think, can't do anything and its my opinion.

I was in KSFC in the early eightees. After I left KSFC, I developed a software to generate project reports, which could also be used as a credit appraisal software. KSFC was reluctant to implement it at the time for they wanted to keep decision making to themselves for obvious reasons. After a while, however, KSFC had to computerize to a great extent. I proposed to the banking head of RBI Bangalore, in the early nineties that I could develop a module where 90% of outstation cheques could be credited to the payee within 48 hours. All I asked for was clearing house membership to my company. I was proposing to use a particular provision in banking law. The RBI official asked me to arrange an aircraft first and then approach him! Till today, our banking system has not been able to implement it. If a cheque has to be encashed at Chamrajnagar from Mysore, it takes 15 days. Even between core banking branches, only self drawn cheques are encashed in other branches. My project can still be given life and the banking law provision is still relevant. In the early nineties, I started a project called Kreedagram where I had highlighted innovative approaches to sports training. Times of India had carried an article on this. Some discussion with SAI with the then Director, Shri AJ Anandan had also taken place. I could not get any cooperation after Shri Anandan retired, from SAI. Only a part of the proposal is now implemented in high-end sports training. Many of the approaches are still relevant and can benefit a large number of sports persons. I have identified a crucial strength of electricity companies which the companies themselves do not know how to exploit! An excellent product can be built out of it. I approached NIIT when they had only Bangalore centre in addition to their HQ at Delhi. They had announced franchise for Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli in Karnataka. Next day I was in Delhi talking to a Keralite franchise manager. He asked me to fill in an application which was in the form of a project report. I listed all computers in Mysore District (this happened in early nineties) and full projections as part of the survey. When I went bank to NIIT to sign franchise, I was told that NIIT would start Mysore themselves and that if I have any other place I should tell them. I returned disappointed. After few months, another Keralite started Mysore NIIT centre as franchise!! I had designed a leisure project (which is still live for implementation) and invited an ex-MD of an Bharti Airtel group company to participate.. He regretted his inability to participate. Few months before, Bangalore Habba, hitherto only a music and dance event, included Swimming, golf, badmintonm snooker and exhibition as part of the event. All these events are part of a unique combination in my project. And Airtel sponsored the event by chipping in 1.5 crores while the government sponsored 2.5 crores. I want to call it simply as coincidence but do not have the heart to! I have discovered a self diagnostic system within the human body, where I can either reverse or delay the effect of ageing on a human body. I am aware that I can not practice without proper license. I have just asked academicians and bureaucrats to register my research as a regular research project. I have told them that I will submit myself to the research grind. I have told them that I would submit a theses which can be evaluated in the normal course. Even before this, I have asked them to constitute a panel of experts to whom I will present my discovery and convince them of the scientific basis. I have not received any reply so far. And I still remain a thinker and not doer!!!
