Coal mining, which provides maximum of our electricity, will not end tomorrow. Every coal miner deserves a right to a sustainable livelihood, we also believe no coal miner should be displaced from his or her job until we develop clean energy alternatives. But coal is not cheap nor clean. It has been killing us for over 200 years. Coal being one of the main source of energy for most of the industries in India, is considered to be the major emitter of greenhouse gases. So is it possible for India to be coal free in future?

Coal is not going to last for infinite time. When coal resources will get depleted, we will get opportunity to live coal-free life. (Because, there will be no alternative). But before such situation, we must be ready with alternate energy source.

According to me coal is still used by the power sector in all electricity generation projects and coal remains the backbone of energy supply in many countries. Even in India almost every industry is run by coal. So coal-fired power will stay for the next 20-25 years. You can't immediately say I won't use coal -- you have to look at the balance of energy security.

Coal is the greatest source of convetional energy and cannot be availed for use if finishes off.Britishers while leaving Indian set fire mines that are still lit and thousands of tonnes of coal is daily being burnt every day. So its the need of the hour to have such a brialliant idea.

I believe that people nowadays are more aware of the climate change than before. They started looking for clean energy like wind, solar, hydro, etc which are more economical than coal. The governement is also coming up with new policies to reduce the usage of coal in industries. So once the policies are implemented I think we will have coal free future.

We can not abandon the coal. Onfollowing other souces and better replacements we can reduce the coal consumption. more utilisation of solar energy, gas, immediately embrassing the methods that can substitute coal consumtion can reduce the utilisation of coal.

Hi Akash, well said. Coal is the only fuel widely used in Indian power sector. So if we want to go coal free we need to change lot of machineries and the process. So that is not a easy job and will take some time. Therefore till coal gets exhausted we will be using it.

I'm working in project management area for power projects,i also assist my seniors in for CDM(clean development mechanism) in compliance to kyoto protocol.....i agree that to your view that the process of using the renewable forms of energy is at snail pace despite various subsidy and tax holidays provided by the indian government,i coal is still the most widely used source and will be for atleast a decade till the other hybrid forms like wind+soalr+fuel cell could be integrated together and the per unit generation and equipment cost are at industries reach.

We can not have the coal free future but we can minimise the use of coal in power sector by using other technologies like PLASMA TECHNOLOGY in which power is generated by any kind of waste and gradually we can creat the coal free future
