Global oil intensity i.e. oil demand growth divided by economic growth -- has fallen by about 2 per cent a year over the last decade and the decline is now accelerating, spurred by high oil prices, moves to alternative fuels and measures to curb global warming.

http://climateprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/no_oil.gif

This does not yet mean that absolute oil consumption is falling because population growth and rising wealth in poorer parts of the world will push up oil consumption for some time. But it does mean global oil use will eventually peak and start declining -- and "oil-less growth" may not be far away.

So, can we have A oil - less economy??

Yes, the future is pretty clear. As the consumption of fossile fuel is increasing it has raised concerns all over the world. Countries have started to look out for altenative sources of energy that can replace oil or reduce its consumption rate.

And we have also come up with some solutions but not put into large scale production yet. So, I think in future we will have a oil - less economy.

Oil is linked with lot of world economy. The rising price is due to appericaition in dollar index. Oil contracts are highly hedge. Switching to alternate source is likely. With big economies of world involved it wont be easy.

I is absolutely possible. India can utilize sun for decetralized powegeneration, aircondition etc. Photovoltaic is not the answere. Stirling engine is the proper solution. AC for domestic and malls can be built with Stirling engines. It is not high tech just plumbing.

Every Invention and discovery is focused at reducing the current cost of all operations and requirements.

over the period we have forgotten that emissions from oil and related products are causing more environmental harm and a permanent damage to bear for our future generations to come.

Our commitment for 'Less - oil' style of living will some day lead to 'oil-less'.

I certainly believe that it is not possible for one to change the world but it is possible for one to enroll others  to begin the change. we can start using all possible options  for 'less - oil' living and also start sharing the same to everyone possible. this will make 1 + 1 = 11

Yes this is good for economy as well as good for the nature also. By taking some measure like giving bost to another inventions in the field of solar energy as well as on electric energy. by lifting the taxes on the non oil used items so that they are available cheap and in the reach of every man. By giving aids to the projects and inventions.

Alternatives exist apart from oil, its the practice that has come to this extent, awareness and mass implementation will benefit and make the situation better , all these are only from the last 100 years.

Thanks for the referral Rajyalakshmi

I think this is an interesting topic to think on, Oil is a necessity, but we should think that even before we understood the importance of fossil fuel the world was going on, one fine day we understood what the importance of fossil fuel is and started to use it.

The question is will we find some thing which can replace fossil fuel?

We are already using solar energy, air and water in different fields to give energy.

Debates such as the present one can give rise to more ideas, some of which might work out and be used.

I thus think that if time arises we might shift from oil to some other commodity.

No ways because the whole present infrastructure is using oil some where or the other .So according to me if there is a new innovation which can overcome the need of oil .We cannot have a oil less economy.

Back in industrial age Production of Oil played a very crucial role, as the entire manufacturing and transportation industry use to rely on OIL Produced Products heavily, even though the times have changed from the industrial age to the dot.com age, all large and small economies still majorly rely on the OIL LINKED PRODUCTS, however incredible amount of research and technology is being involved and developed in well developed countries to bring about an alternative, but still it has a very long way to go...and as Mr C Patil has righlty said " Oil contracts are highly hedge. Switching to alternate source is likely. With big economies of world involved it wont be easy"

We can have oil less economy, since all products directly or indirectly linked with oil and a small rise in oil leads to costlier life style. Alternative methods will bring down this rising cost and will give new innovative ideas which will definitely bring a change in all fields and help us to live in a much advanced oil free healthy economy.

Oil is a very integral part of our daily processes!

Can you imagine food being cooked in anything other than OIL?? :))

Can you imagine engines (automobiles, Ships and airplanes) not using oil in them for smoother functioning?? Oil has some amazing natural qualities and one of it is being high in density it is combustible at very high temperatures!! Will your A/c's work without the OIL being used in the compressor???

This is interesting indeed and I am wondering if I am a complete fool by commenting so simplistically amongst all the other professionals here?? Thanks for the referral Mr. Arikrishnan!

In any case no country can have Oil less Economy..... The reason being...

1. Oil is an essential comodity for not only getting Power but also has wider application in Process Indutries for Lubrication, Waxes, Chemicals in Distillation Process, Sulphuric Acid and its other compounds, paraffin waxes which not only has application in Chemical Inds but also in Health cares, Pharmaceuticals etc Process application for derivation of a Organic and Hydrocarbon Products and all etc... these applications can not be shifted to any other alternate fuel like coal and all... So, Broadly I feel ANY COUNTRIES CAN NOT BE OIL FREE ECONOMY .....

2. Oil is the basic parameter for Import export trade... the Major countries has Oil Imports from OPAC ( cartel of 12 cuntires)and has major contributions to the growth of these exporting countries... If a Economy goes Oil free than these countries will be the one who will be having major Impact on Wold Economy.. and World economy will loose its balance making some conutries richer and some very poor...

Because of dependancy of So many Industriess on Oil and derived products.... the replacement has to be done for Every application Instead of Energy only...

Wat can be done is one can reduce the consumption and dependancy.... but can not go Oil free....

Well Ms.Rajyalaxmi, you have started a very interesting debate.

We can not have oil-less economy. Usage of oil has become necessary to all. It is a necessary evil and we can not part with it. Without oil how we are going to operate the machines and all production equipments. In lieu of oil what kind of substitute we are going to use. We have to go a very long miles to have alternatives and further the existing ones will never help to meet the demands in our country.

India has to depend on other countries to meet her oil requirements. Middle East countries are the oil rich countries, but the prices are being controlled by the US companies. We have to pay for that which results higher prices in our country. Till we achieve self-reliance, we have to sail in the same boat and no other go.

I agree with you . The oil dependance is part of a greater politics by USA. More over these oil producing countries will not try tol loose their superiority on this account . They are already enjoying the luxuries of Oil money.

No way my friend..All these years many countries are trying and trying in making alternate...but it is of no use...

As the population, mobilities are growing,,the oil requirements are going up drastically.

As per the marketing stratery, the oil supplying countries are creating demands and selling it with high price...One more i just wanted to share with, Oil resources are with middle eastern countries but all the rights are with USA based companies.Ultimately, the USA is a brain behind this to streangthern thier economy.

First of all it is very difficult to have a life where there will be no oil. Most of the industries depend on fossil fuels & if there is no adequate alternatives then they will be doomed.

Though the consumption rates have increased we should try find a solution where we can minimize the usage of fossil fuels. But, oil - less economy is pretty hard to imagine..but nothing is impossible.
