A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g. flood, tornado, volcano eruption, earthquake, or landslide) that affects the environment, and leads to financial, environmental and/or human losses. The resulting loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster, and their resilience. This understanding is concentrated in the formulation: "disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability".

In India we would have witnessed many natural disasters & seen what damages had happened to the buildings & the surrounding areas. Majority of buildings that are constructed in India are done without proper analysis & only the commercial buildings that are erected have a very little chance to face a disaster. Ultimately when the time comes for the test all the buildings fall.

So, can we really create structures that can withstand Nature's disaster in India?? Give Comments

Design and behavioral simulations can very well predict the response of structures during different abrupt natural reactions. What needs to be done is to have a coordinated effort of geologists, designers, engineers and researchers to observe  and analyze any particular structure. Definitely it is a cumbersome, time taking and expensive call, but worth taking for the safety against natural disasters.

No, I don't think currently we can see structures that can stand against the the force of nature. In India majority of buildings have the capacity to face heavy storms & light earthquakes. But in terms of earthquakes of higher magnitude most of the buildings collapse.

For India it will take some more years to come up with buildings that can face natural disaster's. Because we don't have the required technology & technical people who can construct buildings of the future.

Yes, there are possibilities to create structures that can withstand nature's force. But in order to build such structures, a lot of effort and research is needed and a lot of work from a geotechnical consultant or geotechnical consultants who can analyze rock and soil and provide suggestions regarding the type of foundation on which the building is constructed and the effect natural disasters will have on them.

Depends on the type of disaster

For earthquakes we have relevant IS codes so we go as per it. IIT roorkee has a seperate department which is mainly dedicated to earthquakes.

Also for floods there is research going on Urban Storm Water management and other surveys which needs to be considered. Structural Design should be performed simultaneously by collecting data also from rain guage stations for each and every particular state in a country. Care should be taken that the roads are constructed so well that it should have adequate facilities for drainage to face the worst floods.

Regarding volcanic eruptions i don have any idea.

Yes, it is possible. The best possible alternative is to take the help of Building Information Model.Simulate the conditions and observe the effects on the model and design the structures. The other alternative is to develop Eco friendly materials, which can withstand the shock of the tremors.

As we don't know the extent and type disaster we can only plan for selected type and limited type to reduce damage.

For natural disasters only we can plan according to history what we have. But nature doesn't haveany  specifcation and limits to which extent it should happen. So no one can.
