I think the fear of payment through the internet and the perception surrounding the Indian mentality of feeling unsafe using the same is overrated.Online booking of airline tickets, railway tickets, books(flipkart) - are probably the best examples to prove how untrue that is. True, there aren't a lot of people using the internet for online payments right now, but the number is only set to grow with the next gen being a lot more internet friendly. The idea of using the internet for payments is slowly coming into vogue. Office goers who find it hard to find time to do their shopping will find online shopping a huge boon. The reduced costs by doing away with the need to maintain a supermarket would greatly help in lowering the costs to consumers further, and with centers around the city keeping stock of goods, the cost of delivering ordered goods to the consumers should be low enough to make the business profitable.

Yes ! Online supermarkets are sure to happen. And it will prove to be a success becuase people today spend lesser time at home or on shopping as they are made to stretch more in the office. But for this to be a real success in india, broadband speeds have to really look up and so should payment modes. Secure transactions will be one big impediment in its growth. But having said that, certain categories in supermarkets will not go online. Categories like vegetables and meat would still be needed to be seen in person before arriving at a buying decision. The other big impediment would be prices. If the price is kept at the same level or lower than what is physically available then it will provide a huge boost to online shopping.

Last year world experienced a financial crises and this year slowly the economy is booming, expecting mile stones. Hopefully online retailing will show its pace in this year.

like Sheetal has mentioned, there will be security issues and misuse of personal information, but this business will still flourish ... The basic fact being that this medium is perceived as a huge supermarket where you can window shop, get bargain deals as this is the medium where mass populace is always online!! its like a huge on ground mela.. its a very interesting debate Shailena :)

Though the internet has changed our lives in more than way that could possibly be thought of still its role in Indian e-commerce is very limited, leaving apart a question of rural India in urban india to which has a population of 250 million, 65 million are PC literate. only 46 million are active users. (source: Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB International). This shows that internet has not been a part of the Indian household still. In india the role of the internet is limited to the fact of product and price comparison but the POC & POS still remain the mall and traditional Brick & motar stores. Coupled with the fact that purchase on internet require credit or debit card something which Indian are yet not very comfortable with & latest threats of hacking the password or personal financial details has really been a set back for the Indian e-commerce business.

The answe to this will be "YES" only when the the delivery mechanism is done through internet. Everybody thought there will be paperless office after the advent of computers, but use of paper has increased manyfolds. Everybody thought there will be no more painting once there is camera. There is another factor to it. People do shopping not just to meet their basic needs. They do shopping to meet their emotional needs. Its a kind of joy, entertainment and pleasure. That is the reason why, there is a lot of boom when this new organised retail has come into practice. Earlier people used to go to a store, stand outside and give a list of things that they need and get the things done. Those days it was just a duty. Now when the open shopping has come, choose your stuff has come etc, there is a lot of boom. That is because of people enjoy shopping, which will vanish when one tries to buy through net. So, there will be a bit of gain for online shopping especially those who are old or handicapped can gain benefits, else every channel of retail will continue as is. Internet can act as a pre-sales mechanism for retailers before they walk into a store and make purchases.

It is difficult for online marketing to grow in India because the Indian consumer psychi. is very much influenced by touch and feel which is not possible in as online store. besides with the increasing reports of stealing credit card information and other such acts e-commerce is something that Indians are not very comfortable with. even if we look at the stats e-bay has not been able to mark its presence in India.

Agree with shetal...as online purchase increases..threats also increases...people feels better while online purchasing...but after sometime they realize that they have done mistake by revealing their private detail on the protal...that is due to hackers not because of companies... Having reliable payment gateway is the most crucial part...be careful
