While I agree that cars are one of the major reasons for traffic congestion, how many of us would prefer to use the public transport system, which is still not up to the mark in all over india? There is too little to blame the others... I'm seeing some interesting thoughts from people about pooling... But, one does have the car for their comfort and time. If everyone becomes discipline and follow the traffic rules, most of the problems will come to an end. Besides, the govt should invest in building infra and effective public tranport system. Till then we will all be talking here with no end results...

Car registration only for people who have Car parking & numbers to be actioned . Then all Cities traffic may controled. More than Infra it is how we use the same , lane despline, parking , follow the route are more important. We add lot to traffic not Govt.

Absolutely YES! For that matter any additional vehicle coming on raod will add to it. Govt must consider few options: 1) Levying deterrent charges/taxes on cars - equivalent to base cost. And even must ask for re-repayment/renewal at market cost after say 4-5 years for continuing to use 2) Must be allowed if buyer is having parking space 3) A car must carry minimum 3-4 persons 4) Need to allow certain number of cars on given weekday. 5) Even can link it to voting - If voted in last election then only buy... Automobile industry is strong enough. They just want to sell the cars. No concerns about social or environmental effects/hazards. May be options look complex/delusive... BUT can think of! NJ'oy

Using cycle in traffic management is not a pessimistic look but, on the other hand, it gives plenty of benefits, such as keeping you physically fit, help reduce global warming gas, saves fuel energy but, we do not have cycle lane marked in many of metro roads. Even, if it does exist, it, all used by road-side vendors. No doubt, for smaller distance, the use of cycle is to be maximized. It also gives boost to cycle industry . Ever aspired car Industry has established its tentacle, all over the World, but, the crucial problem is fuel availability & its price hike. Not merely, the more use of cars creates Traffic problem in Metros but, also, doubles the probability of accidents as it is said to be in time for an event. Considering these, I believe , the use of cycle will give a greater relief from traffic accidents & fuel crisis that we, all nations, face.

Thanks for your referral miss. I agree with you that "We should act like responsible citizens" but I don't understand why your just pointing that car. Is car making the main role in traffic congestion. Practically the traffic congestion is made by two wheeler because the person using two wheeler just think to move forward in a small gap. Even they can able get back they don't. Traffic congestion is not only depends on the vehicle and driver, it also depends on the automatic signal, traffic inspector, road inspector and finally the government. Few people can't do anything with these. I am sorry.

Yes, cars are definitely causing the traffic congestion but the root cause is the population explosion and inadequate public transport system...!!

We can purchase the car easily than running it in our metros. If anybody interested to go by bikes or battery operated cycles etc, he has to face the smoke and pollution of moving cars. All spent their hours on FM radio. At present, controlling traffic through surveillance cameras and punish the rider for whose mistake traffic jam occurs may solve the problem to some extent.

Pragya though I agree with you that responsibility is still missing to a great extent in our citizens. If the citizens are responsible a lot of problems will be over. Unfortunately here every body is busy with his own and not the city or country. The day it will happen our country will change for ever.

Definitely yes. People should also use other mass means of transport - Metros, suburban trains, buses, etc., wherever possible. This will ease the traffic congestion as well as save precious foreign exchange for our country while making fuel available for our future generations. Every city or town should have a metro which fulfils the needs of transport of their residents. Look at Hong Kong, Singapore and many Chinese cities where MRT or MTRs have really eased the traffic congestion as well as reduced the pollution levels. Even Dubai has started its own metro recently - which is a great success in terms of traffic management as well as environmental management. Walking and cycling are the best - for short distances.

Mr. Nilesh Jain, Please note that all developed nation and the recently developed nation have a robust car manufacturing industry. It is a known fact that these engineering side of the manufacturing sector brought about growth and development in these nations. The auto industry also brought about large scale developments in lots of related as well as non related industries around the world. When people prosper, they want all luxuries and it is the job of the government and its employees to see to it that these aspirations are met.

This might seem like a odd statement, but the truthful fact is this - It is the 2 wheelers, Auto rikshwas and metro buses that weave in and out of lanes causing much hardships to all users. Most car drivers / owners, I say MOST car drivers and owners follow lane discipline. They are scared about causing dent to their vehicle (due to the expenses involved in repairing the damages). Whereas most 2 wheeler driver aren't bothered about these and just weave in and out of the traffic without even bothering about other users. What to say about the Auto drivers, most of whom are road ruffians. And then the bus drivers who aren't bothered much because it is not their money which is spent in either purchasing or repairing the buses which get dented in the process of hitting other vehicles. And then, the buses just stop (instead of the road side where the bus stand is situated) in the middle of the road causing traffic jam. These are the ones that cause lots of traffic jams and also accidents and it is better to correct these rather than blaming the poor car driver/owner for traffic jams.

Traffic congestion is not necessarily due to the presence of the huge number of cars. For one thing it is the sizes of our roads. Road widening often gets into all sorts of political wrangles. One other reason for congestion is the non intuitive management of traffic by the cops or the design of the sinalling systems. Activities like Metro Construction that are prolonged beyond the originally planned completion schedules apart from bleeding the exchequer also puts the average commuter(read: taxpayer) to a lot of inconvenience. For instance even a slow moving traffic is better than one that has been brought to a halt by a uncontrolled U-turns being executed by big-sized vehicles, allowing parking of vehicles like passenger carriers on main roads in the rush hours and the like. There is a lot to be said on Road management, including diversion path setting.

A few years ago our city planners and politically elected leaders made a mistake. They thought that most Indians would never prosper and would always be stuck in poverty and never own cars and other vehicles. Hence, it is not necessary to have wide roads. One can excuse the politicians, because most of them were uneducated and only bent on fattening their purse. But the educated engineers who worked in the town planning division are the real culprits. It is the lopsided planning of our cities that has led to the problems.

Traffic is a problem in most cities around the world. The idea is to have :- a. Better and multiple public transport systems. (Bus - some of them A/c, Rail Systems - Metro, Mono, MRTS, etc., Dedicated Bus corridors, better and smaller transport vehicles like autos and taxis, etc.) b. Car pool may work for larger companies with many employees staying in any given single location. Best would be to have flexible timings for some employees - like the ones in IT industries, accounts, legal department, back end operations, etc. Some of them can also work from home.
