When I was a kid I was a big fan of Panchatantra and Tinkle and was always reading them, as times have changed and with technological advancements these days, now even mobile service providers are also providing Comic books through their VAS services. Recently, in news, it was told that kids entertainment channel Cartoon Network is launching its comic characters like Ben 10, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo and Dexter on mobile handsets and will be available now on mobile handsets through telecom operators like Airtel, Idea, Reliance Mobile and TATA DoCoMo.

Cartoon Network has tied up with mobile value added service company Nazara Technologies to manage and distribute this service. Mobile users can download Cartoon Network comics at varied price points from Re one per day, Rs 10 per week and Rs 30 per month, depending on their operator. It is also planning to introduce a customised Java application next year to download an entire Cartoon Network comic to read in one go.

Do you think this kind of service will replace the traditional comic books?

According to a study, almost 63% of kids use a mobile phone at least once a week in India. This highlights the fact that mobiles and mobility is an integral part of a kid's lifestyle. By introduction of comic books in handsets, the cell phone addicted children will get the whole comic in his handset itself which has no danger of getting destroyed or lost, easy to carry and as we know the world is getting technical, I think in future mobile comics will replace the original comic books.

Whatever it may be. Comic books have their own place. The fun and interest it gives in its hard copy form can be never replaced by cell phones. Maybe in future it may get a stiff competition from mobile comics but they can never overtake cell phone comic's market.

I agree with Radha. When I was kid, I was addicted to comic books because of which I used to buy a lot of comics which used to become a problem in carrying at the time of shifting house. Also, lot of comics used to become tough to maintain. Had this technology been there in those days, I would have lot of comics with me since these many problems wouldn't have been there at that time...
