With Telecom Operators banking revenue growths on Value Added and Content Based Services and the technology evolution focussed on data services; It is apt to raise the age old telecom technology debate: CDMA v. GSM?

There could be numerous arguments: Technology Roadmap of CDMA evolution? Initial Hiccups to support roaming? Qualcom's insistence to continue charging high patent fees resulting in higher cost for CDMA operators and Phone manufacturers? These and so many others, Are these the actual reasons? Or is it the economic and political muscle of GSM lobby and a possible national interest for countries backing GSM?

Hoping to get invoking thoughts... Enjoy :-)

CDMA can be considered as a superior Technology? I think yes, considering superior voice and data security, higher data speeds, spectrum efficiency.

The roadmap to merge with LTE is well in place. Nortel, one of the last major CDMA vendors declared its technology to seamlessly integrate existing CDMA networks into 4G LTE networks. However, with Ericsson- a GSM major, buying Nortel's CDMA and LTE business; it is not clear as to what will happen with this innovation.

The roaming hassles are history which hampered the growth during internationalization of Telecom.

Guess this is not the reason for decline, apart from Qualcom's approach to continue charging patent fees ignoring the long term sustainability of technology and associated revenues. I think this is owing to the competitive advantage build by European nations to support Telecom Vendors establish standardized GSM networks and expand the same across Asia where cost for subscriber is a governing factor for success.
