An employee seeks challenging work environ or fat pay package depends on where exactly he is on " Maslow's hierarchy table". Some body who is lower on the table will seek to get social security ( housing, money etc). His actions will be decided on this. he will seek a job that provides more money, incentive, material benefits & secure career growth path. somebody who is higher on the table will try to " SELF ACTUALISE". He will seek to discover his other dormat abilities, skills & try & make the best of them. The classic case are well established executives who get into song writing, painting, sports etc. They are more inclined to do what is their passion & not for money or behefits.

Most of the entrepreneur people will forego hefty pay packages for the sake of a job profile of their choice & challenging work environment but most of the people make their decision depending on factors, such as job satisfaction, growth potential, ease of switching over to desired function, company culture, working hours, relevance of prior work experience, challenge, growth, feasibility to switch to favorite sector, growth opportunities, current financial position, brand name of the company and feedback from the people of the company........
When given a choice between working for a challenging work or an hefty pay package, I will opt for a company in the challenging (new assignment) & growth phase.......:)

It's really nice debate. Actually an ideal scenario is where you have both challenging environment and good pay and that's the workplace where people work for long tenure. However challenging environment depends upon individual's passion towards their work. If a person have a great passion towards his work then even if the work is not challenging he/she will make it challenging because of sheer cause of passion. I support challenging work environment where everday you do something new and it automatically create sense of growth in yourself and you sleep well in the night by thinking you have achieved something challenging or did something new today. So if you have challenging environment then you can little bit compromise on pay package.

Challenging work should be preferred first, as its environment teaches us how to deal with the tricky, stressed and competitive situations in the work. Even challenging work environment helps you in learning new concepts in and outside your specific work area too, where you try all possible ways which could lead you to the challenging success. But at last it's the priority of a person and it is different for al individuals. For some indiciual who has not reached a specific financial goal for him the Pay Package would be the first priority but for the one who has already attained his financial goal for him a challenging work environment makes him happy and satisfied. So we cannot set priorities for all but it all depends on the needs adn desires of an individual.

A sincere request: Please do not shy from saying anything on the other side of the fence please. This doesnt reflect on you or your attitude, it will reflect only your priority. This is not a debate to understand a person but to understand a view looking into todays scenario!! Money is definitely a necessity so please do not shy from writingour mind!! Thanks a lot :))

I would also prefer challenging work environment over greater pay package because no matter how much you pay to an employee. If he is not job satisfied, he won't stay for long. Our BPO companies are the best examples...

Great Pay Package from a reputed company always offers a challenging work environment. Challenges are important but pay package is equally important.

I think when we decide to work ,the primary thing that we look for is money. Unless we can satisfy the basic requirements of our life which again is possible if we earn sufficiently, we cannot rather do not start thinking of higher motivators like 'a challenging work env'... The term " sufficient earning " is again subjective. What for me is a decent package might not be for someone else. Once a person feels his pay package is sufficient to help him quench his requirement of a decent lifestyle, he looks out for challenges and achievements which helps him to manifest himself.

I personally prefer a good great package before joining an organization along with the company's reputation in the market. why because .. we prefer good education in good colleges, inorder to get placed with good companies with good packages. Companies who pay you good manage to get the best out of the individuals giving them the challenging work Environment. So why to compromise with low , when you get the same challenges in more. These days only a performer can survive in a company and the employers are ready to pay high if they get the skills and talent, they want.

Of all the things promised in a job interview, you can only rely on the salary that both parties sign on as part of a contract. As per my experience, recruiters will sell a job to you by saying that the job is very exciting even if it is not. If you choose according to the challenging work environment you will be taken for a ride. On the other hand, if you chose because of the great pay package even though you wanted a challenging work environment, you have the satisfaction of knowing that you made a compromise. Plus, if the work environment is challenging and that is the reason for your overall satisfaction, you can think of it as a bonus. Of course, this is generic...there would be exceptions to the rule.

Thanks Hrudanand!! I like the sound of "Its all about the MONEY HONEY!!"... True indeed. I also liked the way Deepak has posted his thought. Interesting situation. What if you are in a challenging job and a neat pay package?? Is it a classic case of "Right Place Right Time"... OR "I deserve this. I have worked my a** for it." You know if this was an examination and it was a text book question, the answew would always be CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT!! But in reality the truth is that people look forward to the day when the sms on your cell phone says, "Salary of INR XXXXX.XX credited to your account..." Those are welxcome words on your screen. Thanks for the participation! :))

Once you open up your mind, discussing things that may be taboo becomes a thing of past!! I really thank Mr. Dikshit and Jaisimha for being so frank and true to themselves!! This is what I like in a debate here or anywhere, one should not feel what the others will say if you are on any side of the debate. Please speak your mind!!

It all depends on what stage of life you are in... besides as long as you have the zeal and enthusiasm, I think you can find ways to make your job more challenging. I could be wrong on this cause I have not been in a job that I have not found a way to make more interesting. (as of now) And like they always say... "The grass is always greener on the other side of the mountain"
