I am not so aware about present situation of cisco, but one thing I would like to say here, cut workforce is not the right solution if company loosing the ground of a market. Company should determine who is responsible behind this. Competition in the industry of technology is very brutal and knowledgeable, and experienced employees are backbone of company, but few management people ( usually highly paid) take such kind of imbeciles decision to hide their own mistakes. If company cut few percentage of employees salary (including top management big fishes), then problem will resolve.

Yes it is not the only solution but sometimes circumstances lead to such decisions. Sometimes reducing the number of passengers is the only way to save the ship and here ship is more important to its owners.

Thanks.Anand for referral. Any company set up without considering the cover for risk is not a company but a conglomerate.Such an entity is formed around the revenue earning. The move to cut workforce will jeopardize the profit sharing.I do not know the strength of cisco,Seema must be aware.Instead the company should frame a strategy of out sourcing their lean load proportionately to the staff. This will help them in long run.

There are two sides in this Employee Side and Management Side...

Because of the mistakes happened by the Management reducing the Work force is not right solution. Manager will force his decision to others and when others thinks it will be a googly..

Why this is happening is because of lack of knowledge... and lack of experience in the respective field..

No organisation would prefer to cut workforce if everything goes smooth. Due to higher price and sale drop one need to take such decision. Else the overheads may lead to serious problems which will affect everyone directly or indirectly related to org.

In my childhood I listen a proverb that " Man made machine, Machine doesn't made Man" so reducing Manpower means reducing efficiency of Organisation.

In the slimming process, they may resort to retrenchments. Ofcourse, this is not the only solution. There are many areas to look in to cut the costs. It would be a hasty decision. In the long run, talented workforce may avoid joining CISCO. It would be disastrous for the organisation. This strategy is not a valid strategy in the present times.

I agree with Seema, there are plenty of possible ways to control cost. Retrenchment of workforce should be the last resort! Since we don't have very effective labour laws to protect them, they will continue to do this!

As you said Miss Seema, reducing workforce is not the only solution to stay live in the market.there are several other ways which can be implemented as soon as company realize their bad business outcome, like controlling the extra expenses, bonuses and even some part of salaries they can cut. Addition to that the Management can revise their business policies and plan of action.

As a owner of the company, mgmt. is free to take such decision, but it should be informed the employees, well in advance & should give atleast salary of 3 months. Thanks for referral, Anand.

Though cutting force must be avoided as far as possible on humanitarian grounds but keeping the organisation running is also a very important factor. If organisation collapses all suffer permanently.

If the business ecosystem desires so be it. Nothing new companies have carried out restructuring exercises from time to meet to stay afloat and keep the top and bottom lines healthy
