The mobile phone is a revolutionary invention no doubt and whoever complained that mobiles are hampering the studies of college going students please pay attention. Few colleges in Karnataka are using cell phones to improve the academic performance of students and also to discipline them.

In a deal with colleges like Seshadripuram First Grade College, Seshadripuram PU College, and Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women; IPOMO Communications, a Bangalore-based firm has launched various applications for mobile learning. Get set for your college lessons via your mobile.

The tool called the IPOMO (Interactive Platform On Mobile) Campus features a learning, assessment, and administration platform. The app helps the colleges in handling internal assessment, marking attendance, profiling students and announcing results. The application also allows them to take mock tests.

But, should this type of mobile education be allowed??

This looks like a nice initiative in a Bangalore college, today kids who are always glued to their mobile phones and today a mobile phone supports hell lot of applications and softwares, and if something like this is supporting their education through their mobile phones, which makes their life easy and also the teachers life easy, and the best part one can take tests and exams in mobile phones, less papers will be used which is a good thing, this is a classic example of how education system is evolving with technology and we will get to see more such initiatives from other colleges in future for sure.....if we cant change how students behave these days, take innovative steps like this which gets response from both students and teachers, and gives you the result which one expects in the first place. At the end of the day imparting knowledge to students is what matters......surely times are changing at a rapid pace....

In fact a PC is better than a mobile phone as suggested by Ms. Neha. To be more appropriate may a Lap Top which can be taken anywhere and thus ensures the mobility.

Its mostly beneficial to use technology and resources in positive manner, so nothing wrong with this idea, but there is a ?mark for 100% communication and understanding for student & vice versa.

Ms. Disha, good debate you have started and support the views posted Dr.Ali Ahmad. However I have some reservations. Despite it is being a good mode and less consumption in papers & time, one has to look into the other side also. The interaction between students and teachers is the ideal one especially the doubt clarifications. Moreover using mobile phones continuously or frequently will create other health related problems.

Thanks Dr. Ali Ahmad for the referral.

Definitely a good move.  Will save a time, money, infrastructure, environment, etc. etc. But need to pen down the guidelines to select either college or mobile learning.  Leaving both the options may result in misuse of it rather than rightfulness.

CAN BE A VERY POSITIVE INITIATIVE... ONLY IF, THE DELETE " OPTION " IS DELETED...

So the Students cannot Delete this, as they would to other Messages.

What Say ?

Disha, you seem to be talking about things that are mostly administrative. Even internal assessment is an administrative matter if you leave out the actual submission. Mobile phone is another instrument / tool in our life and it should be exploited for maximum advantage.

However I am not for classes streamed on mobile web and watched on mobile web. There is something about a class room atmosphere that positively promotes learning. Even sitting in front of a laptop screen in your own study desk at home and taking a web based course is ok. But some how a class / course streamed out on the mobile web....uhuh.....i cant accept that. It trivializes the process of learning too much.

Interesting way to attract students to ensure that the assignments are completed and sometimes students who are not able to attend college due to physical injury or any other reason will still be able to complete their assessment and course.

However, there is no substitute for direct interaction between the teacher and the student. Thus, this mode of learning using mobile phones could be considered as an auxiliary and additional mode of learning apart from the time trusted teaching techniques of direct interaction.

Thus, this mode of learning could be allowed to supplement the existing modes of learning provided the health aspects of using mobile phones are found to be satisfactory.

Additionally, exams may not be very conducive if conducted through mobile phones as the element of impartiality will be negated....!

Thanks for the referral, Disha...

With smartphone sales zooming past PC sales and with the screen sizes becoming respectable it is inevitable that drastic changes will occur in the teaching arena specially when the segment are always on mobile.

it's a good step towards study and a posative use of the inventions. One must move with time to fullfill the requirments by any means.ALthough assignments should be done in person.

More innovative methods can be adopted but whatever is adopted is good and there is always scope of betterment is there.

Yes it is good and will catch up as time pass by but at the same time all the exams assessment should be made in person in collage premises. You know if these instrument takes on the collage life will be lost and the students will become more mechanical in approach as compared to human approach since the same thing expectedly will be practiced in schools also.

So I agree partly with you. Please dont leave everything to machines.

Availability of classroom lectures on mobile phone will enable the student to focus on his studies at his convenience. It will empower him access to his studies anytime anywhere. This is a very positive initiative being used by all Global Institutions like HEC,Paris among others. The more alternatives for quality education are made available, the better it will be for the society to chose the best for enhancement of our knowledge.

Thanks for the referral Ms Disha.

A few years back when long distance learning was introduced it was not supported by a lot of people, same with E-Learning. But both have proved that more and more people are opting for both as it is making life easy for a lot of people.

With the introduction of college lessons on mobile, things will certainly be easier for lot of people. Of course, some time will be needed to make it more “happening” and people to adjust to it, still it is a good idea.

college lesson should not be allowed by mobile phone but we can do one thing that we can forward knowledge and study tips. because quality of education needs detail study which can't be done through only mobile phone.

When compare to ancient times today's technology is  broadly developed but it useful for idea reference, business motive, communicating people or recreation point of view.In education or teaching line, one have to manipulate the topic with the help of hearing, acknowledging with the help of drawing, understanding with the help of deriving a equation and summarizing with the help of language provided by the lecturer. This is the basis things like taking notes, taking drawings roughly are regular practices in this world,it is impossible to satisfy all those techniques whether by mobile, internet or anything.

Already, on-line courses / lessons are available that is cheaper comparing to mobile learning. Because, the learner will be paying to the College and the Mobile carrier for downloads. It is an extra burden on students. Obviously, it is included in the  College fees.

On-line web based course are much cheaper & convenient for study. Whereas Mobile networking can be had for monitoring / carrying out a surveillance on them. In Tamilnadu, in many of the private schools, students attendance, progress report, examination schedules, program schedules, meetings etc are sent & followed up with parents through Mobile networking.

Though, mobile is quiet handy & portable to carry everywhere, money involved is a bit high that may not be affordable to all. However, Mobile networking can be maintained to gear up students & their activities initially.
