Intelligence agencies across the world are building up a Facebook-style databank of international terrorists in order to sift through it with complex computer programs aimed at identifying key figures and predicting terrorist attacks even  before they happen.  Here the aim is to amass huge quantities of intelligence data on people no matter how obscure or irrelevant and feed it into computers that are programmed to make associations and connections that would otherwise be missed by human agents.

It is said that it is already being actively pursued in Iraq and Afghanistan where thousands of people have been arrested and interrogated for information that could be fed into vast computerised databanks for analysis by social network programs.

In the US alone, hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on developing the data-mining techniques.  This social network analysis will be giving the whole of the 'Facebook-style' data where one is going to analyse it mathematically to tell you who the critical people are.

They will also be coming up with 'metanetwork' analysis, which is a a more sophisticated form of social network analysis. Where one will be able to monitor terrorist networks in real time and detect any changes to indicate that an attack is imminent.

My question to you all is Should Intelligence agencies devise some thing like "Terrorist facebook"?,

I think no, even considering all the help that one can get from this, it is really difficult to get to the exact point, as there is still nothing that is concrete that has happened in this technology. Critics say such a doctrine is time consuming, wasteful and counterproductive. They have also suggested that it has led to gross violations of human rights, with hundreds and possibly thousands of innocent people being detained and interrogated for longer than necessary to provide social network information.

It is premature to say how effective this will be, as people will not divulge the numbers. And I think there should be something better than this to tackle the terrorist problem...

It is welcome idea, this way entire International terrorist network can be traceable from all around the world. And it would help all the countries to communicate and co-operate  with International Policia, worldover. This may help put terrorists in a bracket, where data-exchange would be more sophisticated , and easily accessible.

India may have it's own site for such a data, because the world, largely controlled by some specific countries, may not, and does not respond to Indian Requests/demands for certain terrorists or their groups to be put in the International Data, for many dubious reasons, whatsoever.

Maybe this technique won't succed 100%, but still it would help out intelligent and Anti terrorist agencies a lot by providing them lot of informations. I therefore believe this idea shall be implemented in India...

I agree to what sumitra has said here and this kind of data mining just because one is talking regarding it will be subjected to detention for that matter, so it would be great if there is something else in this place like RFID where now e-passports are coming where one can track and monitor what that person is doing all the time.

If the intelligence is researching, I believe the protagonists (terrorists) will also be onto it!! I believe that they have their own intelligence working 24/7 too and with sophisticated equipment at that!! I am suew if there si something like a terrorist facebook on metavetwork, they would hack it and create megaconfusion network!!

Its a very progressive thought but I think its too farfetched... Better would be to invest the time and money to seek their hideouts, bombard them and flush the guys out!!! Maybe they would even make some saving!!
