Your company runs a soap plant in one of the states. You have to deliver a consignment of a particular chemical to keep the plant open and running. You reach the interstate border and the official at the border says, “Sorry, you don't have the right papers,  I cannot let you cross.”

If you don't deliver the consignment, the plant will close and 300 people will not be working.

Now the guy says, “ok, for a thousand bucks I can manage the paperwork for you”.

What do you do, and why ?

(let me add a note: phones are not working for some reason)

Honestly, I will pay up. Because the company is paying me my salary. I am paid for it. Even IAS/IPS officers pay up - though in an indirect way - why should I preach and don't practice? If it is my personal issue, I will not pay. I faced issues with Chennai customs about 30 years back for being rule-minded. But I won, ofcourse many months later.

I come across this kind of situation every third day in our company. It is very much advisable to pay up and keep moving. if you move goods regularly and develop and understanding with the officials concerned then things will move without any problems.

My personal view is to pay it as it is a question of survival of many people. You can sue him later for some other case :). Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. Nichepro technologies. Bangalore. http://nichesuite.com

I for one, will not pay honestly. But get all this before the highers-up for seeking further advice. May be I personally suggest them for the possible alternative available on site to get one from them. Obviously, that should make the show run even without inviting irk of Mgt for the reason of having collectively bargained the situation out.

This is a true dilemma in ethics for the person which go by consequential ethical approach.

However, the wrong doing can not be supported by the materialistic gain and loss explanation. Communication in a right manner affirming the ethos of organization to all concerned authorities/boss will solve the problem. Generally, if the problem is communicated at right time to all influential stakeholders, then outcome is always good.

Ethically it will be wrong to pay up blindly to reduce boss anger and do a great work of saving a 300 Human Working hours loss.

Ethical professional will see whether it is a bribe or fees for penalty for which he officer will complete all the legal paper work for penalty and give you the receipt.

If it is BRIBE DO NOT GIVE MONEY.

In this case the word MANAGE clearly indicates that it is not  fees/charge for penalty but it is a BRIBE.

Ethical professional will inform the BOSS, chalk out Plan B for the work and will tke a decision which will keep the ethical concerns alive.

There is a saying "Kaupeena Samrakshanardham Patatopaha"

Which means To save one cloth from rats, Sanyasi started growing a cat, with cat his responsibilities increases and had to finally marry, have house and all the other things that are not required for a sanyasi.

By doing one wrong thing, Though we don't foresee, We will fall under ramifications of such an act.

Imagine, This person gets caught, authorities check the papers and found one illgal chemical being transported across, they inform your government, they lock your office, then your boss fires you.

All for one bad thing. If you don't accept the possibility is atleast you stood for a cause.
