The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has taken Heinz India to court over an advertisement for its health drink Complan. The advertisement claims the drink can add two inches to a child's height. The FDA chargesheet, naming seven officials of Heinz India, calls it an exaggerated advertisement.

But Heinze are saying: "We are not aware of any such complaint having been filed. We stand by our claim and would defend the same with appropriate research study."

http://searchandhra.com/english/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/BrandYatraComplan.jpg

But a senior professor of a reputed medical college has questioned like, What is the rationale for doing this trial in 7-12-year-old children when the burden of malnutrition is the greatest in under-five children? Obviously, the results cannot be extrapolated for children of all ages." It is just normal wheat with increase in protein and one or two extra minerals but doing wrong promotion to sell their product is not right.  So, it is a request for all parents to just go naturally and not get influence by the promotional advertisements like these.

Is it the right way of marketing by claiming results like these??

Yes i am agree that I don' think it is the right way to market a product by claiming like grow 2 inches more than others, and become fairer than others in just 2 weeks. But its true that from Complan height can be increased even not complan only In childhood if a child is taking healthy food and milk with any suppliment. His looks will be healthy(terms of height and all). In the category Complan is best because in manufacturing of complan they are using 7 litrs of milk in 1 kg and other suppliments and in other drinks they are using malt abstract from grains and all. You can practically use it take 2 spoons of complan and mix in plain water. Water's color id not only choclater it will be milky chocalate you can serve it same as to your kid who are afraid of drinking milk or wont like milk. But in other suppliment like complan color of that is choclate only and kid can not drink it plain without milk. As we( me and my brother) in family were using Complan in our childhood any my height is now 6feet and my brothers height is 6 feet 1 inches.

so cant say like they are claining wrong.

I don' think it is the right way to market a product by claiming like grow 2 inches more than others, and become fairer than others in just 2 weeks, I mean I don't think that it is scientifically possible where they are claiming that one will grow more than other and be fairer...I mean show me a dark person who has become fair for that matter, then why do these products claim results as absurd as these, I mean they I know that they are targetting the fear complex in people's mind and every body want that elusive thing for that matter, there is fairness obsession, and now Complan ads are making parents feel that if whether their kids will be short in future and are marketing their products like these which is totally unacceptable for that matter.

For example when they say double the growth is reported is 200% while only 100% extra according to their own claims. Exageration will not hold good for long.

yes its true that certain adds show things that are not possible under common circumstances. But at the same time we also know that advertisement is not about telling the consumer what is there in offering under normal circumstances because he is already living in normal circumstances. In addition to it sole motive of advertising is to catch attention of the viewer n that is possible only through showing him that is not possible otherwise.

At least some one has challenged them. They are making tall claims in their advertisement just to sell their product. The age group which they are talking about, are the age when children grow on its own with simple rich diet. That is the growth phase of a child. Giving a supplement drink will have little or no additional effect. Therefore it is a false claim they are making and they must be challenged for that.

Growing tall is completely natural & depends on physical exercises. Foods are only the support. Please note that growing tall & growth in body are different biological process. Where growth in body certainly need foods but growing tall it is not necessary. But it is required to support for becoming tall. As you become older you will certainly grow tall even if you do not take proper food. So today's ad not only this but also many are fake to just impress the buyers.

I do agree with you Disha.

Growth factor doesn't limit to drinking of Complan or any other health drink, it depends upon the environment and the type of diet the child is taking and not but not the least, the physical activity which the child does everyday. Is should be promoted in such a way that it helps in growing but not it will make few inches grow

Complan-the meare name has created a illusion that when u hear that name ur mind automatically recognises it as a growth inducing factor.Tantalizing memories of some ads where kids and children hand on pipes to grow tall comes to ur mind..SO complan has become a brand or logo of growth. It cannot be challenged as of now..

Companies should not ad their products in unethical way but nowadays companies just want to earn more without thinking of ethics. So now it comes the role of government, government should take actions on it. There should be a law or regulation that if any company is showing any ad then that company must have to  prove it to govt and if its proven they can show the ad otherwise they can't. This kind of ad are everywhere, you can find every product claiming extraordinary features then is this only consumer's responsibility and risk where is our govt. Govt should take proper actions.

Mr Praveen , Thanks for your testimonial that you grew 6 feet tall because of drinking complan,  i am sure you must have been rewarded by your company for such a testimony, but for God,s sake don,t play with the future of our country for the sake of selling a health supplement. You can promote it telling the contents which you claim are superior to your competitors or in any other way, but it,s just too much to claim that it will increase height by 2".

Thanks Disha for such a nice topic.

I completely agree with your views Ms.Disha.

They are taking the advantage of the natural growth [ by default ] of the children in their age. They are making others fool.

Such tall claims carried  in this  advt. is not only misleading but unethical also, this is a high time some guidelines are made by competent authorities to stop  companies  play unfair games by picturization of advertisements in such manners to influence the innocent minds of people.

Todays product promotion policies are to take the customers or for that matter actual users by saying some thing which he she or they want but not possible under normal circumstances. Whenever I see this adds I really feel sorry for the consumers and as far as the company is concerned, they knows only one thing that is bottom line and so long it is growing there is no harm even if the customers are affected healthwise.

As far as legal options are concerned, in India it will take not less than one even upto two decades to get the settlement and that is the reason the company says if need be we will go legally. What a shame on such companies and most of them are not from India. It any way does not mean Indian companies dont do such things.

Thanks for refer and completely support your view, Disha.

Yet the truth is most ads that we see are either gross overstatements citing names like IDA or IMA or similar associations to promote. Of course there are PROXY Ads and not to forget ads that prompt you to feel like switching off the TV.

absolutely not.

There are an awful lot of misrepresentations in the advertising medium nowadays. from gaining height, to scoring awards in schools to meeting your lady love to fairness.....they practically seem to be guaranteeing all that they cannot deliver.

There should be a law called "truth in advertising" which makes such false claims a punishable affense.

it is not the right way but there are many companies doing it.i personally don't think any health supplement can improve height as shown in the add. so it should be stopped. at-least this type of adds should not be used in such a sensitive area like health.

COMPLAN IS ONLY TIP OF THE ICEBERG.MANY SIMILAR ADS ARE EXAGGERATED AND NOT REAL.EX: AXE,VIM,CLOSEUP,RIN, THE LIST GOES ON.HORLICKS  HAS STARTED A CAMPAIGN ATTACKING COMPLAN ADS.HUL HAS PREEMPTED P&G`S PANTENE ADS IN MUMBAI.TODAY THE CONSUMER IS TAKEN AWAY BY IMPRESSIVE ADS.MOTHERS HAVING SCHOOL GOING  CHILDREN ARE PREPARED TO DO ANYTHING FOR THEIR CHILDREN`S HEALTH AND STUDIES.THIS ATTITUDE IS BEING EXPLOITED BY THE ADVERTISERS.FAIR&LOVELY HAS BEEN INCREASING ITS SALES FIGURES FOR ABOUT 25 YEARS AND HAS MANY FOLLOWERS  WHO ARE ALSO HAVING ENOUGH SALES TO SUSTAIN THEIR BRANDS FOR A LONG TIME.THE BUYER SHOULD ALWAYS BE AWARE.

They are just doing for publicity sake so that their products sells well. By consuming their product it doesn,t make any difference in the height of the individual since growth is purely dependable on genetic factors, environmental conditions and immune system of the body.

The ads by Complan are mainly targeted for increasing revenue for the product, which is a logical activity when advertisements are used to increase the market for the product. However, it is not fully ethical to promote a product that will give superlative benefits, if used albeit based on a research study claim. In the growing phase, whether Complan is used or not, children will be growing based on various other factors. Hence, attributing it only to Complan may be a bit far fetched and it will be difficult to prove this absolute claim.

Thus, we have ombudsman like the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration who monitor the market for companies indulging in tall claims and try to rein them or check their claims by asking them to prove the claim.

Thus, it remains to be seen whether Heinz India can really prove this absolute claim fully based on a research study which may not mimic the real life situation fully across all the population groups and different strata of the society.....

I support your statement, Disha, but what can we do? It is the trick opted by ad agency & most of us have impact of that presentation.

Ex. Take advt. of Tide. Chok gayae! Is that result is possible by using their detergent cake ? But still most of us at least tried it once.

There should be some guide line or restrictions on the picturization of such ads.& if Complan is claiming just for the sake of increase in sale then they should be penalized in terms of money & there should be ban on that ad.
