As a construction professional I must support this side, but this is my request to all that please don't compare construction field with other sectors. As problems are same in each field & you can't change mindset of your team members. There is thin line of difference between stake holders of construction & other fields. Also environmental factors may be different for different field, but skill is required for any manager for Initiating,Planning, Execution, M & C to Closing the project. So I also support Project Managers from other fields.

Construction industry itself, is not organised. SO its always tough to perform as a manager in COnstruction industry. They more over had to dealt with the uneducated/ Untrained labors in large Numbers for Production. Whereas in other manufacturing / IT industry, Its well organized & with trained labors, for them its always a Playground to give their best. Rest of the issues are (most of all) same as in all Industries.

It is really difficult to distinguish whois better. As a construction expertise I would supportConstruction project manager with one count that they are subjected to adverse field conditions & lot of stringent situation. But at the same time I am really unknown of the envioronment where other managers work. However a manager is amanger who manages a project/task. Thus I don't find any difference between types of manager. I think all managers belongs to same type.

Construction project manager has a larger domain and canvas to deal with during various stages of project i.e. conceptualising/initialisation,planning,execution,monitoring and controlling. For a given value of end task a construction manager has to exert more as involvement of manpower and money is more as compared to other fields. Apart from that he has to liaise with more agencies and authorities during execution and monitoring stage. This makes him/her more aware and more expert in project management.

I support "construction project managers'. He has to be more attentive right from day 0, keeping into mind the end use of the structure which would be used by "other project managers" for their works at later date, to avoid dismantling / re-construction in structure for requirements of end use of the premises.

I do Support a CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER.
Since considering the level of uncertainity involved and dynamics of construction projects, it is highly mandatory for the Project manager to be very skilled and knowledgeable in all aspects of project mgmt. to be successful in a construction domain.
A Construction Project Manager is more well versed with all project management process since it is the BREAD and BUTTER for his daily activities as compared to OTHER DOMAIN PROJECT MANAGERS...!!!

Dear Nithin, I wonder how this question arose as you are a PMP.Project management is a common thing anf there is no superior or inferior emotion or knowledge in that. All are same. The basic industrial thing may varry but the tacts abd facts are same. You told construction project managers are facing more problems than others. Its because of Qulity managenet only.If your quality assurance plan ok .ALl will be handled easily.

Major problem of Project Managers from construction field is that they have to interact with unskilled & uneducated labor class which have huge impact on project & there are many other environmental factors ( seen/unseen)which are just not in your hand. i.e. delivery of any engineering material to be received on time, which itself is a project which starts from manufacturing unit & completed @ site but in process is carried out @ the time of it's fixing to it's place. So I also support Project Managers from other fields.

I would like to put my comments in between these two sides. As most of the people suggetsted this debate is not all having any significance from my point of view. It depends on each indiviuals calibre and every one should try to excel in their field rather than comparing his responsibilities or volume of work with some other peoples job with the same designation.

I think we have to give due respect to all who manage projects (when we talk about project managers). It is a general term for a person who is managing a project whichever field it might be.every discipline and every project has its importance ,it does have issues ,trouble shooting to be addressed hurdles to pass and success to be attained. It is just the same that we cannot say that a cardiac surgeon is better than a nephrologist and so on and so forth. just as every organ of our body is a sort of a project manager and each one is important we cannot give weifghtage to discuss this point

I think other project manager will bring altogether different perspective and sometimes it can bring the wonders. The responsibility of manager is to manage the project by identifying the stakeholders. I think even the IT project manager can handle the construction project very well.. sometimes much better than the Construction project manager, he can bring all the new methodoligies like Agile, scrum all into day to day practice.. dones not mean than involving labour then for stand up call.. but sure even that can be also thought for..

- A Project is a function of time, cost and resource and most important of all it must be profitable for the equity holders in the project. Projects Managers primary responsibility as an agent of the equity holders is to maximize profit by manipulating the three fundamental (time, cost and resource) within the strategic constrain set by the project ponents. Construction is just a specific domain. It doesn't affect the goal of the project manager

I am from the 70's and a construction Project Manager then was a "Project Manager" I do not see many such construction project managers now a days.
I have been a consultant for IT, ITES, Manufacturing, construction, Engineering, Education, Facilities, and many others and I have meet many a Project Manager who is better that some of the construction managers.
Please note a Project Manager has to be a Project Manager before he can be in any domain.
