Hi all,

Recently in one of the discussions I heard a senior manging consultant of a European IT Company saying that India is not mature enough to have consulting practice as in Europe. As I know, involvement of consultants - professional consultants - in managerial and technical  areas is less in India and more in Europe. Some of the European companies whose revenue are comparable to Indian mid range IT companies have more consultants and managing consultants on roll than the Indian companies. Also I hear that Indian IT majors like Infosys get bulk of their business leads thro' independent consultants.

Starting a debate here with esteemed members of TOOSTEP, about the state of consulting practice in India - pros and cons and future.

Request the members to throw their two cents worth?

 Malick.

Though India is an IT hub in recent years, we need to learn a lot from the practices of other countries. For example, when I was editing a book on diversity communication, I was taken aback to know that Indian companies do not have a policy on diversity, though we are a living example for diversity as a nation. Our companies might have been either blindly mimicking the practices abroad or inviting foreigners as consultants, without improving indigenous capabilities in this area.No doubt we have the strong intellectual and the technical base and what we need is innovation a bit.

What I understand from the introductory write-up is that a senior european consultant claims that there are more independent consultants of european origin than indian origin. This probably could be true, however, do we have some data or stats available on this. Apart from this we also need to analyse the role of an consultant, secondly Indian companies have grown from being service providing entity to an service & solution provider. What is obvious from this is that the balance is gradually tilting & very soon we look forward to have majority consultants of Indian origin, whether on rolls or independent, thereby leading to the growth of consulting practice in India.

Dear Pasha and others,

The consulting practice jobs are carried out mainly in the US, UK and Europe while a little work is also based out of India and other countries in Asia-Pacific region. Understanding the client decision-making process is a tough cookie and moreover there are less expertise (people) from other verticals to carry out this consulting projects.
