Consumers may have to shell out more on electronics , appliances and fast moving goods. Talks of a rollback of the stimulus and increase in excise duty are making consumer goods’ companies apprehensive. Already reeling under the surge in input costs over the year, companies will be forced to pass the excise duty burden, leading to higher retail prices for consumers

It is said that this move is for the growth of industry. Whatever it may be one who has to buy will buy. But is this fair enough for the common public?

They should try to reduce the price of consumer durables. It should be affordable by people of all the classes. These changes make basic utilities. Consumers are already stretched as far as budget is concerned. This excise duty will add to it. It might be good for the growth of the industry but should that be the only concern?? Shouldn't they think a bit about the consumers as well!!

Sheetal I agree with your point of view. Unfortunately the high price of crude is spoiling the whole game and it is true for every country and particularly for us it becomes even more difficult.

But at the same time government will try and do its best to keep the things in control and keep the Amm Addmi happy.

yes factor prices going northwards the consumer goods will become costlier and also as demand is also increasing. so both cost push and demand pull factors are responsible for rise in prices of consumer durables.

No, it will sound the death knell of the consumer durables industry and large scale smuggling in the same would thrive. Govt has other measures to rein in inflation and increase revenue - reduce the salaries of the MP's and MLA's by at least 50%, charge them for all the useless travel that they do back and forth from their home state to Delhi, restrict their trips to Delhi to just one each for every session of parliament and so on.
