It is very important for each corporate to have a social mission and try and give back something to the society. With a mission only, a corporate can identify its identity, and ability to support society.

I too strongly believe that corporates have a social responsibility and must give back to society in a positive way.

Whosoever your customers are, you are working in a local enviromnent. The local society and people. You need to give back to the people from whom you are making your profits a part of it. ALL big good governance demands the same and is normally part of the budget. Unfortunately, this part of the budget invariably lapses or is short spent as management cannot find an "imaginative" big budget item that will make an impact on the local people. Digging a borewell, putting street lights are okay but they will need almost daily maintainance. A not working street light or borewell with the signboard "Installed by XYZ Manufacturing Company" can do more harm than good. And this street light or borewell is outside the core competence of this XYZ Manf. co. Therein lies the rub.

it has become fashionable to link all with business, hr for business, csr for business and so on rather trying to please the business community, sounding as selfish objectives - although nothing wrong if they could be integrated seamlessly with longterm commitments not backing out when the business objective is over. however, selfless hr/csr could be valued more by people and the community with no strings attached which could draw more admiration and credibility. you do it because you value people or the community and want to contribute something within your reach or even out of the reach when need be as part of your personal and organisational being, an urge from within to do good and cascade these values within the organisation. the moment a selfish objective is sensed one could lose the basic appreciation of such a move smelling some selfish objective. earlier days when Russia came with a leaf one would suspect why it is becoming so benevolent. all geo-political support these days has self-supportive political goals and lose the charm of the real friendship of the nations not able to become real friends, playing one against the other all the while becoming counterproductive for the goal of universal brotherhood in the true spirit drawing boundaries of co-operation limiting to the strategic framework. a saint selflessly rushes wherever there is need for compassion soothing people and helping with their needs and promoting their longterm development spiritually and materially. the scriptures do not prevent a businessman from becoming saintly in approach, perhaps it is the sychophants who encourage him to remain just a businessman. just sharing a point of view! regards/kshantaram
