With the increasing global temperature, chaning weather patterns impacting agricultre and resulting food inflation crossing 16% it looks like nobody is worried about it anymore and everybody is accepting that ita a fact and nothing could be done about it.. Is it true ?

Many Corporates go on a-forestration drive by planting several plant on a day in a year to make headline forits CSR. But no-one cares about the plants they planted.. effectively 90% of the plants die in a year if not in few months from they plantation.. Is the Corporate sector in India ready to make a real contriution by not only planting the plants/trees but also makeing some contribution to some social group and make it incharge of making sure that the plants turns into a tree.. and make the world a better place to live ?

I really appreciate and support this debate. I would like to add that we always want someone to come and catch our hands to grow, I accept corporate & government have a larger contribution, but as an individual we also have to learn to be responsible. We have to realize and understand what we leave for our children and children's children "a world of nature and beauty or a world of disaster and Catastrophes".

I had a casual talk with some XYZ national and he said India is a dirty country with lots of junk etc... I spontaneously with small knowledge said India’s population is so big that to control anything is difficult then he immediately said “look at china it is more populated than India" I could have continued my debate with saying that density of population, land spread etc... Etc... But the bottom line is; he made me realize that the people of the nation also work for whatever kind of development is.

Well the corporate is big but the people who work for corporate are bigger and the people who consume the corporate products are even larger.

As a citizen we don’t even care for tax issues, like we buy products but we don’t care for bills just to save few rupees. We don’t ask “is it environment friendly?” etc... Waste lots of energy, paper, clothes, food etc.... just start counting the list is exhaustive.

How many parents want their children to become agricultural engineer, or dream that they do at the least B. Sc in agriculture? How many parents like their children to pursue a profession as agriculturist?

There are so many things that has to be looked into along with this issue.

But we have to start somewhere so I would say it is a good attempt and god bless you in this attempt.

Topic bit unclear to me like what global warming got to do with 16% inflation.Planting few trees in company land is entirely different from agriculture.            OK,if you want to say that corporates should be made to bear additional duties and taxes beyond the huge burden they are already bearing, then it is different.                                                                                                                                       But I really think that say a corporate which is best in Software or making Toothpaste or Pharma products or power plants,if they are forced to divert time, effort, money and key employees in something which they know nothing about, and that too round the year(otherwise the trees will die) is it a really wise thing to do as a society? I mean, what do you say?

The quantum of greenery required at present to manage economy, environment and ethical values of human growth is not existing. Corporate development has been a major reason of loss of greenery. CSR is definitely a great step towards supporting social and environmental causes. When we support society we also support economy and ecosystem. Therefore supporting agriculture and forestry activities are the major areas where CSR can concentrate and invest for a large and long term benefit. In agriculture conservation of agro-biodiversity and identification of appropriate germ plasm to address food and livelihood issues with right use of science and technology can definitely make a change the face value of corporates. Forestry has other area that will not only support environment but also the economy too. I hope corporates will be happy to be in such activities.

S.. corporate sector can do many things in preventing food inflation and overtake global warming... but they are not doing so.. atleast one corporate companies can undertake planting trees. they can make it a project in protecting the earth. i dont know why the IT companies not coming forward. they can help government

CSR contributions should be channelized into multiple streams by regulation. Apart from projects owned by corporates,  we should have regional nodal agencies under Public-Private Participation model who can pool together CSRs and develop regions in terms of infrastructure, poverty eradication/ standard of living, education, afforestation/green drives, group farming etc.

Arunangshu, I am not suggesting that Corportates need to put under any more tax burdon. In-fact they could get a tax deductions if they donate to a research institute working for Research & Development activities under certain tax ememption schemens. Let the corporates do their work well with full concentration on their business .. and let the registered social institutes take care of the plantations with the cororates's support.. in this corporates get tax deductions and the social institutes gets some finance to take care of the plantation and we could have more greenery around.. a WIN-WIN for all. this is possible only if corporates have the desire to come forward !

I feel the corporates should take care in planting trees and taking care of them so that afforestation takes place. Our world then could be more greener.

well i agree with you leena, but only plantation will not decrease food inflation. Govt. should take initiative to inspire farmers to cultivate more & help them financially instead of spending money on security of actors, politicians & VIPs

This is really an interesting subject. In my opinion not only corporate segment but our government also have to prepare some strategy together to for the benefit of agri segment. When we are talking about another green revolution, we have to think and implement something new in our approach so that both side have win-win situation. while we have seen use of IT in remote areas and how can serve agriculture in remote areas the same initiative is needed in other areas as well.

Hi Pramod, interesting debate. I agree with you, this is the need for the day. Every corporate companies should start growing trees with the available space to meet the climate change. The employees should insist and motivate their management to go Green.

:)

The cost of maintaing the tress is not really high.. if calculated with current cost it will be around 60 to 70 k per acre of plantation a year including manures & fertilizres and water. So the only hing need to mke it happen is the drive and desire to conserve the environment.

Jaideep, I agree that some corporates are going for green drive by planting trees but they are few and far between who actually mean it. If you observe carefully, many of them spend lot of money on making their own company campus green and nice.. some go for plantation on government land on the World environment days plant few trees here and their but no one takes care of them.. I feel its not a green drive ! Just imagine how much paper do a organization uses.. at least they should be responsible to compansate for that through planation In one or the other way ! right ?.
