corruption in India is basically due to our fault, we have such a mentality that we take a short cut root to everything and look only for our gains helping others to involve in corrupt practices. If we take a principled root follow system we may be a bit looser but in the long run our system will be less corrupt. Take the case of electing our representatives we look for the candidate who can benefit us not a person who is eligible for the post, and here lies the root of corruption.

I think it should be "Politicians & illiteracy"....its the result of poor leadership, dirty politics and illiteracy of common people....if people would be literate,AWARE then there might not be any room for corruption.

Every game has rules. Without rules game looses its sanctity. Much of the time we follow rules as if rules r for others and rules are not for us which I think leads to imbalances and frustration on the part of people following rules leading to frustration, brain drain etc., etc.,

However rules can be reviewed and changed depending upon the conditions.

President Obama said in India: “I saw new technologies and approaches that allow citizens to get information, or to fight corruption, monitor elections, find out whether their elected official is actually going to work, holding government accountable." This is based on what he saw in the demo of Association for Democratic Rights / National Election Watch. I agree that the sms enquiry can help to get information about the profile of candidates (education, assets, convictions, pending criminal cases) from ADR/NEW. But can it help in the rest viz. "to fight corruption, monitor elections, find out whether their elected official is actually going to work, holding government accountable?". We are seeing a phenomenal rise of corruption in public affairs - orchestrated in the recent CWG, 2G scam, etc. Corruption in lakhs became crores, tens of crores, hundreds of crores, thousands of crores and now lakhs of crores!! It is reported lakhs of crores of value fake currency is in circulation in the country in the form of rs. 1,000 and rs. 500 denomination currency notes. The cost of essential commodities have gone up multi-fold. The gap between the haves and have-nots is widening. Money power and muscle power is ruling the roost. In this connection, please see my recent comments on "Transparency and Accountability in Public Administration" telecast in NDTV-HINDU news channel at: http://www.youtube.com/user/ndtvhindu#p/u/13/4PiTICt-SZo from 2.58 minute to 4.27 minute from the proceedings of the National Seminar on "Transparency and Accountability in Public Administration", conducted by Tamil Nadu Open University on Nov 09, 2010 at Chennai. Justice Gokula Krishnan, former Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court spoke of the need for transparency and accountability in the three arms of a democracy - legislative, executive and judiciary. Is there a solution we can see in the near future or would there be further escalation of corruption?

Initially in the early post independance period ie 1950-1960 the masses were illeterate and unaware of their rights. They were also scared of the Govt officials especially in authritative positions ie. Police, Civil courts, etc. These persons resorted to get work done or get away from being implicated in complications by giving bribes. When others saw that they could get work done faster they also imitated them and gave up their right to fight for justice and uphold right procedures. Later as days passed by with more and more money flowing by illegal means the corrupt became so strong that those who did not yield to their demands could not survive and were forced to concede to their demands. This has now become the order of the day. earlier corrupt people used to hide their gains but now they boldly display their possessions in society. Unless an attempt is made to create awakening amongst yhe masses especially the children in schools and the youth there can be no change in the society.

A dormant public will always result in a sleeping beauracracy. Till we learn to step up and question everything that a politician says or does, we will be trodded over and injustice would prevail. As hardworking and honest tax paying (that is if we are paying the tax indeed) citizens we need to stand up and question where our hard earned money is ending up unitedly and not as individuals. If smaller groups join together and star questioning, it will turn into a mighty tsunami.

General public to be blamed without any hesitation, because they are selling out their right of vote for money, liquor etc. and encouraging the their elected representatives to rob them from and back.  They are concerned about only the short term gains and dont have the ability to asses the long term consequences.  They are unable to come out of their constricted view of caste, community and regional feelings.  They are failing time and again  to elect their representatives after due assessment of their ability to serve, honesty etc.

General public is also involved in corruption at some level or the other. People, even highly educated ones, take the route of their comfort rather than following the rules set by the Indian constitution. Be it giving bribe to a traffic inspector, by-passing all the steps in getting a driving license, or installing more than approved electric load in their homes... the list is never ending. We should think for a moment before taking any action, that how that action is going to affect our country. Is it against the system or supports the system. It is the mass of more than a billion population who makes the system, not a bunch of politicians and bureaucrats !

Yes our country needs simple demonstrative tools to implement biometric devices which can be operated in villages and you were instrumental even without electricity, with car battery the biometric devices could be sucessfully operated in villages your case study ain A.P and Bihar.Your work has been appreciated by

awarding you with Manthan  for implementing biometric device for eradication of corruption.

I think if the decision makers make it mandatory to have one or maximum 2 accounts in Bank and rightly said by you to use smart card.

It's our double standards to blame. We are hypocrites by nature. We do not wish to practice what we preach; but expect others to practice; and we like to preach morals to others (including me!).

Only total transparency in all thought and action can lead to total accountability. For this we must ban currency circulation, ban corruption, ban money laundering and make all transactions transparent on the web using biometric smart card. No one should be above law. Exemplary punishment must be meted out to law breakers. India and the world can be transformed in a short period of time.

The corruption has reached at a point of stage where it is difficult to reach a corruption less country; to this to happen the reform has to come from the top the Parliament, the Judiciary and then the Legislature and just like a good Governance Companies likes of Infosys, L.I.C of India where corruption is minimal. Let the President or P.M of our Country show the way i feel definitely

India can come in 1st 10 Countries with corruption less state, from the present

80 th or so position.

There is an old proverb. Roughly translated it means:

EVIL FLOURISHES BY ITSELF. IT HAS TO BE CONSCIOUSLY FOUGHT AND DESTROYED.

GOOD ON THE OTHER HAND MUST BE WORKED UPON CONSCIOUSLY TO STAY ALIVE AND FLOURISH.

Probably it says it the best. We cannot blame corruption on any one. Corruption, from concept to completion, everyone is responsible. We must all say no to corruption in any and every form. Assigning blame for corruption does not even begin to solve the problem.

i think when the politician's itself are corrupt , why to blame govt employees, the most important thing is that recently swine flu kiled few people and everybody was afraid of it and nevertheless corruption is more dangerous than swine flu, swine flu can damage few person's but corruption flu kill's the whole nation , the govt machinery of almost every department is weak, it is because of the fact that they dont want to change themselve's and then how can we expect the change in the whole nation , eradication of corruption is possible only when everybody will think that we are real son's of our mother india and doing some bad practice will hurt our mother, when this type of sence will touch of heart's , the corruption disease will run away from our system.most important is that those people who love india will definetely adopt the formula above , those who don't are enemiie's of our mother land .

Dear Anupam, I support your views.

& you are right that we are the basic reason for corruption in India.

I fully agree with you. It is general tendency of Indian public to consider politician & bureaucrats to be corrupted, but they are the responsible behind that politician's selection as M.P/ML.A./Corporator etc.

& we also use our influences in every part of our daily life to get work done.

True corruption in India is due to our fault since unless there are people who would like to bribe for getting favours corruption cannot exist. But there ends the matter. Now let us examine why we have a constitution and government which has the power of law, executives to impliment and mange the affirs of government and Police force? All of us cannot be honest and selfless. All of us are not rich and there are poor midle calss and the rich, thats why we adopted a constitution designed a system where the Government will work as per the constituion and ensure that the gap between the rich and the poor is reduced over a period of time and every one coming in to this world will live happily and share the nature equally. We provided the government in power through the constituion tools to do its job effectively and repair the tools as and when necessary to do its job effectively. We provided an Opposition to control the Government whenever it deviates its path from the constitution. This being the case how can we blame ourselves. Blaming ourselves only means corrupt and dishones people out number the honest people or you cannot find any honest and non corrupt person. The very fact that there is a debate going on on this topic clearly indicate that we do have people who have concern about the present situation of corruption and dishonesty in this country. So friends let us not blame ourselves but join hands to fight corruption. Dont loose heart. Dont wait for courts to decide about who is corrupt and the level of punishment to be given to them. After all it is you who have given this tool to the Government. When you know that there is corruption in judiciary also, dont wait for the system to decide instead mobiles yourself, organise and take decision. Control your representative in Government (MLA/MP/Panchayat member/Corporator and so on) yourself , not by defeating in the next election but when he is serving your constituancy. You have every right to do it. A Court cnnot prevent you. Dont let the courts paly with you. May be they may say it is contempt of court lawlessness and so on. When you are in large number and join hands success is yours.

According to my view Corruption undermines political, social and economic stability of India & Its Culture. It threatens security and damages trust and public confidence in systems which affect people’s daily lives. I think Although corruption frequently occurs at local or national level, its consequences are global; its hidden costs immense. Now a days Corruption not only has become a pervasive aspect of Indian politics but also has become an increasingly important factor in Indian elections. The extensive role of the Indian state in providing services and promoting economic development has always created the opportunity for using public resources for private benefit. As government regulation of business was extended in the 1960s and corporate donations were banned in 1969, trading economic favors for under-the-table contributions to political parties became an increasingly widespread political practice. During the 1980s and 1990s, corruption became associated with the occupants of the highest echelons of India's political system. Politicians have become so closely identified with corruption in the public eye. In six metropolitan cities found that 98% of the public is convinced that politicians and ministers are corrupt, with 85 percent observing that corruption is on the increase. Rasla.MB

In a country like India where more than 80% of people are poor (According to me the definition of poor should be" Poor people are those who cannot afford more than 50% of the goods and services available in the market" and cannot read write and understand what is good or bad for them and cannot judge who is honest and good") it is the people who have been elected by such poor people and are responsible for governing us through good governance are responsible for increasing curruption, dishonesty and bad governance. Very democratic system in India is utter failure. When only 60% of the population (rest being bellow 18 yerars) has voting rights and of which only 60% vote, if the party coming to power with a mear 35% of votes polled starts claiming that it has got peoples mandate to do any thing it wants and starts claiming people have endorsed the party and its candidates of all misdeeds they have done in the past and courts cannot touch them, can you call it a democracy? Politicians and and Bureaucrats (may be some of the civil servants are helpless) make rules policies and regulations by divide and rule policy learnt from the British so that they will retain power whichever party is in power. Relegious heads also have become selfish and a tool in the hands of politicians. We have a system where qualification, knowledge and experience is not required for people representing us and there is no retirement for them. Dynastic rules are still prevailing in India politics has become a profession to earn money. Why there is a differant rule for a Minister / Peoples representatives and for a salaried civil servant and working professional, when Ministers and peoples representatives enjoy more power, better perks and salaries compared to a worker with similar qualification and experience? If a Minister/ MP/MLA/MLC can be there without any retirement age then why it is so for ordinary workers. Why pension to be given to Ministyers,  MPs when they are not our servantsb us masters? Who are these people to ammend constitution do they have any expertise or concern for comon man? Constition should be changed by only by a body of elders comprising of eminant people and people without criminal records or any cases filed against them (even if they have won the cases) and not by elected goondas who raise their hands according to the wish of their party boss.

Nevertheless, Politicians & Bureaucrats, forms part of General public. I feel that, most conducive factor to increase corruption is through Politicians & Bureaucrats.

Illiteracy & sub-standard living of population, is being exploited by Politicians & Bureaucrats who follows a stringent rules and regulation, thats beyond the scope of the general public. This trend, as we see the need to implement system, sucks the general public & misguides to corruption.

We have chosen the politicians to upgrade the uneducated and innocent people through various plans. Whereas they utilized our innocense for their own benefits. Since our country is having only 30% of the educated people who are not much interested on election (dueto nohopes on politicians) the remaining 70% are voting with the hope but over the wrong commitments of the politicians. The real truth is "The Leader leads the people in wrong way"
