Consider yourself an IT professional with high skills ( you do posses high skills, don't worry :-) ). You get an offer from a company to join them because of the skills you posses. After a while you accept that attractive job offer from a new employer and as soon as you give notice, your manager surprises you with a generous counteroffer.

What will you do in that situation ?

Will you accept the counter offer ??

There are 2 ways to see every thing. Positive, Negative.

Here staying with your old compnay is much better then other option. As it is your continuing job, you know what's in. But if you will fight for new, you will be alone. 2nd you will be wasting your time and money and mental relax.

If I was given a counter offer, I would have rejected it and joined the new job.

Yes we have to be fair with the existing company but "How did the company suddenly realized the talent and skills one posses when he/she was leaving ?? "

Were they fair with us ?? I don't think so

If the company can't realize what talent one posses till he/she gives notice then how can one possibly stay there ?

Don't you all think it is better to join the new job, as he was offered a attractive job because they recognised the skills earlier.

Guys

Do not take me wrong when am writing this point. Basically I have seen over a period of time across various professional , who are more comfotable to accept counter offer.

I agree to all the points written my various people on the other side. It is perfect, but in the real world I have seen example of people accepting the same.It can be due to many reasons,

relationship with the manger, senior manager or mangement board

Pressure from the reportees, who have put there hard work for the manager could not like to let down by there mentor, just leaving for monetary issues

It all boil downs to the relationship we share our senior manger, manger  and how they could take it. Most of the counter offerr is needed as u could be in system at wrong time when salary revision could have happen, or u are playing bigger role than what u title or job description says, or the market dynamics have changed for particular skill sets, etc...

Hi All,

First of all, I would say this is a worthless debate. There is no point of debating on such issues.

All these answers are dependant upon subjective approach of any Individual. But what i think, we should assess the issue objectively and look at it after putting your personal experiences aside. BE NEUTRAL TO ISSUE

It's not about sticking to your decision. It is about to have a hard look and judge the issue strategically. What should be decisive here according to me, is better exposure and opportunity to grow and satisfy your thrust. So, move on or stay back, its all upto you after considering all aspects.

Known enemy is better than unknown friend. From your question I thought the reason for applying elsewhere was only the financial gain. If that is met with by the current employer, your accepting a counter offer will give you the same old comforts that you have been habituated with. You need not waste time adjusting to new environment and set of people. By doing so you are also exercising your right of being loyal and giving your company a chance for rewarding your loyalty. I do not think ego must come in a way to accept this simple opportunity.

I would recommend to stay with the current company.

One might have worked in the current company for a longer period and he might have built a strong relationship with the subordinates and leaders and having a good team. Which would have helped him in performing well. Now the question is , can he still perform considerably well in the new company ?

With the skill he poses he may put his 100% but team work really matters. So its better not to leave the current company and stay with the team. Now that the company has realised the mistakes they have made, they won't be repeating it in the near future.

A good example of a real-life case give ny Mr.Murali.I completely agree with him that if you are getting an attractive offer from othe company than you should except that and go ahead even if your previous company are making a counter offer....because you never know what can happen later on as clearly mentioned by Murali Ji.

Mr.Darpan i completely agree with your point that if one is looking for a new job then that means he is not satisfied with his previous job or there could be some other reason to switch to a new job...so if your previous company is trying to lure you with a salary hike then you should not be tempted to accept it..because sooner or later the issues because of which you were leaving that job will again crop up and then you'll regret your decision to accept that offer. So its better to go for an alternate job and try to move forward with it.

As I told earlier, I have faced this dilema some times and each time took decision to reject a counter offer. Here is an explanation

1. We do not go for a new job, just for increase in salary. One starts looking for new opportunities, when he sees that, opportunities to grow up in existing job are vanished and higher postions are already occoupied by persons. Then major objectives for job change are (1)higher position (2)more responsibilities (3) job enrichment(4) new environment and of course(5) higher emoluments.

2.As against this, when one is given counter offer, he should know, that only a problem of emoluments is addressed to. But road blocks in his career path are still there. That time, he should ask himself "Am I doing all this just for more money"?

3. Changing a job is a major career decision. When you undergo a thought process and reach to the decision of submitting resignation, you have a completed thought cycle and detached yourself from existing collegues, work environment. Now, getting back in the same environment will not be easy. It will never be same like good old days.

4.When you stay back just for few more lakhs, your collegues (and you yourself) already know it. That changes attitudes of all towards you and yours towards all.

The BEST thing is, when You put in your papers, understand that, you "Dana-Paani" here is over. Just move on.

Changing  a job and the company or getting to work for a new industry it  will help you to upgrade your knowledge and gives you a challenge and makes your working experience excited rather than sticking in a same place and doing thesame work day by day ..

and most important you get to meet new people from different nationalities and this will help you to build you communication skill ..

The new job. Newer horizons, newer challenges, newer self appraisals and of course newer pastures. Only thing to take extreme care of is that you must negotiate for a better package so that the counter offer should not deter you from your own ambitions!!

yes definitely, in these days of recession when one is not sure about the future security in a job like in IT and companies like Satyam nose dive, it's always better to accept the counter offer ofcourse only after counter chacking twice and then jump. Who knows what's happening tomorrow?

Hi,

Here is a real life story.

A friend of mine was making 12lacs when he got an offer from another big company for 15lacs. As this was a 25% hike, he jumped at the chance and informed his boss about his resignation.

His boss offered him 18lacs to stay back saying he is too critical a resouce to lose. He even offered a 6 month onsite stint withing the next 3 months. This guy was estatic. He got 50% hike, he could work with the same team who were almost his family, and on top of it an onsite chance. He rejected the offer made by the other company and informed his boss that he is accepting this counter offer.

Immediately, he saw a change in his team mates. They were jealous and started showing it on his face. He was cold shouldered every time. And these guys were his family, He worked day and night with them for the past 2 years, spent the weekends partying with them, went of treks. He was shattered. He did not know the best was yet to come. One month later, his boss calls him and says, the company can't afford such an offer to him and he is free to go if he chooses to.

By, now, the offer the other company made was expired. Moreover, he went ahead and rejected it saying his company is offering him a better package. He can't go back to them and ask for a re-offer.

This guy now works for Microsoft and is making more than his ex-boss could imagine. So, his story had an happy ending after all, but he faced hell for 6 months.

The lesson I learnt from his experience is, unless your boss is a relative or a jaan-jigiri dost of your's, and unless you get the counter offer for your current company in writing, and unless you are prepared to face some cold shouldering, its always better to take the offer and move one.

If you want, you can always come back to this company later. Then, you will be welcomed. But staying back by taking a  counter offer, think twice before you do so.

Here is a real time case. A friend of mine, a champion in his role was in a similar situation. His current CTC was 12 lacs and he got an offer for another big company for 15lacs.

When he tried to put down his papers, his boss offered him 18lacs. He was estatic, a 50% hike and he gets to work with the same team. He accepted it. Immediately, he realised that people around him have changed. They were jealous of him getting such a hike. He faced many cold shoulders. These were the people he spent 2 years working with, partying on weekend, going on treks.

He was shattered and the best was yet to come. After a month, his boss calls him and says that the company can no longer afford such an offer, so he is free to go if he wishes to. No need to serve the notice period too. He can get relieved in a week. By now, obviously the initial offer was no longer valid. And moreover, he rejected the offer saying his company is offering him better package. He cannot go back to them and ask for a re-offer.

Well, he is now working for Microsoft and making much more than his ex-boss could ever imagine to make. That is a different story. But, the moral of the above story is, Unless your boss is related to you or you best friend, take the new offer and jump. You can always come back to this job after a year of so. Well, that was the lesson I learnt from his experience. Hope this helps.

I agree with Devi kaladeen here ..... " ... that once you applied for a new job means that you want a change or is not happy with the current situation in the workplace. So the best thing to do is to move on"

Once you have already made up your mind to change, no point in looking back !

I agree that once you applied for a new job means that you want a change or is not happy with the current situation in the workplace. So the best thing to do is to move on.

I was faced with this same problem 5 years ago when I applied for a job with the World Bank. When I was selected for the job I sent in my resignation which was rejected by the Auditor General(my current boss)...he had just returned from the United Nations where he took no pay to work there for 2 years. He asked me to consider staying  and promised me better working conditions, etc. but that was mere promise. I had already signed a 2 year contract with the World Bank. However, I withdraw my resignation and they approved a secondment of 2 years to the project so I could retain my years of service...this was done with the intention that I will return after 2 years. After 1 year I decided I was not going back so I sent in my resignantion.

Once your mind is made up to leave....it is better to go.

good points, you shouldn't flake

If of course, all things are relatively equal except salary then you should come up with a threshhold of acceptance for the difference. Once past that threshold (big increase) then it is like any other business relationship where you are negotiating.  I find this acceptable completely.

This of course depends massively on such things as:

 - state of entire work environment in both old and new job

 - usefullness of experience (future applicability --> professional development)

 - rewarding aspect of work of old and new

 - economic future for old and new company (depends mostly on competence of leaders)

In my experience, if I was looking for a new job, then that meant salary was not the issue and thus I would stick with my plan for the new job.  I have had counteroffers before (and preventative bonuses when morale was rock bottom).

Now lets say you were approached and recruited without having been looking.  Then things are more difficult.  My choice in that circumstance was to go with the newer one due to great opportunity for growth, rewarding work, and biggest of all... economic stability of new company.  (e.g. had 0 debt or VC)

If you are looking for a job means that you are not satisfied with you current employer and there can be n number of reasons for the same so even if you accept the counter offer your issues will remain if supressed will pop up again and you loose the chance of getting a salary hike in the appraisal as you already negotiated an aggred to a salary ... So I will say Join the new job and new challenges
