In the Desi culture, when it comes to weddings, culture is given priority over religion. Never have I EVER seen a wedding without that Rukhsuti/Mehndi thingy. I don't know what this is called, but in many family wedding videos, I see that they make the bride sit alone on a chair/sofa, and everyone gets to look at her face, even ghayr-mahram young men. Nikah is given virtually no value.

Mr.Mohd Baksh, The contention is to have a convincing view on, which contributes to " a way of life". Certainly, religion does help developing religious faith but it can not be a culture. Culture is the one that is taken as a quality of the people / society. It normally, relates to arts, music, literature, life styles etc of people who adopted in the years ago / now being adapted to the modern developments. So, a major role is being played by culture as a way of life. (from rich to poor / from hindu to muslim to christian to buddhist)

Culture determines who we are intrinsically. After a point, religion makes no difference, as we are all of the nature of spirit, regardless of religion or caste.

Mr. Paranivelan, Art & Literature comes under, of the people / society. It is , therefore to be viewed as Qualities of a culture. Koran, Bible, Geetha are all, holy books that we are made to consider, but basically its all under the purview of Literature. I explained it in the argument.

Culture what dictionary says, "the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. ..." Culture is a quality related to person & his way of life
Religion what dictionary says,
Religion is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or a set of beliefs concerning the origin and purpose of the universe Religion is a belief aimed to control the self towards divinity. Obviously, Religion is an Instrument to shape their beliefs & culture that of, personal qualities. It is seen Religion as a subset of Culture. Because faith is also a quality of a person. So , what convince my mind is that Culture is a way of life.

Culture is primary; two people with same culture can easily communicate and co-exist, but two persons with same religion but different cultures are still miles away. Culture constitutes as a sound basis of societies or nations but not religions. Look Pakistan for example, it has fractured and failed even though it was conceived as the homeland for a particular religion. I have seen in Middle Eastern countries many Hindu, Christian and Muslim friends live together in single rooms from the same cultures, but never seen an Indian, Arabic or European Muslim live together in a room. Reason is abundantly clear they are divided by their cultures. The argument of primacy of religion in personal identity is a manufactured dogma.

A common culture for India is enough, don't mix religion. A good culture where we can have good relationship and value is more than enough to have a better country....

Thanks for the referral, Akshaya.... Religion that is subsequently assimilated in the culture followed will be a way of life. It is assumed that religion as propounded by the initial creators has more or less remained stable over a period of time and culture is the medium used to live a particular way of life. Culture will definitely assimilate tenets from various religions and there is a thin line dividing when the culture appears to be broken and when it is followed. This line can take the reference from the primary religion followed to ensure that the culture adopted is in line with the interpretational norms of the religion followed.......

i appreciate views expressed C/R.The origins of these two words is "Latin" where "cultura" now culture means "growing" and where "obligation" or "reverence" in Latin is now religion. These two words were/are important for the improvement in human living index.Religion per se has provided impetus to enrich culture and for development external input is very integral part.and that is what the religion has done.

Thanks for the invite. NO TO BOTH is my view. Cultural values keep changing. If a person from the past (1800s) time-travels and lands up today, he would find himself in an alien land. Culture and traditions of those days was different. Culture is not just classical dance, music and other arts but also a kind of way of life. It is how a person carries himself despite all vicissitudes in life. That’s why a dignified person is also called “Cultured Individual”. Still remember, Culture keeps changing. Religion or religious views also keep changing. The more dynamic a religion the more resilient it would be in adapting to the changing times. All the same, religious views also keep changing. Religion, especially Hinduism in the last 100 years and Christianity (during the renaissance), has undergone lots of changes. Here, I mean that the rules and regulations / process and procedures (sometimes unwritten) and understanding of the religion that were imposed by the ‘religious control groups’ and church have changed. And remember, Religion keeps changing, and it better keep changing according to times. One has to practice religion and culture, but not cling on to it. Use it like a pole in the hands of a pole-vaulter. Once the height is attained one has to let go of the pole in order to jump over the cross bar. Same is the case with spiritual growth of a person. What don’t change are the “Emotions” of a person and “Spirituality”. Pain, hurt, anger, anxiety, joy and all the other 160 other emotions are more or less the same over the centuries. And so is the spirit. Hence, it is better to work on “Emotional Management” and try to attain progress in “Spiritual Values” on an ongoing basis. When practiced constantly, it becomes a healthy way of life.

For sure i will be choosing the RELIGION. Religion is a complete package for an individual, family & group of people to live, behave, give & take during the complete life time. It also describle before life & after death. Religion can be practised in a fabric of many cultures within & it provide complete guidance without any confusion.

Religion is the way of life which directs our thoughts and helps in creation of good culture. Both are two side of a coin. All religion leads towards good culture and education act as catalyst in its development. So, as per me education is equally important for that.
