Dear Jatin You havent got my point which is that there is no point in setting games records forget CWG or world records when the field is depleted. WE can set game records in SAARC games but of what use it is. It will only serve the purpose of beating our own chests. It doesnt convince anyone. Lets see how the same atheletes that you have mentioned in your list fare in the current Asian games. If we even win half the gold medals, i am prepared to eat my shoe forget setting any records. And dont blame the public for it. Our athletes nor the govt is serious about participating in any games. They just do so as yet another outing. Or else why should there be more that 100 officials in our contingent for the Asian games out of which the coaches are only 33 i think. Govt officials including coaches have to be made accountable for every games and athl;etes not performing should be either handed out a pay cut or a grade cancellation. Only then will our sportsmen start taking things seriously.

Disha a good debate. I agree with you but at the same time India should prove this outside India then only we can say yes job is under process. It will take years before India turns to be a sporting power. The whole sysstm need chang like the bright sports persons should be in the game from early age say 10 to 12 and some group or body should able to identify them and once it is done say within next eight to ten years we can say yes we are a sporting power also,

Yes definitely it will make India a global sporting power, in spite of certain unwanted elements involved in the CWG. Now our govt should take care to ensure that these type of mega sports events should be handled/organized by the individual govt body like SAIL or other competent authority. Govt should not allow to handle by the ministers or politicians whose aim will always be to earn money for themselves. The difference between the estimated cost to conduct the CWG and the now actually incurred cost will be the eye opener to our general public whose money have been misappropriated in the just ended CWG. Thanks for the referral Ms. Disha Roy.

The strong second place finish in the CWG does pave the way for India to build sustainable steps to become a global sporting power. However, it is a long road ahead and we should not be complacent that it can be achieved easily due to the following factors - 1. Many world champion athletes skipped the CWG. Hence, the true benchmark comparison of a good athlete was missing and the achievement of a gold may not be a true reflector of the highest possible achievement. 2. CWG is restricted only to the CWG nations. This implies other nations that may have better athletes cannot take part in the games, thereby lessening the competitive focus from other athletes. 3. The benchmark standards for a CWG gold versus an Olympic or a World champion gold is quite different and it takes a whole lot of effort to be a world champion. 4. CWG is a regional sporting event as compared to other global events. This also again implies that the competition is correspondingly lessened. 5. The strong second place finish came about on account of the last gasp effort by Saina Nehwal to bag the gold as the individual singles title champion in Badminton. 6. The CWG was hosted in India thereby giving us a first mover advantage as the host on account of the familiarity with the venue and other factors. Despite all these factors, the successful second place finish in the CWG has highlighted to the world and also our past colonial rulers; the British that India is on the threshold of a major revolution in sports. The successful finish will also highlight the achievements of the athletes in various sports other than Cricket, which is almost like a religion in India. Diversity in sports helps to build sporting skills among the athletes and the Government should encourage the development of different sports apart from Cricket. Keeping this backdrop in mind, we could safely assume that we are on the way to becoming a good sports power provided adequate government support is available for different types of sports and sustainable momentum is generated to sustain a similar level of competitiveness for the future. We only need to look at China to see how much more we need to work if we need to become a global sports power.... Thanks for the referral, Disha....

The second place in the medal rally, indicates that our, sportsman showed keen interest in Sports activities. If we ignite these spirit, still further, will show them success in the future attempts in Olympics. No doubt, the medal that they earned, now , will indirectly motivate them to acquire many more & to sustain it in the field where they out-did others. It can vie for supremacy, if all the facility for training & motivation is kept atop of all the agenda.

First Of All I salute our sportspersons Who participated & won Many medals in CWG for our Country INDIA.2010 Commonwealth Games India has once again proved that it has the right stuff to come from behind and shine against all odds. Starting there were signs of disappointment that the games may be delayed or moved to another country, but the central government to the matter in its own hands and turned around the situation. The athletes did their part to outshine and proved they are ready for the Olympics. India has taken its place in the world order and showed to its cowardly neighbor that good things happen if people are happy in their lives and free to make choices. A spirit of patriotism is born and everyone is a winner.I am Sure Common Wealth Games really make INDIA a global sporting Power.

CWG sucess , Yes we hv improved on our sporting front. But still not global sporting power. Just look the medal tally of the Asian Games. Compare China & India..Where are we ?? Being an emerging super power with world's second largest population, is this enough..

Hello Mr. Raghavan, i appreciate your response with the fact stating that it is the govt/officials who is actually not backing up the guys or taking undue advantage of the added facilities in Asian games 2010 as they have done in India during CWG Delhi 2010, but does that mean we should stop backing up our guys or motivating them as the govt officials r not doing their job. Its not a single man's job. Finally we have got One CWG..y not plan for the next one soon..may be one more Abhinav Bindra..or Gagan Narang..or Sania Nehwal....is nurturing somewhere in india may be in our own houses... I admire your suggestion that its time to take decision by the govt. like cutting their pay or a grade cancellation. They have to think professional....think before the time runs short... - Jatin Rawal(jatin_rawal1421(at)yahoo.com) "Practice professionally, so as to wins the race - Jatin Rawal"

Absolutely not ! a strong 2nd place behind depleted teams shorn of all star power doesnt make one a global sporting power. If so we have been topping the list at the SAF games for ever but we are far from a sporting nation. Even if my detractors were to bury me alive for saying this, there is an element of truth in it - how many new CG or World records did we set on the way to the gold medal. None ! which proves that winning gold medals doesnt make a nation powerful - it depends uppon the conditions in which you win one.

Disha, Just try Imagining, if the same amount was spent in constructing a brand new town only for sports facilities how many more medals could we hope for in the next competitions. If nothing you had a hope for first slot the next time. Also if we could lease to countries lacking sporting facilities for competitions and generate money for upkeep. Drawing satisfaction that too per force is never a good situation. Medals are no justification for wasted money. Possibilities may be immense we lack straightforward decision makers it so appears.

First of all we should think does we need such type of extravagant events? It displaced 3lakh poor persons, The government spending is uncountable. The government's report varies time to time from only 167 crore to whopping 77 thousand crore. All the structures which was constructed for CWG are now abandoned or given to rich, aristocratic people for their recreation. Who says it helped India to present herself as global sporting power, dont you see the IPL games, Cricket fixings, Drug abuses of sports persons. There is an estimation that in india there are 3million shuttle players but only it produces saina nehewal?????????????

No since other sports in our country does not enjoy the luxury and status cricket has got. Only if the government take initiatives to encourage other sports providing all the facilities which other european countries provide to their athletes then we can emerge as a global sporting power.

Lets do something similar at the world level and then we might get the status of a sports power. Its early days...we did not compete with the best and hence cannot be grouped in the best !!! We are a power in the cricketing world, having retained our test no 1 ranking by drubbing the Aussies flat out...now thats what I am talking about :-)
