Indian automobile industry will be seeing a lot of change in coming days, with cars getting customized at affordable prices, where former Maruti Suzuki MD Jagdish Khattar owned Carnation Auto will be entering into a partnership with ace auto designer, Dilip Chhabria to re-done cars at affordable prices. Below you can see one of the Tata nano with the design kits.

Carnation Auto, will start selling customising car kits made by Chhabria’s DC Design at the price of up to Rs 80,000 for Tata Nano, for Maruti Suzuki it will be priced between Rs 45,000 to Rs 60,000 and between Rs 60,000 to Rs 75,000 for the Honda City. While Toyota Innova with changed interiors and entertainment features will cost Rs 4.95 lakh and will carry enhanced interactive features targetting young India.

Do you think this concept, in a way can Customisation business take off in India?

Though Carnation Auto is banking on growth on a niche segment of custom designed market which is new to India. There are so many customers who can afford only for a small car because of the initial cost but would like to go for a image changeover for being different - this is the segment which redesign will play a major role. It will give more options for a customer rather than the existing concept of going to high priced luxury cars for the look and feel

Custom shops are popular in the West and are targeted towards an exquisite segment. In India this won't take off well in the immediate future due to cost constraints and moreover it will be hard to convince a majority of the Indian buyers to go for custom built cars since it won't sit well the their mind set as there are very few overall, who take driving as a hobby and passion unlike the West.

DC usually was into customisation of cars; budget of which would range from 2.5 lacs to crores. This was only for the elite class. Also on the other hand 70- 80 % of all cars buyers ( all classes included) opt for various customisations ( e.g. - music system, seat covers, spoilers & other gizmos). On an average a customer buying a small car would spend approx - 10,000 Rs onwards on his car. & the figure increses with the segment. This is a huge market  that CARNATION is trying to organise & tap.

Carnation will be a multibrand sales & service facility. Collaboration with DC will add value to service & provide an edge over normal service. customers could get consultations from DC on how to personalise their car & design accordingly. It might prove out ot be a WIN-WIN situation for both.

If you have a look at the Indian consumer psychology,it was always in search of new innovative ideas and styles but the only thing which they ask is afford ability. We are a nation with one of the highest density of population. So if we offer good package at an affordable price then i am sure you are going to hit a very high deal with the indian customers.Indian consumers are one of the youngest consumer segment in the world. And youngsters are always ready to accept new things. You only have to hit the right taste at a affordable price.Hope this venture will do wonders in the fure.

All the very bes to everybody associated with this project.

Since there is a huge demand for automobile industry in India, this concept will really takeoff the Customisation business to greater heights. Usually people in india prefer for cheap and the best, so this idea of redesigning the cars at affordable prices will have a great impact on the car owners.

Yes it could be a profitable business plan. Customer range will be crazy persons no serious customer will do this. I am having a strong doubt on testing & evaluation of these redesign cars if any testing/validation is required. Whether Government will approve this if any safety concerns is there?

I mean it is great that something like this we are seeing happening in a big way, there was always DC which was doing all kinds of crazy customization based upon the customer requirement, and now with former MD of Maruti suzuki who gave the country the first affordable car partnering is a good news, and with this we will see new designs and customisation getting more popular in India, and this will be a hit with youngsters according to me, who would like to turn few heads when they are on the road, and this customisation is a very big industry in west, but would like to wait and see how things turnout in India.

India is a place where generally people buy a car for a need and to some extent a luxury.People who goes for a particular brand for example a luxury brand chooses the car for its original looks.

A majority of such people would like to keep their car in original condition rather than go for a body modification.

It has also been observed that cars whose body shell has been modified are more prone to squeaks and rattles than those which are not. For car lovers its definitely an irritation.

So what i observe after considering habits and tendencies of car users in general is that the market for redesigning is definitely going to be marginal as in India the percentage of people going for yanky and punky looking car is a rarity.
