The Delhi High Court (HC) has introduced the first e-courtroom in India. This is also an eco-friendly move by the HC to replace paper files with a sleek LCD screen and a touch screen handbook. Many paper files in the court of Justice S Ravindra Bhatt have now been digitalised and judges can directly access them on a display monitor. The court aims to digitalise all the documents within a couple of years and the pilot project went on smoothly on day one.

On the first day, 33 cases were listed in which around 18 were disposed of within the first two hours, which would have normally taken the whole day. The LCD touch screen was used by the judge to make corrections and certified the copy using his digital signature. Currently, the court has digitalised around 5.5 crore papers pertaining to various cases up to 2007. It is also considering recording the statement of witnesses through video-conferencing to avoid procedural delays. Even the lawyers were happy about this new initiative, because the proceedings were conducted without any technical issues and the process was simpler.

Do you think this move will help in increasing the speed of legal service in India?

Of course yes! It will speed up legal process and will reduce paper work.  Though there may be some problems yet, results would be far more better than now.I think it should be done for all other courts too.

Even if government allows it in all the courts across the country but still, there are so many cases pending that I don't think e-court will be enough for all of them. Also, we don't have so many skilled personnel to work on these platforms. So, I don't think this concept of e-court will be of any success...,

This is positive and progressive!!

The government is for sure not sleeping on their feet any more. I agree with what Mr. Kandadai has commented. I think it has to be taken in the same spirit. Thanks for the referral Tarun :)

Digitization of court records can speed up retrieval of records and public access to relevant details. Recorded Video-Conferencing will add to the quality of proofs in trials while speeding up hearing process,

While this definitely will not solve the pendancy of cases - it did take many years of inefficiency to create this back log - it is most certainly a step in the right direction. The other means of speediong up disposal is to monitor the judge's performance and speed up the process of trial. These will take some time as the method needs to be carefully studied to and implemented step by step to avoid miscarriage of justice in the interest of innovation and speed.

There is another angle to the whol;e thing. Monitoring the performance of each and every court will become much easier for the portfolio (high court) judges - judges who are in charge of specific sub-ordinate courts as the data will be readily available.

This last frontier of involvement by IT is long over due.

I truly appreciate this initiative and believe we have all the required technology and man power to convert the whole legal process and make it much easier and accessible to common people. May be the larger population staying in villages will not be comfortable with this change but the fast process will definitely get appreciated. The current legal system is horrible and people are just afraid of going for help to the court as court will become the worst enemy of their life. This process will also help us to get rid of our bulky files. Now we have to carry only a USB device or CD of our case, which is much easier. We can now speed up all pending cases last decades. This move should reach all high courts and after that distirct courts also..

I support Aarti coz there end no. of senior advocates who cant even switch on their pc's, its a gud move but we have to learn first, for youngsters it is a good thing so that their seniors would give them some respect, to me i dont feel so gud b'coz systems get crashed, window co9rrupts, cd's media may be erased, the conventional method should not go..... it should stay as well....
