Are these same sides of a coin or two different sides of the same coin? I was inspired to debate about this with all of you here purely on the basis of Manish's insight on 7 questions to find your passion! Great insight but I felt a little insufficient in its content because passion has been represented only in a very positive way whereas Passion has two most powerful emotions involved... LOVE & HATE!! Both these are reproduced PASSIONATELY! The reason to put a speed breaker in this thought process is because there is also a DEDICATION! It means; "A devoting or setting aside for any particular purpose"... When you have a word called purpose then you have a whole new UNIVERSE that opens to you!! A sense of purpose would essentially mean a result to be achieved and so it definitely purports to the fact that you NEED to be PASSIONATE about the means to achieve the result and hence the purpose fulfillment!! Now, please come forth and try to decipher this tactical difference on this forum! If you are true to to yourself you will find your purpose and your passion and will know the reason for your dedication!!

Passion is zeal, enthusiasm, obsession infatuation, excitement craze, etc

Dedication is devotion, commitment, loyalty etc.

No two words in English have the same meaning, the beauty lies how one uses them.

If one is dedicated chances are one may fall sick and tired, can get distracted, may like to skip it, or postpone.

When one is in passionate about his work thought activity he she connects seamlessly to an infinite energy source, hunger sleep etc. vanish, some kind of trance situation.

Passion or getting passionate is the ability to seamlessly connect to an infinite energy that has created us, however we are finite.

It’s one’s ability how he she uses his / her passion to create run get fulfil his her needs wants & fantasy. For own self for family society region country or go global.

I don’t understand passion, how can I use it? Well how many of you understand electricity? The way Volta, Ampere, Galvani did?  We use it every day? Don’t we?

Since passion is energy we can use it like electricity, to “cook a man’s food” and or “cook the man”!! Passion can be used to love and hate, you can generate it switch it off or on.

We can create a Taj Mahal (Passion) in 20 years(dedication) or 60 hours of intense, engaging gun battle in Taj Hotel (Mumbai) pushing up TRP of all major channel, challenging men in uniform to become fediyan a  martyr .

We are not born in the best of best society we can definitely do something to make it better.

Again we are getting into the realm of perception, judgment, good, bad, ego supremacy.

Passion well channelized (dedication) in a person is a genius a hero a villain (Hitler, he spoke of German blue blood, nothing wrong or right had he kept it to himself, what he did with his understanding of his countrymen destroyed his country and he himself had to put a bullet in his head).

In the same period Einstein a Jew who migrated to USA was unknown till his late 30’s became famous for his General theory of relativity. They are particles that move faster than light, but does not crash the theory instead extend our understanding of the Universe and how it operates .

Passion relates to hobbies and interests like 'passion for sports car', 'passion for painting' etc. Dedication refers to the sincerity and honesty against a specific job alloted to you even though you are not interested on it but have to do it for the sack of professionalism.

According to me its the passion that comes first leading on to dedication. In simpler words, you need passion to go after something and then dedication to sustain your pursuit. To understand this further, we can get inspired by the Tom Hanks movie where he is chased throughout. The police chief had the passion to catch him and the dedication to continue his pursuit looking for clues and learning from each mistake where he missed catching Hanks. Its actually a catch 22 situation here. Having the passion doesnt necessarily mean you have the dedication or vice versa. I feel it differs from person to person and is situational !

..Further to what i have said...i feel without dedication one can'f follow one's passion...and as Mr Satwinder has rightly said...it all starts with trust-respect-liking and it has a cause..a reason to be dedicated to something..someone...while i feel passion to be of some higher degree..and perhaps involves a greater relationship with the heart..and requires a greater degree of freedom..and might have few more hurdles in its way... i like what someone has said..."whats life without a little passion"--over to you Makrand sir..

Inderpalji I am passionate about the complexities of human psyche and dedicated to finding more about them!! Does that answer part of your question which really wasnt there?? :)) But you see the idea here is that people should look at themselves and answer this or debate this in the appropriate column! This debate is all about self involvement in terms of making other people here understand the reason where you stand and why you stand!! Thanks for being here as always!

Srinivas, Welcome!! Dedication does not necessarily mean that you dont like the thing you are dedicated to!! But Passion also on the same side does not necessarily mean genuine liking!! If I passionately HATE politics as a subject or because of the politicians... I HATE it PASSIONATELY!!! But I have a passion for writing but dont always like to write!! What I am trying to find here is the fact that if you are where you are would you dedicate it to your passion or would you have rather dedicated your interest elsewhere where you would have passionately gotten better results??? Thank you for adding your valuable inputs :))

Thanks, Makarand for the referral. Another one from you that makes me put on various thinking hats to give one small answer. I guess you are passionate about such debates :)

Passion leads to dedication.

If I am passionate about something, the passion in me is going to drive me to spend more time on the subject thus over time making me dedicated to the job I am pursuing.

I could extrapolate the same to a hobby for example. A hobby (different from an interest) is something a person is passionate about and thereby tends to spend more and more free time on the hobby. This later leads to dedication for the same.

I just like to reproduce the opinion of one miss Linda.  I believe she aptly said so I would like to reproduce the same.

In her opinion

" You don't need to necessarily enjoy what you're dedicated to. You could be dedicated to getting good grades, but that doesn't mean you have a passion for studying or learning.

Passion, on the other hand, is something that you like, even though you don't have to do it. It's something you enjoy and feel strongly about, and feel very happy and relaxed while doing it. It's more like a hobby. Like you can have a passion for writing"

I love to thank Miss Linda for this beautiful description.

Actually, Passionate & Dedicated both word are co-related with each other. If one will exist, the other will automatically will come. The important thing is here " INTEREST" which will hold the hand of both passionate & dedicated. Interest is staying between its. If any person are working with his/her passion, he/she must be interested and he/she will be dedicate his all energy in that. Thanks sir for nice debate.

I would urge you to participate with a lot of passion to what you have done and achieved. Just being passionate is like love with no responsibility, passion with love or hate............passion with love and dedication will give good results not only for one person where as it inspires everybody for good. Passionate with hate rate and dedication results in disaster..........no good for anybody.... the best two examples,i can give is Hitler and Gandhi............Gandhi became mahatma by his peaceful moment and spread the love with dedication the passion for him to get independence with minimum loss of life...........today ,we r living in democratic country.........the sacrifice given by so many great souls............so many were their it’s only mahatma who understood and first implemented on him then asked people to follow him, this is total dedication............... When we talk about Hitler, he also fought for his country with passion filled with hate rate towards Jews. He opted war became devil in example; whose orders took so many innocent people life.........this is brutal murder............ Passion with love and dedication brought freedom for countries inspired by Gandhi ........doing good with good thinking is always good.........it’s human otherwise its devil........... Passion and dedication and love are like one is connected to other, if these three work individually or independently with different option, the result is haphazard.

Dear Makrand,

Thanks for raising a nice topic and invite. Passion bears both positive and negative content for "self" in most cases and for others at lesser times.

Dedication in contrast seldom has self in forefront and does not include negative emotions at all.... to best of my understanding dedication is more of positive a quality.

Welcome Jaygopal :) " Its actually a catch 22 situation here..." It most certainly is! This is something I want to understand in human psyche! Is it the glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel that you see which makes you passionate about the light or is it the dedication that you will see light at the end of the tunnel that makes you passionate??? Two tracks, implying the same but never meeting!! Most crime series that you see would always tell you that the force is dedicated to getting justice done! But when it comes to that one person avoiding it, it becomes a passion!! I want to understand this aspect! Thanks once again for being here :)

Well said Ujval!! Welcome back :) The difference between these two most commonly used words is that that they seem to be implying the same meaning, but in essence they are parallel tracks seeming to meet but never do!! My understanding stems from the fact that Passion applies to very materialistic things in life whereas dedication is more subliminal. Dedication requires one single rule... HONESTY! Passion epitomises craziness, mad hunger and tremendous excitement.. all of which could be the basis of a disaster or astounding success. You have to first understand where you are and how have you reached where you have to find out whether you are dedicated to it or passionate about it! Thanks once again brother :)

"No two words in English have the same meaning, the beauty lies how one uses them..." Thanks Joydeep for this statement!! You see the beauty lies in the fact that you need to internally (self) realise what you are doing. If you understand that, the passion / dedication will follow. WHat I am meaning to find out is that if you have reached where you have is it passion or dedication?? Thanks a lot for being here Joydeep :)

Now for my participation!! Dedication as rightly said by Satwinder here is all of what he mentions and more... When you dedicate something or someone or yourself to a task, hobby or work you are actually going at it with all your heart and TRUE feelings about the purpose that you have resolved to achieve!! Dedication solves issues of concentration and the honesty with which you attack a job or task. It also sends a message to people about your love or respect towards your task! You need to understand here that we are not talking about dedication as in dedicating a song or nominating someone, we are talking about your own true and right feelings towards the job at hand. I vote for dedication because dedication has the positivity, honesty and the approach set to the purpose. Passion on the other hand has two sides to it!You love with passion and hate with passion too!! So much so that it can be even called OBSESSIVE!! These lead to such emotions which would eventually lead you to right a wrong or wrong a right! More often its the second story because passion lacks the use of mind, it uses the heart as its vehicle!! Over to you gentlemen!

I am so sorry that I did miss your debate but unfortunately Akshay I was not very active at all on toostep as i had DEDICATED myself elsewhere!! But I am truly sorry for not being able to participate!! Passion and Dedication are both heartfelt actions. Dedication is for belief in something and hence given to with a purpose in mind! Purpose ... thats where the dark side of dedication lies! If a result needs to be achieved there has to be a purpose for it! Passion on the other hand has two sides to it.. LOVE & HATE!! But in both these actions the efforts, the determination and the self involvement is MAX!! So where lies the difference?? Thanks for being here Akshay as always :))

Wish that the debate could as presented in this format:-

http://toostep.com/debate/fortunate-versus-lucky

Anyhow, there is a subtle line of differentiation here. Passionate seems to be involved emotionally and instinctively to a particular mission or goal with strong belief, so it is steadfast without essentially any additional desires out of that.It is a self governed proclivity without much external influences.

Dedication follows more of a mental attitude towards a task, activity or process without much of emotional overtones.Dedication relies on skills and may be inspired or modified by external influences.

Thanks Satwinder!! You have taken the easier way out! This debate has a purpose. The purpose is to find the real demon in you. Will dedication get you to your result or will passion??? Its really an acid test to understand your own platform and where you stand on it. Have you reached there where you are because you want to (passionate)? Or you have reached there because you have been true to what you do (dedication)? Tricky, yes ... But very very self involving! Thanks for being here as always my friend.
