I have seen with lot of companies..they do invest on testing. BUt when it comes to taking big decisions based on resullts provided by test team..they will try to make them silent
It looks like unsaid,un-official understanding between different stakeholders
This situation poses a question..Do companies really understand the importance of testing and QA..or its just a formality to show that they have a tendency for improvement
Interesting debate, What you said is true but years ago, when customers were not aware of the technology and the current trend. But today companies cannot fool the customers they about the product before they buy it. So companies have stared giving importance to the testing process.
It really matters a lot to test an object before it is delivered. Even we do it in our personal life. Then how come a company release any product in this competetive market without testing it properly..After all every company want to exsits in the competetion. By

it all depends on the budget and the requirements of client. If client want a robust and reliable software and ready to pay for it,then company do not have any problem, but with the lack of budget company tend to focus on quick development of the software.
Despite being from the species across the other side of fence, I do agree with suleman that when it comes to releasing the product, many times the observations are swept under the carpet which proove to be the bane for the support and maintenance staff.
However i want to add as well that now things are changing for good and companies too are taking the testing seriously than before because in this volatile market, no one can afford to take risk on their goodwill.
Let me put it this way...SOFTWARE TESTING and most of the testing in other industries is a necessary EVIL ..i mean i have seen aircraft testing- fatigue testing, avionics testing, during my days in NAL ....and some of my friends in DRDO...have witnessed weapons testing....all involve a huge amount of money, time and at times also leads to frustration...but... without testing, imagine a missile hitting a wrong target ....like it happened in Serbia, or health monitoring systems going berserk. ...
In fact the origin of software testing has military roots , mankind’s most notorious and costliest scientific project “ STAR WARS” program. Pentagon called it the SDI a pet project of Ronald Regan during the cold war era....witnessed a lot of failures and anomalous behavior in automated systems causing unpredictable behavior which became the genesis of what is today known as software testing....yes the corporate culture under a pure commercial regime has made software testing a joke .....i think these corporate companies ...need to visit POKHRAN ...or better still WHITE SANDS test facility. ZERO TOLERANCE WITH ZERO ERROR is the mantra for the testing industry specially for those that deal in areas related to nuclear(chemical/pharma) , aerospace, and medicine where the stakes are too high to cause death.
And by the way today’s commercial airliners like the fly-by-wire B-777,787 or A380 is nothing but a huge flying computer for eg : the b-2 stealth aircraft is an inherently unstable aircraft it has(needs) 136 on-board computers to keep it stable and functional in air. Poor B-2 needs dialysis through out it’s flight cycle.
So watch out the next time you book a flight …you may be sitting on a huge computer in the form of an ! AEROPLANE ! I always fear traveling by these automated aircrafts in fact when ever I travel in an A320 I am a bit skeptical than when I travel in a B737 as it is a tad bit less automated .
Need I say …any thing more …..on testing ..sure I CAN !

I think companies do completely understand about the importance of the qa/testing cycle or effort in the Software Development Life cycle. Else they would not be interested in spending money in keeping a testing team! A validated product would give a confidence boost up to the sales team. Moreover we can also measure what all company will miss by skipping QA i.e. the specific value add to the product by the testing team.
Today clients are very smart you cannot sell them shit otherwise they will sue you and that will sue your reputation in market. Every company wants to see its clients happy because otherwise they will be sad themselves ;). and if you want to see your clients happy you need to find the bug before the clients.
Also different methodologies of testing make sure that your application is not only satisfying the clients with the functionality but improves he overall experience of the client.
But I think everybody preffer to maintain there quality..for booming in the market. If a company mada a software and doesnt test it..then its of no use..and if implemented as it is...it will be tedious work for support and maintainance engineers.
Every one is thief till they are caught..when Satyam scandal happened Narayan Murthy was the first to talk about ethics..and now we can see ethics of infosys
Though men say in various forums..we support women to come on the top.. But really the concept has not entered deep in the hearts..though the situation is much better with newer generation..but still India lacks a way behind the world
