Anyone who believes to run the Rat-race at whatever cost will need to shed the most on ethics. The dilemma is not limited to marketing alone it is as much applicable in all other segments and individuals. Personally to me I consider them important and a differentiating factor from various other species, so follow them, yet one has to be ready for the harder grind following this path. Simple thinking...... allow Rats to run their race.

The question could have been framed as to whether we should follow ethics in marketing rather than do we follow the same? That is because an empirical study only can prove the position on it. So let us analyse the success stories and the brands that have remained time tested, can anyone say they are so because there was no ethics or no moral values. Let us not use a broad brush to paint such a sensitive issue and make it blurred.Once Sh .Shunu Sen acknowledged in the A&M periodical magazine the clear distinction between negative and positive advertising. That was based on the values which happen to be universal. Assuming your target audience or the segment you want to appeal to consists of inmates of prison and cheats even they will not buy your product and the strategy if it is found deficient in the credibility of the message.

Do we teach MORAL VALUES in marketing management? I havent learnt it. As far as I know moral values used to be taught by parents or teachers or in moral science. ETHICS, this is something very personal and no amount of teaching can inculcate in you, COME TO MARKETING, of course the tools and techniques to know the customer identify the needs and wants and satisfy the customer is the teaching of marketing and these also are just the tools and when it comes to actual practice not all tools are used. Some are used, some not, some modified-ACCORDING TO THE SITUATION. So as per me there is no dichotomy in teachings and actual practice

"SMS" was and could be a main marketing tool if it will not used for making customer annoyed by sending irrelevant and unnecessary message to not targeted community. what is happening since couple of years. i think this is the main reason customer/people are not like to even peep into these SMSs but still market is using this as cost benefit and mass scale dissemination tool.

The current education system is too process driven and the fact that human being are being taught by human beings takes a backseat. The ethics and morals are completely forgotten along with the value system. It seems that it has become fashionable to adopt everything that is western and english at the cost o our own. It miuht sound boring an cliched but the ethics morals and value system are very deeply intertwined with the tradition.Since Indians especially Hindus are the only race on this earth which who have a serious ineriority complex about themselves we allow ourselves and our wards to simply copy. The emphasis should be on modernism and not westernism. The people who established the department of Sanskrit and Indic studies at Harvard are modern that philosophy is to be copied. Tagore was modern while being completely India. The verses of Bacchan are modern being in Hindi they also teach us the perspective of ethics, tradition and philosophy. Our education system is simply copyig from western stylization which is not essentially bad but the quality and content is poor. The dropping standards at the technological institutes the quality of dissertation and the attitude of our youngsters is a case in point.

Yes. I think we do follow ethics in business and life generally. There are always examples to the contrary. And yes profits at any cost is alwys expected from every employee. But does one really have to compromise and go by what is expected to be done? Some of the most successful & respected organisations i have sen are also the most ethical. Yes businesses do cheat customers, but these dont survive for very long. Sometimes marketers are pressured into presnting non facts as facts. However in my experience marketers will tell you untruth only when they dont understand their own discipline and dont believe in their own product/ service. So it really depends on what values does the marketer hold?

We have all read 'Honesty is best policy'. Truth always triumphs. Hence in the long term organisations with ethics will survive and thrive. I have come across one argument about Tatas not being No1. It may be the case now. But in future Tata will succeed. Some of the so called No ones now will not survive if they do not have a moral foundation. I believe in marketing also if we tell the truth people will accept the product for long than telling exaggerated lies and sell the product once. There are ample examples where quacks selling fake medicine for curing chronic diseases getting caught and becoming bankrupt. Hence if we want to survive long we have act ethically .

hang on guys, i dnt think that there is no ethics in business. "as far as my knowledge is concern if you really want to sustain in long term and if you really want to compete with the giants you have to be liberal, you have to follow ethics and bear all the moral values. now modern approach is that the consumer is aware of everything you really cant help yourself cheating people for long time, they have several options they can switch to next best alternative, so in order to gain a cutting edge and in order to be in there for a long time or say for branding you have to follow the ethics"

Yes we do follow the ethics and moral value that we have learnt in our business school. There are various factors which hindrance to objectives, so many a times we don't recall the values, ethics and principle and simply keep in mind the, short term objectives which attached to it..!!! Going beyond the barriers and keeping in minds the ethics and morals while taking decision on your objective is very important, and practically very few people think about it, and though who thinks on the lines of moral and ethics they succeed in long term goals and sustainability. People who want to be an objective oriented has to think on these lines this will help us to bring change in nature of management. I belongs to retail industry background were you have to perfect eye detailer for every small objectives that we set for the organization, that’s helped us to sustain over long term business, morals and ethics help me lot in my past and I hope we should all think on optimistic lines to religiously follow the same to achieve the sustained and long term objectives.

It’s sad to say that many people don’t. In this world as long as you live you will always have good and bad people, good and bad situations & good and bad relationships. Once you get out of school and into the real world that’s where additional learning, habits & decision making begins. The real world will test your morals & values, and your strengths & weaknesses. Sometimes some people do and some don’t follow good ethical values in the business world or in daily life. Many people don’t because as an adult you have a choice to make your own decisions. The world can be so corrupt. There are many people who DO follow values and ethics that have been taught to do them. But then you have A LOT of the ones that DON‘T. The world is so corrupt and full of bad things & bad people till many people don’t seem to care anymore. When you are in business and trying to up hold a good professional reputation & follow good business practices, having some degree of good morals and values is still needed. Good morals, values and ethics are still needed and more people should practice using them and make it a habit. Many times the good moral values and ethics that we’ve learned don’t stick around. It’s sad to say but that’s the way of the world. It can be true that many times some kids are taught how to behave well and be good people but many times that all gets lost or ignored when you are faced with real world adult situations. It just all depends on the situation & the individual if he or she wants to uphold good morals, ethics and values. ~Business Management Services: You can get business support services & business consulting from The Clerical Business Solutions Company (CBS). Ethics refers to the study of moral principles, or “right and wrong”, therefore marketing ethics is all about marketers doing the “right thing”. Exactly what the right thing is, is not always completely clear-cut since what is “right” may vary depending on whether you are looking at it from the perspective of the company, its customers or the society in which they both exist.Ultimately there is no ethics which is benefitial to the customer rather than the company.

Sadly no- Kudos to you for posting such a query- we only find unhealthy business ethics and competition streaming from very nook and cornor. Gone are days when business communities valued the external conditions prevalent for marketing- natural resources, man-power etc, there is absolutely no ethics in the business-word. its accepted norm to lure the customers and cheat them. Often we blame the government for corruption, how good are the business houses then? are they also not corrupt and manipulative. Both share the blame for unethical practises of management.

Actually there are two parts to this. First is the fact that we do not apply any of these values to our work life because out there it is a rat race with each trying to outsmart the othern whereas on the other hand there is a personal life in which one can apply all these values and still maintain a distinct identity. All this only goes to prove that bookish knowledge though might enhance once intellect it is of no use in the practical world where real life experience is more necesarry.

We may ponder on those ethics and values but we have to train ourselves to the current scenario and adjust ourselves.Lets take an example of giving a gift to an official who has done our work. Indirectly, this could be taken as giving a bribe and many times it could be true because we need the person to keep doing our work hassle free!

To be competitive, ethics is given a go-by. There are very few companies - here or abroad - who have internalized CSR as ethos. In India, one such exception is the Tata group - but that has meant that they are not the biggest group. How many companies are prepared to sacrifice the bottomline for the sake of maintaining ethics like the Tatas? Very few I would say.
