It would have been best if there was no Income Tax. This is a Direct Tax ... but not possible. Why ? -- Govt takes our tax/es for their expenses -- They are to feed poor people with this money - arrange NREGP, Mid-day Meal etc. ( Provisions : if we donate to the Regd. Charities, the amount is exempted ... ! ) -- They are to build infrastructure to be used by the citizen. ( Social benefit ) ............... But even the poor or poorest is Taxed ( Indirect Tax) ... !! When they purchase a Match-box, they pay the Excise Duty ... !! .. .. .. Very cleverly, to bring all more under indirect taxes ( and even the poor) , Central Govt has : ---- Hiked the price of Diesel and Petrol ---- Hiked the Fertiliser prices ( good brains behind ... thanks to FM. The farmers' population to decrease due to more suicides ) --- Hiked Excise to 10 % across the board - all commodities. Now, after writing all these, may one get energy to write "How the I. Tax payers have been made benefitted this yr "? .. .. If others may not survive, we are here to write blogs, at least.

Thanks Esha for referring the topic.
I would second Esha in the view that Indian Taxation System and it's structure has undergone tremendous reforms in recent past. And as I am with a view perfection is a mith thus this strecture is reaching near perfection every year with rationalised tax rates and simplifed laws. The only flwa which could be identified as Amba Prasad has mentioned is the judicious utilization of the kitty thru right channels.
Ujjwal Parallel economy is definitely a concern but trust you me what ever the rate you give for taxation those who are not willing to declare will not. There are seprate reforms which are there to address these issues like AML guidelines, KYC and last but not the least UID in continuation to PAN NO.
We do have diversity across the states in terms of population eligible for direct taxation , total population and scope of operation which needs to be covered by tax kitty etc, so uniformity can not be expected.
And if we talk of officers harressing the business men than my perception is that in parrallel economy investigation can only cause harresssment not happiness.
In my opinion too, we have got one of the best possible taxation system.

Hey Mehul, I think we had problem with Taxation in India, but after implementation of GST you wont have any problem with it. Apart of that IT has rose its limits and it's good as far as pay scales are also increased.

Yes, I think the Indian taxation system has undergone tremendous reforms during the last decade. The tax rates have been rationalized and tax laws have been simplified. India has a well-developed tax structure with clearly demarcated authority between Central and State Governments and local bodies. So our's is far better than other countries........

ABSOLUTELY NOT! All salaried persons (Govt, Semi-Govt & private) are paying comparatively more taxes and enjoying less luxuries and on the other hand, business persons, Big or Small, are paying less taxes whilst enjoying more luxuries. You can see many entrepreneurs paying NO tax but driving expensive cars, residing in expensive houses etc.. Salaried persons pay more tax for being loyal (Everything White on paper!) and other pay less tax (Black Money)

Also, the justice system is a travesty which the government funds so noone can get any redresel in time or functionality. So that route is closed and the government is like implementor of Draconian philosophy on society which is another reason to object to excessive tax gathering.

One more thing I noticed when I came back from US is one need not pay dual taxes. Here in India one pays a lot of indirect taxes much more than the threshold of say 2% on say 2% of items one consumes. The reason this happens is government is frigid and cannot maintain the purchasing power of the citizens income. Paying indirect taxes and personal taxes tantamount to dual taxes which again is unfair.

We have a very unfair tax system, some of the reasons are, 1)Economic science stipulate that when a citizen cannot get the goods he seeks in public domain he uses his funds for private consumption. For example a government hospital funded by the government by the tax payers money cannot be utilized by any health conscious citizen, so he has to go to private hospitals. For everything facilitated by government one has to look for not only alternatives but also one has to find resources for private consumption. 2)Also, the government don't plan employment for newly graduates or those out of work. 3)Relocation costs are basicaly private consumption. 4)Government don't provide efficient environment or welfare for citizen puting them at undue risk of existence and they need private insurance to cover up the risk, the costs of which are prohibitive. These are only few of the major drawbacks of the tax system. Government who cannot represent it's own people should not collect taxes. There is an ols story when Donals Rusmsfels, the emissary of the monarch of England met Jefferson the then leader of the union of America and asked them to pay taxes his reply was "no taxation without representation". The monarchs were unwilling to giver representation to Americans in UK parliament. So citizen here has lots of wovs including poverty and malnutrition which is the job of the representative to eradicate. Once they are unwilling then taxing citizen is unfari and non equitable.

I have a big problem with the tax system in my country(Guyana). We pay taxes on almost everything. Individuals have to pay income tax, property tax, (capital gains tax when selling assets), with holding tax on the interest of your savings in the bank(also pay property tax on your savings if it exceeds a certain amount) and the worst part 16% VAT on most consumer items. Every country will have their own views.

For me its NO. The middle class people paying excess tax very sincierly and top bosses, business people, politicians etc,,,,,,,,, are paying very less. Black money not comming out, it should be relationalized that no body could not hide any type assests or any other form. Let see, Mr Rahul Ghandi having only Rs.2 Crores, what he his family having is belongs to trust and enjoying him self by cheating India. Like this so many people are there in India to come out. the given below web reference is the only one simple example of our taxation system

The current tax system has been derived over several decades based on the tax policies formulated over the years and which have been fine tuned based on the changing market conditions. Given this scenario, the current tax system can be inferred to be fair. However, in comparison with various countries in the world where taxes have been implemented, the Indian system of taxation may be slightly over burdening the masses. Additionally, we need to also focus on the issue of tax policy implementation. You can have an excellent tax policy but if it is not implemented properly, then the system is not fair. Given the current situation, where all the members eligible to pay tax are not fully covered under this system, the tax system implementation is automatically not fair. The situation has improved over the years, but still it has not reached a fair state. The definition of fair implies you address at least more than 95% of the population. As the overall eligible population which needs to be covered under the tax system is very high, it is not easy to reach a very high percentage. You also have tax evaders who are able to get away without being prosecuted. These issues will be remedied once the UID (Unique Identification) project by the government is put in place by Nandan Nilekani and his team. This will lead to the identification of a person easily and he can easily be brought under the tax system. The audit trail can be easily done. Still, tax evaders will be there but you will now be able to reach more than 95% hopefully..... Advanced countries have fair tax systems in place. Even celebrities cannot escape paying tax and can be prosecuted. In advanced countries also you can find tax evaders, but they are very less..... Thus, currently the tax regime is not fair...
