Such a law is very much necessary  the minimum should be linked with the price index, say CPI.

Laws are there, but also flouted at the mercy of the Labour Contractors. A strict implementation should be ensured.

At this point of time, there is no limit of "Highest Payment" of salary, commission, bonus and park etc. in India. A discussion is going on to 'limit' this ( volunterily).

How can we oppose "Minimum Wages" ?

I think it not necessary. The rate of unemployment is directly proportional to the overload of labour cost over productivity. Minimum wage law that forcefully raises the costs of unskilled and inexperienced labour and thereby increases the labour cost, while decreasing the productivity, certainly raises unemployment.

So wages should be based on the skills and experience of a person and the nature of the job....

This will atleast prevent employers from exploiting the people working on hourly wages basis. Typically such workers are the main bread-winners for their families.

We need the laws to stop unjust pratice and slavery of people in the name of efficiency and work. Every indiviual is working in his/her capacity towards the growth of the industry. If the industry find that individual is a liability, certainly the industry will dismiss such guys from its fold. This topic of discussion shows that certain individuals want to follow the olden method of exploitation of employees and the top brass has to enjoy the life and the profession atthe expense of lower section of the industry. There should be equal salary to every employees of onesection rather than the graded salary. This will bring down the cost of production.

Hi,

We should have min. wage in INDIA too. It will help in distinguishing the abilities of individuals and moreover we still have poverty in some parts of INDIA which will help labor class with some fix amount.

Minimum Wages Act should be amended. A contract labour just cannot lead a happy life by earning a very small amount a day. Central Govt.must look into this and should make a common hike in minimum wages and check whether it is followed in all the industries in India.

Of-course this is the only way to ensure that the not so privileged are not exploited. Minimum wage rate is fixed in every country and it should be applied strictly. Unskilled labour forms a huge part of the working community and contributes to our overall economy. In my view even the minimum salary should also be fixed for ones not involved in manual labour such as typewriters, office clerks etc.

YES ,I think minimum wage is a duty for government, Although i am not a indian .after all, not everyone has a comfortable job, we should take care of the weak one.of course ,can also have restrictions on entrepreneurs play a more social responsibility. To bring the joy for labours of social development outcomes. and the minimum wage should also be a safeguard to ordinary workers.

Yes we need minimum wages Act, Particularly in India to avoid exploitation of labours. However the minimum wages should be reasonable. On one side the wage prsecribed should be based on cost of living per day and should be on hourly based and not daily based and on the other side it shloud be based on the work the labour has to perform and the skill of the worker.

For example elecgtrician, plumber, mason etc can be clubbed together as a category and hourly rate may be fixed for a ITI trained or experienced skilled worker at Rs. 20/hr in a Mtero city or Rs. 10/hr in a small town or Rs 5 to 7.5 in a village. If the same is to be oerformed by a semin skilled or unskilled worker under supervision of a skilled person  or owner then it could be 25-30% less. A person with the knowledge of local language / language of the owner for whom he performs work may be given 10% more, since he will be abe to beter comunicate with the owner.

Productive laborers as per definition are the Land owners and the capital owners. All others are non-productive laborers. Ref. Wealth of Nations-Adam Smith.

So fixing a norm like paying only productive laborers will take out all the rest of laborers out of rising wages. So treating unskilled laborer like a skilled labrorer doesn't make sense.

In a country like in India where no innovation by way of r&d from manufacturers occur, having soft skills of management or social sciences cannot be considered as people who should be afforded wages like the innovativive classes.

The bottom line it looks like is bringing more into the consumption pool thus maintaining the growth momentum need not classify anyone as skilled on non skilled in India.

Thanks for the referral Mr.Janaki Ram.

Ok, the salary is according to skill and efficiency and which is for certain categories. If there is no minimum wage scheme, it will lead to exploitation. Hence everything should be balanced to achieve the optimum level which will be beneficial to all employees.

Sorry Janki, I can't support your statement, as we have already a law regarding minimum wages to be paid to an individual.

You are very correct that unskilled labors may increases intial cost, but my dear no one is skillful by birth. It's a process to become skilled from unskilled.

& those who don't want this law are the exploitors only, as they want maximum output after putting less than minimum.

If not India, where else......

A country with a governance, regulation and social fabric, still wants to remain feudal. Where value of human life is minimum and the question weather living or dead looses relevance surely requires a strong working mechanism on this score. However, the truth may be that this tool is more often used by those who require it the least and the one's who requires most is forever not in reach, thanks to excellence in application, care, concern and adherence.

There are various Enactments like the one you have mentioned, these are Acts brought into existance to protect  labourers specially the unorganised labour class. One may feel these Laws will not serve any porpose, but if and when there is a dispute it these Laws that are used. But i feel that these Laws to do keep up with the changing times. Most of these Laws needs to be reviewed and amended to suite the need of the hour.

Definitely Yes, the minimum wages in the act were fixed long long ago it has to be reviewed and revised upwards.  The indian business people are notorious for denying minimum wages.  one comes across companies which dont pay the required pf amounts also.  now the indian people are being exploited by the companies from outside whether it is IT Or BPO and what not.  How come companies post such increase in their profits if they are not exploiting their labour.

It is required but , it is like a double edged knife. Can be used by, both, the employer & the employee. Because, as Mr. Janaki mentioned, a very skilled labour can be compelled to work for minimum wage by an Employer or a unskilled / semi-skilled can demand a minimum wages as put out. So, we need an yard-stick to decree what wages are to be made available for a labour based on some criteria, but not limited to the following:

-Education

- Biometric features(male / female, fat, thin, strong, weak etc)

-Skill set in (based on cert /experience) to be judged at the time of employment.

- Age ( total experience you can say)

- Type of Industry

- Geographical location.

- Demographic features ( industrial background / non-industrial background, socially backward etc)

Certainly, once earning needs to be justified & also to be fullfilled for the service that he , in his opinion, is best delivered. For the present day, their living is to be assured comfortable & worthwhile for the work he does for his earning.

I dont agree my dear friend Janki with you on this. There is already an act in place. On top of that the ever increasing price lines are same for you ,me and every body.

If there is not an minimum wage act how can this person will buy his/their necessery items? Why there is a APL & BPL this is precisely for this purpose.

The Minimum Wages Act is, definitely, required as well as its strict implementation in all Sectors.

Even with this Act. institutions like T.T.D. not to speak of many firms in organised and un-organised sectors have been exploiting the hapless and often illiterate labor and lower rung employees.

Hello Manoj. To my knowledge minimum wage act is already their. Firms should follow the guidelines as per the Labour regulations. Government should also monitor the firms whether they follow the rules.

We need this law, as a reckoner is required to ensure that the minimum due to the labour is met. This is to ensure the organisation and disbursement of the wages is done properly.

With respect to written laws, there are already volumes written in Indian constitution. But they are in effect, only theoratically. What is needed, is ensuring the laws are implemented. There is no such agency that keeps track or is accountable, if the laws are implemented at all. Keeping the record percentage, how many laws are breached, and how much response is given to complaints. As, whenever needed , they are easily twisted by monetary power or good approach within govt. bodies, through some loopholes.
