Organisms acquire one specific gene or a few genes together through genetic modification, without other traits included and within a single generation. However, this technology too is inherently unpredictable and some scientists believe it can produce potentially dangerous results unless better testing methods are developed.

G M crops can contribute to someof the major challenges facing global society,including food security, high price of food,sustainability, alleviation of poverty and hunger, and alsohelp mitigate some of the challenges associated with climate change.

A total of 26.9 million hectares of stacked biotech crops were planted in 2008 compared with 21.8 million H in 2007.

I oppose this, the major concern is potential danger to the environment and possible health risks to humans. And there is a possibility that we may not be able to destroy GM crops once they spread into the environment.

Both conventional and genetically modified plant breeding change the genes of a plant so that a new and better variety is developed.

Conventional plant breeding involves changing the genes of a plant so that a new and better variety is developed. New varieties of plants are bred to suit different climate conditions, improve taste or nutritional value, cope with disease or pests better, or to use water or nutrients more efficiently for example. To conventionally breed a new plant variety two closely related plants are ‘sexually crossed’. The aim is to combine the favorable traits from both parent plants and exclude their unwanted traits in a singular new and better plant variety.

Genetically modified foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise than mutagenesis (mutation breeding) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding; plant breeding, and animal breeding, and somaclonal variation. The key difference is that instead of randomly mixing genes, which occurs as a result of a sexual cross, a specific gene, which is associated with a desirable trait, is selected and inserted directly into the new plant variety. The evolution of plant breeding has been occurring for thousands of years and GM is the latest development. Our ancestors embraced new plant breeding techniques as they emerged and we are the benefactors with a large range of new and improved plant varieties now available to us. GM is one of a suite of breeding tools that future generations can use to help tackle environmental and human health challenges.

Why do we need to destroy GM crops...and why this fear that they will spread into environment..

Nature has all sort of plants..weeds, usefull crops, etc..that does not mean that there are only weeds everywhere or only crops everywhere..nature develops its own ways of control...when a species develops uncontrolled...its natural predators comes into play preventing its spread..so that fear is not right.

Second there is no reported health concerns till date due to GM foods...everyone is only afraid because its unknown thing now..But unless u science is all about experiements with unknown..Can u think of science's progress if we stop everything due to fear of unknown?

Guys..Being one from this field I have one thing to say...Today millions of people are dying out of hunger in Asia and Africa...There first and foremost prioroty is to feed their hunger..To do that we need Increased quantity of food and The Quality aspect comes after it..For whom is the quality if we can not prevent their deaths out of Hunger? India's food production today is abt 215 million MT and at present rate of population growth it needs abt 400 Million MT food grains by 2015. Guys..in 7 years period (2004 to 2011) it has changed from 200 million MT to just 215 million MT and in next 4 yrs we need to make it double...AN IMPOSSIBLE TARGET.. Under these circumstances we cannot increase agri-land, we cannot increase productivity by conventional plant breeding as it takes almost 6-7 yrs to develop a high yielding variety. The only way we have is genetically modify the crop to produce more.. Remember..if we can save people from dying out of hunger...we can solve the quality issue later..Life is priceless and most important.. Yes, Genetically modified crops is really required and it is need of time. Currently India is facing shortage of grains production and we are importing the core food items. As there is uneven rainfall distribution among the country, drought is the result that reduces the crop production. Hence to deal with these productions genetically modified crops would be certainly useful. Genetically modified crops can yield more output compared with conventional breeding and also can survive drought conditions to some extend. Hence more steps should be taken so that more research is undertaken for genetically modified crops and should be taken in by farmers.

We, the population of world, have grown beyond proportions.  Our Eco System is tremendously disturbed due to industrialization and automation.  We have denuded forests, polluted perennial rivers, converted fertile soil into wastelands by burying non-bio-degradable substances, polluted air, and what not.  We live in the era of artificial creation.  We have disturbed ecological balance, and we complain, day in and day out, about the drought, flood, etc.  How do we feed over   a6 billion people on earth.  Obviously, we have to go in for Genetically Modified produces.  In the name of quality, we are undermining nutrients that nature offers, in order to cater to the great mass.  We have no escape but to re-invent our methods to maintain our balance, hitherto the Mother Earth endowed us!

Have you heard about a sort of throny bushes [Karuvelamaram in Tamil] which is not a native plant of India and it has spread all over India and it sucked all the gound water.  But the village farmers cut it and used that for preparing charcoal. Farmers are unware of the potential danger these plant possess.  

Thinking on the same line, there GM crops {rice} which is rich in nuticients, flood/drought resistant, and rich in aroma. The cost wise is relarively cheaper or comparable. This will help feeding millions of mouth during drought.  There has been no tested truth that it is harmfull for human consumption. But one thing its adoptability to tropical weather condition, says agriculturalist, is poor. However this curdle will soon be over come. Then this GM crop will definetly be a boom.

GM foods will help to eradicate poverty. This will help to feed millions of people in future. But modification should be adopted in such a manner it withstand the local climate, withstand and preserve the original taste and bud.  There should not be any commercial interest.  But GM food must be made adoptable to local peasants.

It stands to reap enormous profits from growing GM crops, It's cost is expensive but money is saved on pesticides. It takes a shorter time to produce the desired product, it is precise and there are no unwanted genes.

Why not genetically modify the human consumption instead.

Through a single stroke all problems may get mitigated. 

Humans are one of the many creations of nature. Just because humans are bestowed with brains does it mean we must forever keep working against the nature's creations.

Our conventional methods are based on age-old practices after taking tremendous insights from our vedic knowledge, climatic conditions, soil nature and the fertility of soil. What they need is a support in terms of mechanical implements in tilling, ploughing, winnowing, harvesting, segregation, marketing and other supports, and not otherwise!

Worried that genetic contamination of Nestlé products might just be more widespread than we'd estimated, Greenpeace sent a sample of Nestlé baby food cereal bought in Beijing to an independent laboratory.

It came back testing POSITIVE for genetically-engineered ingredients including stuff that's used as an insecticide.

If Nestlé can do this in China – which has better enforcement of anti-GE laws – we shudder to think what Nestlé might be selling here in India, where anti-GE laws aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

While it's scary, it’s not all hopeless. Giant corporations have buckled under consumer pressure in the past. We can make it happen again.

In less than 24 hours, over 8,000 Nestlé customers like yourself have already written to the company and asked it to go GE-free in India.

Genetic engineering is an excuse by which we try to redeem ourselves from our blunders. We destroy nature by industrialization and try to compensate with genetic engineering. So why we need genetic engineering is because we changed the environment in which the plants normally survive. My point is instead of trying to make the plants to survive in our ever-changing environment by genetic engineering, why can't we provide the environment in which the plants grow normally?

                 Why can't we do agriculture in multi-storied buildings under controlled environments? If we can grow plant tissues in laboratories, why can't we grow plants itself?

 

I say no to GMO... at least for plants.

Yes,we are 6 billion people on earth ,we all need to eat and live.HAs Anything that Man invented on the long run sustained and improved human being,or mother nature?

 Every invention we have done which involves deviation from Nature comes with equal or more disadvantages. Not a single one is advantageous.It is all our selfish thinking for our present suvival only. just as a generation before has done damage which we are trying to assuage by different methods though unsucessfully,This GM also is or more dangerous.

Has anyone analysed the disadvantages of GM items?

They cause humans  allergy to most items,resistance to antibiotics,if they are developed with terminator technology the poor farmers willhave to go back and buy each time( international exploitation starts)etc etc

I request all to read and understand the Disadvantages of GM for Their own General Knowledge (sometimes it may save your life since certain medicines do not act in your body if you are consuming GM foods)

Hi there, 

I dont think GM crops  as these are surely going to cause a drastic effect on the course of evolution. Production of GM crops is a short cut to the evolution process. Over that, the production rights or patents of these modified organisms are  in the hands of few companies which  will make monopoly.
