Turn on the TV today and we see a whole host of reality shows, most of which are some sort of competition or the other be it singing, dancing, or task oriented programs. However most of them have the same ideas, if it is a singing contest you can find a singing contest nearly on all the channels under different names, the same goes with dance programs. Of late the latest trend seems to be to put the contestants in difficult situations such as jungles or far off rural villages and then get them to do tasks.

What are we trying to teach our youth through these programs? Are we trying to say that its fair to say that you have to do anything to get ahead? that we must not trust anyone and rather always watch our back?

Is it fair to create all this controversy for the sake of TRP's ?
Why cant we find something more wholesome on TV that is humorous and fun filled ? Shouldn't Television be a medium of relaxation?

TV is definitely for entertainment and relaxation!! But they are also into BUSINESS!! for them TRP's is business and thats where they get money from sponsored shows!

Reality shows add spice and thrill. The content of such shows is the question. Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass se Tez Hain??? was a good concept albeit copied.. but the Indian format was different than the American one! Fidelity, Family, Relationships is huge in US but in India we still have nuclkear families, relationships mean a lot to us so that is the reason why Sah Ka Saamna was shrouded in controversies!! According to me the content od these shows is very important and channels have a CHANNEL to run with personnel to pay... lets not forget that!!

It would be a pity to spend a lot of hard earned money on Plasmas and 5.1 home theatres and see only the black screen!! :))

I am not against reality shows but the way the Reality shows have been playing out these days has provoked me to start this debate

We already have enough and more tensions in our day to day lives, if the shows were to depict mere camaraderie, and having fun then it would make us more happy and relaxed, we don't need to be paranoid all the time, isn't it better to believe that you are not alone in life and you will always have people to back you up and help you out?

Its better to see a show that teaches us to have fun and relax than a show that is only about competition.

i think watching reality shows is a much better option then watching typical fiction shows... for me reality shows excites me, thrilled me and shocked me when it comes on entertainment scale.. you can not predict the next segment of the reality show... entertainment industry can only provide entertainment to the viewers, what else you want them to add...

Well I would say that it was better if these were two different questions because at times you don't watch things for the purpose of adding value , u just watch it for entertainment. So if u ask in terms of pure entertainment then yes we need reality shows. But at the same time if u ask about value addition then No they don't really add value specially today's reality shows for that matter.

I completely agree with Ms.Dewina. Now a days the shows have completely ignored ethics and moral.. Agree that they are here for business but for 'Media' social responsibility should also be material factor. they just cant do away with it by saying "Its business after all!!"

Well I do agree that at the end of the day every producer is out there to make money..and if by adding lots of drama and spice to the show adds to the TRP of the show, why not??? But here they are missing out on one thing - ethics and moral responsibility towards the society. By always showing fights and quarrels and usage of vulgar language over the screen these shows indirectly influence people in a very bad sense. The people have anyways bought an idiot box and are going to watch whatever you show them. In that case isn't it the responsibility of the producers to come up with a show that not only attracts viewers but also adds value to their lives.

What I believe reality shows are just waste of time. We don't get any benefit by seeing how their lifestyle is. I mean, what will we get by seeing their daily routines ? Neither we are getting any benefit not getting any knowledge. Rather the time we waste in watching these "TIME-WASTE" programmes. We can do other constructive works which can add value to our career....
