If the debate is about "NEED AND LIFE"; I believe even mobile phones are not required. I think that this basically depends on what are our needs and requirements.. I have seen people doing business with crores of turn over every year and having a simple mobile. Also I do see students with iphones.. I mean technology is to please you with luxury. If you need it, you can have it; if you are pleased without it feel free to avoid it!!

why not? by your reasoning if we are smartest being then we don't need anything.we can discard every item we use.it is just a tool to enhance our productivity or for fun.there is no harm in that.use just what you need ,don't use what you don't need.i have used net and read many ebooks on my old nokia6600 tiny screen when there were no iphone, ipad ,ebook reader or 3g.

I have a smartphone and i do find it very useful. The user experience is on a different level compared to basic phones even if you are using some basic functions only. There are thosands of apps available but all of them are not meant for us, use only those apps which are useful to you...

Cannot understanding the need for this debate as anything that makes life more comfortable is always welcome. Of course there are problems caused by smart-phones. Laxity at work and health hazards are just the more glaring hazards, but that is for an individual to monitor. For his own good.

The convergence of various technologies in what are called smartphones allows the user to free himself of the more mundane activities. This allows us to concentrate, hopefully, on better things. Yes, i feel smart phones are a definite assist.

Why not ? When the world has been shrunk due to technology to nano's and further, smart phones are indeed a must have. Besides allowing you to access technology at your finger tips, the speed itself makes a difference between winning and losing in todays world. Not to forget that having a smart phone eliminates the need to have various other devices which you need to access technology.

This question coming from a Senior Technical Associate at Cisco Systems doesn't really feel like the right question :-). Did you just want to create another debate here? It genuinely depends on the person and their surroundings on whether they NEED a Smartphone or NOT. And it's the phone that is called as Smart...nowhere does it say that the person using it is also Smart :-). You can be the dumbest person on the earth using a Smartphone. I NEED a smartphone, maybe someone else doesn't. Someone needs instant access to emails/Google/INFORMATION....for others it's not of much use. Someone Needs to pass time by playing games/watching movies/listening to their personal favorite music, someone else doesn't. Someone needs to use some very useful Apps available on the fly...someone else doesn't do more than just a call on the phone. So you are basically debating about why do you need a CAR to travel in the 21st Century when you can use a Bicycle (check I didn't say a Bullock Cart :-) ). Oh, by the way....I forgot to mention....in case you did not know....you can remain connected with friends without having to spend on SMS/MMS/Phone Call .... Internet (over Wifi) is useful enough :-). It's really you who needs to decide how smart you wanna get. ;-)

The main concern is here that the right use of smartphone. You can use it to check yiur mails ,instant reply. You can read documents edit them whenever you need, send them over internet. When you are getting bored you can listen musiic play video games. The key is "use your smartphone in right way ".

I have not used smart phone yet but :( : Cell phones can typically send and receive text, picture and video messaging. Many cell phones can email, too. Smartphones, though, typically go a step further by syncing with the email server of your personal or corporate provider.

Smartphones are just that. They need to be smart because people aren't. Kids (I use the term loosely) play video sports games because doing the real thing is troublesome. Welcome to Lazyworld. Why get off your ass to do something or find something out for yourself when there's an App that can do it for you. The smartphone companies have convinced people they need the 'business product' to make their mundane lives....well, more mundane.

Depend on who are 'WE'. Like any other business, success of telecom business depends on it volume of business. Volume happens if the service and products are available, accessible and affordable to common man that constitute >80% of current and future mobile customers in this country. The business will succeed only if this area is taken vast user majority is taken care of. As of now most of people in this bracket cannot use high end products and services. What they need is the the services the need can be availed in cheap phones that work in good quality basic networks.

It is not a question of everyone making use of all the facilities in the smartphone. There are people who use all those facilities available in the smartphone and they are eagerly waiting for more applications integrated to the smartphone. That is the reason why phones are coming with added applications and features day by day. Some people use it just to get pride with it, but there are many people who are really in need of it. Smartphones are making their job really easy and saving lot of their precious time. Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. Nichepro Technologies. Bangalore. http://www.nichesuite.com

I do not think that very body needs smart phones. I have seen people carrying such phones even without knowing what functions each feature performs. For many it is just a matter show. I am of the view that one should have a mobile with features which will help to make one's work easier. One should assess one's requirements and have a phone accordingly.

Varun said it well. To each his/her own. As for me, I believe that it is cost-effective to have 2 separate devices: - a phone dedicated to calling and photos (e.g. dual-sim phone for under Rs.5k)
- a notebook/netbook/tablet (e.g. netbook for under Rs.15k)
Anyway, one has to pay extra for a 3G connection - might as well have a USB 3G modem instead to plug into the netbook or ANY computer. :)
