Population density of India is 349 per sqkm when compared with 249/sqkm of UK 139/sqm of China and 31/sqkm of USA. How can we feed this kind of population? It is easier to redicule the Government and the Ministers. I dont think any Government or a Minister will be able to solve this problem. It is very sad that people in this country dont want to reduce population, they cant improve productivity of the land but they want to reduce price raise and they want food available to every one. Our preiority is making money and we think money will get everything. Best way to stop increasing price raise is reduce the demand. Demand can be reduced by makinf sincere efforts to reduce population and have healthy eating habits. We need to educate people on healthy eating habits. Percapita consumption of Sugar in Indian States varies from 15 kgs/year to almmost 70 kgs/year. Does this mean that people eating more sugar are healtheir than people eating less sugar ? people in some states eat puree Sheera and in some other puree and vegetable subji. Can any one provide some data on obasity and related health problems and eating habits? can we collect data on hight and weight bodymass Index of people, illness suffered by people (diabetic, hypertension and heart problems) and eating habits (at least monthly consumption of sugar, oil, amount spent on fruits & vegetables) along with population statistics so that we can plan and prepare education materials, decide on price increase through taxation for comodities which are consumed by people more than required. My advise is dont eat too mcuh of sugar, instead eat more of fruits and vegetables and balance your nutrition and micronutrition requirements. This way avoid vitmaine and mineral suppliment and have it in a natural way.

I don't think there is anything wrong in this point at least from consumer's point of view. We are unable to stay without sugar because we are addicted to it. But people who don't take sugar never face any problem whereas, people who are addicted to sugar are more prone to get diabatic. Furthurmore, by taking less sugar, we can save a lot of money in the costly market today as considering a rise of Rs 10 to 15 per kg in sugar prices, the average monthly spending on sugar for a four-member family goes up by Rs 60 to 90. So I don't think there is any other way to check price rise of sugar right at this moment.

Idea of Sharad Powar is good and support it. before passing such coments please study about nutrition, micronutrition and health requirement. Suagr in crystal sugar form is not very essential for your health. I wish you get diabetic and then you will know. I dont mean that you get diabetic by eating sugar. All sugar cane should be converted in to biofuel and we should tax such items whic are not essential to provide nutrition and micronutrition security. At least that way we can raise funds for building health infrastructure and make health facility free in this country. Let people who want to eat sugar, drink alcohol (except fruit and grain based liquors), use tobacco and similar habits, pay for building health infrastructure and for paying health insurance premium of others. I konw in some states people eat sweets like staple foods. They dont know that they can survive and enjoy life without eating that much sugar

Dear Satyavrata Jadeja, I oppose your argument. While I have supported the idea of Namrata and some of the basic reasons why diabetic and hypertension is increasing in India which may look like jokes now, it is true also. I sincerely feel that like in Brazil we should convert most of our sugar cane in to alcohol rather than sugar. You need to reduce consumption of sugar, if not stop altogether. Our carbohydrate calory requirements are easily met through rice, the basic staple food in this country and potato. We need to raise the price through appropriate taxation on all those items which is not very essential like tobacco, alcohol mainly IMFL, sugar and sweets, icecreametc and the like and remove taxation including regulated market cess on fresh essential food items fruits and vegetables and products based on fruits and vegetables sold in domestic market. This way we will make those who want to have these habits / bad habits pay fully for their medical expenses and indirectly help improve micronutrition security. Sharad Pawar is right and we should support this idea.

This is the never changing habit of OUR government!!1and it is utterly ridiculous that we have such people shoulder the responsibility of manning the nation.Fine for people with diabetes cutting down on sugAR consumption would help but what about the children who should have sugar as it is a constant source of energy, if i am not wrong???Oh please it is really necessary to shake these politcians out of their stupid moulds...

I agree with you. But any suggestions from any one? I feel if we are able to bring population growth rate to near zero level in the next 5 or 10 year time from all problems related to scarcity, price riase/inflation raise will get solved but how can we acheive this.

Dear Mr Rao, While mentioning the Population density the Consumption per person, crop yield, cultivation area and production stats are as well relvant. And in any case disincentives for population explosion as well failed from those responsible for Governance.

What else can be expected through self-servicing jugglery, this time with jaggery. Negate all positive efforts to bettering crop pricing and management, encourage imports only for self interests else illogically export, encourage hoarding and retail extortion in name of scarcity. Convert healthy farmlands into ABC zones in name of development exclusively to handle trade, not to improve agri-handling, manufacturing or productivity. Virtual's trading to make real money for SELF. The aim being to ensure highest profit reaching the wheeler dealers and not the farmer or manufacturer.

I didnot say that you get diabetic by eating sugar. Increase in diabetic patients in the country will reduce the demand for sugar. So make it a habit to eat less sugar so that it will not bedifficult for you to control intake of sugar. Please read my coments again. Anhydrous Alcohol is used as an oxygenant in Motor fuels and it is being used currently in India too. Per capita consumption of sugar in India rose from below 10 kg/year to > 25kg/year now and is forecast have a growth rate of 3% oer year. This level may be lower than in Americas and Australia (>45 Kgs) or that of Eurpoe. But then should we follow them in this also. You dont need to eat so much sugar to keep fit (Punjab Consumes nearer 70 kg per capita according to India nfo line research

I dont agree on it Namrata. You know its now a matter of sheer lazyness of the Government. I mean this was the last option anyone could have ever thought of. Eat less Sugar, why? why is it that people take it as a common notion that eating less sugar means no diabetes and a healthy life. No it isnt. I think that the government has run out of legitimate thinkers who can come up with a feasible solution to this problem. Sharad Pawar says to stop price rise, eat less sugar, because he isnt smart enough to come up with a strong idea to reduce inflation. Today he says eat less sugar to curb sugar prices hike, tomorrow Im sure he or someone will say to reduce petrol prices, stop driving vehicels....huh? I guess someone has to take responsibility and arrive at a feasible & reasonable solution to this. You cant sell an egg doesnt mean you kill the hen.

People like Pawar are fit for nothing. He sold sugar and allowed for export at 16.00 per kg in mid 2009 and then he arranged to get the same sugar imported - at 32.00 and what more Pawar owns almost a dozen sugar mills. People like Pawar should be banned from politics - he does not have shame in prostating in front Sena.

Sugar is not an important commodity. Our total expenditure on sugar and food items is comparatively less, around 10 to 12 per cent. The expenditure is on cosmetics, vehicles, fuel, entertainment, hobbies and luxury items but no one says a word on rising prices of these items. Also Sugar is a source of Glocose and medically, less glucose in human body can make him weak as the blood pressure will decrease. If government wants, it can find out lots of other ways to reduce the sugar price. Why they are not promoting Sugar agriculture? Why they are ignoring this big and easiest way of reducing sugar price? If they do this, no necessity of leaving sugar will arise. Merely giving medical reasons as an excuse won't help.
