Firstly, there are both advantages and disadvantages to any technological development. In any technological advancement, be it ancient to the modern times, no information is secure, for the creator's and innovator's at any point of time have the expertise and access to the wealth of raw data in the domain which is being being mined / utilized to manipulate societies. All because of intelligent and faster computing available. In a span of few years there are various communication sites such as google, etc who are providing various services like e-mail, facebook, twitter etc. Besides, nothing comes for free. These are all one of the way's of data collection and also a source of conducting sample surveys. It is really foolish to expect others to secure our private info on facebook!!!The biggest mistake is to put such stuff on the web where it is in a risk to be misused.I have seen people putting wierd stuff on facebook. God knows why they want the world to know what's happening in their life.People go to the extent of putting up status updates that they had a fight with their girlfriend or they have a cold and later on when their stuff is hacked they crib????I fail to understand what is it that they actually dont want the world to know?

For all you Facebookers out there: "What are the differences between Mark Zuckerberg and me? I give private information on corporations to you for free, and I’m a villain. Zuckerberg gives your private information to corporations for money and he’s Man of the Year" - JULIAN ASSANGE

More than 1lakh profile has been hacked by a normal hacker... and you can download all the details of those hacked accounts from www.isohunt.com or any other torrent site.. providing security to the data uploaded on site is the duty of admins.. But sites like facebook do not really care about this..

As of today, the New FB Privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" goes into effect. The new setting shares your data with non-Facebook websites & it is automatically set to "Enabled". Go to Account>Privacy Settings>Apps & Websites>Instant Personalization>edit settings & uncheck "Enable instant personalization on partner web sites ". If your friends don't do this, they will be sharing info about you as well. Please copy and repost.

No. There is a lot of infomation being asked and one share which is there in the respective databases which can be vulnerable at times. Even though the sites claim that they don't misuse the info's provided, but one cannot be very sure. Secondly, One can protect oneself by giving lesser info in chats and avoid accepting requests from unknown.

Anything that floats on the net is bound to be caught by net-savvy men..i call them hackers/ crackers...You may post your happy moments with the intention of sharing them with your friends, but there will always be photo snatchers ready to snatch away your photos and customize them that may either make you a hero/ heroine in the net fraternity or put you in deep trouble. Your activities are not monitored by the net per se but by the ppl who use net for their benefits. If you do not take note of them, be sure you they are waiting for you there to take advantage of your innocence.

NO. Facebook is NOT secure at all. My account - even regular messaging was hacked, and wise comments added seemingly in my name on others posts. It is difficult even to erase personal information once entered. Manually deleted all that I could. Am now deactivating the acount - I am told it will take 14 days - they want to entice you back

Amrita, Not only FB any professional networking site where you put your personal info is not safe however on professional networking site risk is minimal because these strictly professional on sites like FB, Orkut, flopper etc etc these sites are for fun, friendship, dating etc etc so you are at great risk.

Never ever give out your personal information to any social networking sites. CIA is in talks with Viacom who in fact is in touch with youtube to hand over personal information of users and the most dangerous thing is that Humans are to be micro-chipped.Anybody heard of RFID CHIPS (Radio-Frequency Identification Chip)already underway in Mexico.

"Not hacking" but bots. No matter where or what you store on internet places, the bots are gonna read them, they gonna categorize them and sell them to the highest bidder (secretly :)) But, hey the best part is that no human reads them. With billions and trillions ZBs of data being pumped into the net every single minute, it is too much for an individual to keep track of it. So, "no personal info is seen by another person". So, you we can all take some satisfaction in that. But is our personal data "published"? The answer is a big YES! Good question Amrita! Cheers!

Amrita thanks for referral...I am totally agree with Mr. Ramesh sir... Its really impossible practically for any social networking sites to secure your private info.. This is days there are so many hacking tools available to hack any data any where in the world... I think this virtual world is 90% unsafe.. So we need to be aware of this things while using this virtual world...

Yes I agree with Amrita , Even those who see life from the rosiest of spectacles have to admit there are drawbacks to using social networking websites. People can use these sites to prey on the naive and venerable. This can be done in a number of ways including grooming and identity fraud. Although the dangers with using social networking sites are very serious, in my opinion they are somewhere good for our society as long as the correct precautions are taken. However, when it comes down to whether social networking is right for you that is something only you can decide, using your own judgment and past experiences. Before becoming a member of a social networking website do your homework on what they have to offer but also find out about the risks involved.

We must be careful enough before divulging the personal information on the internet. Cyber Crime is rampant everywhere. We must guard ourselves from becoming fall prey. Nothing is secure here.

It is practically impossible for any of these social networking sites to guarantee that your personal data is safe and secure. With amount of hacking hoing on, it is just a matter of time before someone figures out how to break in.

No...I am a bit circumspect here..as with that huge amount of data that Facebook is having at the moment, its a treasure for marketers and brands, they can easily target relevant people here, and if facebook thinks that they can make huge revenue of it then users will be in for a surprise the ad dose that one gets in Facebook from now on, and also the new homepage of theirs is too open, it divulges all the details for unknown person in the homepage itself...thats a bad idea...I am never so sure about the info that we give in internet forget about Social networking sites like facebook, I am even scared to do a online banking transaction for that matter.
