As a boss, it is impossible to be "truly impartial". You have some favourites. The reason for this favouritism should be open and technical. My favourite subordinate can be one who delivers to me quality work every time. It should not be someone who is fromthe same caste/location as me.

Everybody is after all a human being and hence a little bit is required similar to greasing or oiling the vehicles periodically in order to have smooth sailing in work places to avoid unnecessary frictions. However, biased favoritism or more liberal to anybody should not be supported and it would not be a healthy practice in any organizations. Favoritism can be shown if it is on the basis of a common cause which may be of good/benefit to the team as a whole. But there should not be any discrimination in favoritism.

There is nothing wrong in workplace favoritism. We tend to favor colleges who are supportive, understanding, caring, and obedient and so on. But we need to keep a balance while doing so and should not be blind. Only robotic characters can be impartial at workplaces.

I will come to the point directly.. Can anyone tell me that do you like to hear truth about yourself ?? if suppose a boss is doing something wrong and subordinate says that boss it is not correct it should be like this…that time two things can be happened, One if boss is good and he is open to change the way he is working then that point of time his subordinate will become favorite for him but it is very rare case.. And second, if boss takes it on his ego then the life of subordinate will be ruined and he will be no more in boss’ favorite list.. we are human being and if someone do as we like then that person becomes favorite for us whether our way is right or wrong only thing is , he is doing work as we want .. and he becomes favorite which is like a bug for any organization … Favoritism at work place will kill the creativity and develop the buttering skill … everyone start looking how to make boss happy ann.. they will not work for company, they will start working for boss.. If favoritism is because of work, creativity, ideas, etc etc.. Then it is good for company and it will increate the competition in employee to think creative but if it is because of buttering then it should be killed at the time of birth itself.

Nowdays favoritism has become more of nepotism...which is making employees to look out for change. I would say..favoritism should be based on performance not on the other aspects.

Whenever a question like this is posed, I am reminded of what the legendary C K Prahalad was fond of asking his audience: "Is globalization good or bad?" When faced with a binary choice, some will say it is good and others will say it is bad. Here's what made C K the great thinker he was: after listening to a few viewpoints, he would give the answer:"It is a bad question!". Similarly, when you ask a question whether workplace favouritism is good or bad, people are forced to make a binary choice. Instead, if we ask the question "How can we make the workplace better for everyone?" we are likely to get more constructive answers. Favouritism by implication means that the person receiving it does not deserve it. Hence, it cannot be justified under any circumstances. On the other hand, appreciation for a work well done, recognition for exceptional performance that can be seen by anyone, even rewarding great performers - are all legitimate means to make the organization vibrant and for people to be motivated. One caveat though - such recognition needs to be fair and transparent, and more importantly, must be seen to be so.
