Social networking website Facebook has come under severe criticism for its privacy policy from users and tech geeks and here in general most of the social networking sites. Last year, the networking giant had changed its default privacy settings, allowing profile information to be shared on the Net, unless users specifically opted out. In March, it opened up data to third-party websites.

And now they've reached 500 million users milestone, and are on their way to reach a billion people in a year or two so.... Do you think Facebook knows too much about you?

I think they know too much for our comfort, where we studied what we studied, and what our likes and dislikes, and also our online presence, as lately we are seeing too many sites having the option of logging in with facebook accounts it self, and also with the share option that is there, facebook can easily know what one is browsing, So yes, lately social networking sites are knowing too much of information about us...

ofcourse you are the only one who is sharing info n  telling "MARK ZUCKERBURG" about you by adding all such application like family_member, school_frnds, BFF, etc and recently there was a application where all status of previous year which were actually put by you, can be seen,, so you can imagine how much content about you FB is actually having presently... he can write a complete biography on any active person on FB..

Well , ultimately it is you who shares everything . you are responsible for whatever you are sharing with Facebook or any other site for that matter . You type the information and then you click on the "save" option . If you keep this in mind , you'll be safe. For me , all Facebook know is what kind of a mood i am in , what are things i like , what are my dislikes , my friends etc. Your profile o Facebook is just a reflection you create of yourself , whether its true or not depends upon the user .

i agree with Inani.. Our Pvt Info is at stake.. Facebook has immense viewership and hence danger of our info being misused and abused.. also possibility of someone at Facebook using it for commercial purpose or misusing it.. I am really circumspect about it.

I think it makes me uncomfortable that Google 7 Facebook collect and store too much info for my liking. None of live on islands and most of us do not realise how much information we send on the Web, espcially by our day to day routine activities. Who we talk to; whom we correspond with, what we blog; what sites we visit, what we store... Nothing is erased. And we cant do anything about it. That is what bothers me the most.

If you throw the garbage info in their site, they will share the same to others, but if you are so honest to throw the real info about yourself to them they will no doubt share the same to others and probably even make use of them for their own benefit. I mean, its not just with FB, it is the same with other sites where you dump your info in.

The GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) principle follows everywhere in any site you think of. So beware, just dump in what is un-necessary and not what is necessary so that hackers/ crackers/ sharers just dont feel the info good enough to be shared or made use of.

I have opted for NO here in this forum, because the info I dumped is all crap or wait a minute, is it true?? I dont know. To all onlookers, dont waste your time finding out because it is all waste of time and money.

I think it's up to us how much Information we should provide to social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut, etc.... So, I dont think Facebook has too much inofrmation which can be used by other people..

It's not Facebook that can know about us but it is we who are responsible for revealing about us on the Facebook. The utility of Facebook depends on the type of it's users. In the hands of dumb people who love chatting uselessly on the net Facebook becomes a threat to their personal security while intelligent people utilise Facebook to make contacts which help in developing their career or spreading messages for the betterment of society and environment.

I support for no. You can share the information to your connection only or as per your choice by selecting right option from setting.
