Orkut is in discussion with IPL to create brand positioning campaigns and IPL profile page – and bring in advertisers to monetize the socionet.

Even i agree with Sasi's observation that Orkut is more of a hangout stuff rather information gathering. But i will take a neutral stand in this. Because the way Ipl is pushing its presence in networking sites, it could attract a substantial number of eye-balls but yes the time spend on the link or group may be too low.

As far as traffic is concerned, Orkut is no.1 social networking site in India and it would be interesting to see Orkut’s monetization strategy – after all, monetizing social networks is not an easy game.I think  monetization strategy will work.

I agree with you Sasi ,when you are surfing a social network goal clearly defined while performing a search? And that’s why, you will be spending lot more time at a social network site rather than search engine.

That is why advertising in social networks does not work?

I feel that by surfing on orkut chances are that you probably know where to go - which link to click, where to read scraps..in essence, your intention is not ‘exploration’, rather a typical non-search activity and more of ‘hanging out’.
Which means your ‘intentions’ of clicking on an ad may not be very high.

To cut the long story short, you opt-in and choose your social network, while you hop to search engines only when you are seeking information.
