Guy's for last few days we are bebating about whether advertisment in-between programme should be there or not.

Just shift our focus from advertisment to number of TV channels in India. There are over 360 television channels on air in the country and applications for another 160 await the government's nod.Nowhere in the world have television viewers been spoilt with so much choice as in India.

Every genre, be it general entertainment, movies, sports, religion, news, music or kids, has over half a dozen options in every conceivable language.

Is it a recipe for disaster? The unequivocal textbook answer should be, yes. But the facts suggest something else, no channel so far has shut shop, though a great many of them are faced with an unprecedented resource crunch.

What's your opinion?Do you think more than 5oo TV channels will survive in Indian Market?

"if we talk about cable channels or DTH or dish TV 5-7 yrs from now we will see a steep decline the internet will eat up the DTH nd cable tv market.Because if we are walking towards a developed nation the coming youth and working class who hav a highest disposable income will like to see those show which we wish via huge internet potential. So may be they are growing like mushrooms but they will perish accordingly."

When star came isn 2 decades ago it brought with it a lot fo channesl which have survived and grown

Further al 500 channel will be regional wise ie there will many regional channels and if you go by regional channels then they are bound to survive as competition is less a perosn in North will not understan south indain language so he will refer to Hindi ro english channels for news and entertainment and same hold true for south and other regions

Also note the market size has increased TV ha now reached villages and remote areas so the reach is huge

Yes I think they will because majority of these channels falls in the small to medium category. And these are mainly in genres like religion, music, lifestyle and regional including news and entertainment. Low investments make early break-even possible.

Only 12-15 per cent of the total can be termed as 'serious' players both in the news and entertainment genres, industry sources say. These channels require little more time to break even.

I don't think so. Indians are getting busy day-by-day.They don't get time to see so many channels. Specific viewers have their specific interests. But still majority of people watch common channels with serials which I don't think will acceed 20 in number...There is no use of giving so many channels at least in India....
