Manufacturers of plastic carrybags are not happy with the decision of the Union ministry of environment and forests to restrict recycle of plastic material and ban its use for packaging tobacco goods. They argue that plastic is indispensable. But we all know it's cheap and better than paper. Also, food stuffs when packed in plastic have a longer shelf life. Also, recycled plastic costs less. So with all the benefits that plastic has and the way its used extensively do you think there can be a replacement for it?

What is more important for us - Cheap products today or better environment tomorrow?
I strongly feel three things:
1. What is harmful today is harmful always and promoting it will always be harmful.
2. When paper bgs ,jute bags are availabel options why do want to rely on plastic bags alone?
3. We haven't inherited earth from our forefathers , we have rented it from our children and we need to make a a better place to live for them.

So, we need to use alternatives than just looking at the words like "easy" and "cheap"

Hi Isha,I don't think that plastic could be replace by any material.Being cheap and durable,it has more demand.Atleast my friends including me will always go for a plastic as we stay at hostel and cannot afford to carry heavy utensils made up of steel or any other material as well as cannot afford to spend more money.

If a certain item of usage is polluting the environment it should be replaced and instead of plastic we can use Paper Bags and the things which are good for the environment.

In our Calicut city, the plastic carry bags under 30 microns are banned. The govt is also discouraging the use of plastic carry bags and suggesting and promoting paper bags instead.

Plastic is widely use in all kind of fields, if we can change it's chemical bonding it can be easily re use, of course this process is complicated but it can be done.and it take long time but we can clean our environment....

Plastic is being used in wide range of products today. For bags / other house hold products we may switch over more environment friendly products, but when is comes electronic appliances and other similar products which depend on properties of plastic for realiability, safety & cost replacement may be difficult. With innovation in properties of plastic and new facilities coming up for recycling may resolve the problem to a greater extent.

Yes Ms.Isha, but there is no proper substitute for the replacement of plastic while looking at the advantage of it, especially the durability.

Plastic has seeped into the veins of the so called modern common man who knows very little about everything. As is said there are replacements for plastic but that needs strict standards and community excommunication of plastic products and their producers especially carry bags. I try many times to reduce the use of plastic by asking every other person I can but it shows very little effect. Very other time I find them using plastic bags they laugh at me. We need to have a cheaper and more convenient replacement for plastic till then we need to just have to take this plastic pain.

There are a lot of bio-degradable and environmentally friendly materials available. If you are talking about plastic bags - recycled paper bags and cloth bags are an excellent solution. i am a user myself and i have dratically reduced the use of disposable plastic in my life. It is a matter of attitude and commitment. There are plenty of alternatives available.

One thing should we remember always, replacing plastics wont be consumer friendly ... As always we have acknowledged any new eco-friendly concept has always been dumped due to non consumer-friendly features.

Dear Isha, I just want to ask you, what is the basic material used for production of paper bags or jute bags ? It's tree or grass or animal (animal waste). Right? So, cutting tree or grass is more dangerous to environment than using plastic. And in case of animal waste, it is not in our control to produce animal waste. But to use the plastic of larger micron size & to recycle it, is in our hand and we can do it better. And it won't be a wastege & harm to our environment. So till now there is no any better replacement for plastic.

Ethylene plant will go high and dry. What will they do. What we can think of now,  is to reduce use of plastic in normal life. As where it is considered efficient in its services such as food packaging & preservation etc, it can be . Otherwise its' use can be opted out by degradable materials such as Gunny bags, paper bags etc.that goes out & merge in soil. This petroleum by-product is to be refined so that, it need to be re cyclic & degradable.

My own thinking is that plastic bag has no replacement becuase it is durable. whatever u buy if u keep it in paper bag u cannot hold it for long. So even after keepging thisgs in paper bags plastic bag is a must.

Hello Isha,i don't think there is a total replacement for plastic at near future.i think here we are not talking of only carrybags but as Mr.Anees rightly rightly quoted, we are depended on plastic for almost every need and in all fields.only thing against its use is that we don't know how to discard it after use in eco-friendly manner.

• Why we consider Plastic carry bags is the only plastic product. Textile fibers, plastic film, microwavable packaging, Audio-video products, Plumbing pipes, Home Appliances, Toothbrush Bristles, computer and other electronic equipments, Compact discs, eyeglasses, riot shields, security windows, traffic signs and lights, lenses, Mobile phones, Automobile Parts, syringes, IV Fluid bottles ,Heart Valves and Critical Healthcare Equipments are some of the revolutionary and economic products, plastic is offering. Nobody can expect life without these plastic products. Plastic has only one replacement – The another Plastic, which will help to maintain our eco system as it is (Biodegradable).

I don't think that anything in this world can replace plastic bags so soon. All the qualties plastic have couldn't be possibly found in any other stuff. The main thing of worry is not plastic bags itself but the disposability of these plastic bags. If we will try to replace plastic bags with some other material I bet nothing can be better than this. There are some ways to dispose of plastic bags. They can be dumped under the roads half melted with charcol. This way has successfully tested in Punjab.

We are so used to the use f plastic even if we try we cannot replace it. It is difficult to use paper bags for all the purpose and using jute bag or cloth bag is not so convenient. Plastic has got the king position and taking it down from its position is just impossible.
