It is absolutely correct to have a smiling face while sending mails to clients because it shows ur confidence and an assurance which we give to our clients, and even clients know that smile can keep many problems away if used on right conditions

Mostly when dealing with a client, you wouldn't want a cold and curt relationship. Smileys sometimes help to establish 'that personal touch'.

A Client is also a human being and hence science and technology has advanced so much, we have to accept changes as it comes. Earlier, American English was considered slang but now everybody is using American English much more than the British English in terms of words, sentences spellings et al...IA smiley add an extra humor and I do not see any harm to it..:)))

Thanks Amrita 4 invite Yes everybody likes Smiley but it is the matter of individual to take them in to business or not If I am sending mails to a new client, definitely I would not like to send it at all. But if comaratively older client with the fixed business and within the age Group and hierarchy then its quite handy to reduce the distance between two peple. It also depends upon the relationship with your clients as well.If client wants to be serious always nothing is helping out.To keep him for our business we have to leave Smileys out of communictions

It's a,purely, an individual taste & the position he occupies. Say, a supplier running short of a particular item or does not work now etc. Based on the type of communication that he intends to converse with. So that, his point of opinion is made clear and illustrated.

I would agree with you Amrita. It does matter on the relationship. Add to this it also depends on the situation. No matter how good the professional relationship is in case of some hot / serous discussion naturally a smiley may make you perceived as childish. One could be perceived as not understanding the seriousness of the problem and hence could further irritate the recipient.

Its a yes from me.. Im in sales for the last 7 years and been using Smileys of and on in official mail communication. believe me it does help, there is thin line between when to use and when not to, we need to be very careful of that aspect. It gives a personal touch to the busines communication and creates an atmosphere where the customer/opposite party tends to open up with his views or thoughts :)

How appropriate are they is a different question? But, when they are adding some value, there is nothing wrong in using smileys. It has nothing to do with the professionalism, I believe.

Simply put. This will be the height of vandalism of professionalism in the context of business etiquette. Only it will surplus the discipline of a text. Within friends it is okay but not with clients or anyone in that process.

Undoubtedly I would say that there should be no smileys in email messages sent to any client. Even if the client is very close to us, we should not type any unnecessary exclamations or smileys. It is a professional act, let us be professional. Regards, Anna George. Web Analyst. Nichepro Technologies. Bangalore. http://www.nichesuite.com

A client is a "client" bcos we choose to make him so - strictly business! Implying that the relationship is totally professional! Friendship aside, informal communication should be isolated to alone time together, is personal & definitely no cause to put in writing! I have been the face of companies I worked with for 23years, selling to/ entertaining/ visiting, travelling & working with International clients. No matter how good your relations are with any client, written communication is "always" professional/ official - thats what stands out the professional! Am sure there will be a difference of opinion but personal relations stay out of official communication - leave the light hearted communication to the alone time spent, after work hours!

Amrita,it is universal that Good Things are always simple; like -a child’s smile, mother's love to her kids, the fragrance of a rose, taste of clear water.... and so on. Likewise, keep your e-mails as simple as it can be. Enter a special effect where it is actually indicated, - like when you mail to a friend in depression or when making love with someone. There's nothing wrong in a smiley, but it should be used as and when indicated. And good or bad complication in a business-mail/deal may carry a wrong message to your counterpart. Just refrain from complications – keep things simple.

Your client is not paying you to give him/ her orbit-ladden e-smiles. You are paid to deliver the job without delay and efficiently. Clients are not your boy-friends/ girl-friends to win hearts and make up for the mess you created for them. Yes, in some instance (and i mean, in the rarest of instances), when you have built a relationship (not personal) over a period of time, say, 5-10 years, then probably you can pour in all the e-smiles/ smileys (not e-kisses though), but too much of it also could raise eyebrows and get you in trouble. So limit your smileys and instead make them smile with your performance.

No, its not advisable to use it in emails because the communication becomes professional while interacting with the clients. Its advisable to use it while having a chat with friends only.

For me it is not appropriate to send smileys in professional mails, it is a different case when you are or you have some special relations with the recipient, but other ways it is totally not appropriate to send smileys with mails (professional)

I will support no because sending Smiley will be too informal. May be your client's did not like this informal behaviour. We represent our company when we send mails to our client's. So for me it will not be a good idea to send smiley's to any client.
