In India - Definitely yes. For this Govt. need to have focus and sustained effort. Unlike Corruption that is a cancer embedded in the Society which the Govt. alone cannot resolve, Poverty can be eradicated by equitable distribution of national wealth and resources. Unfortunately Govt. in India is unable to do this and many other things it is supposed to do; due to various distractions, few of which are incidental but most are willfully created by irresponsible bureaucrats, power mongering politicians and religious fanatics. It is painful to watch how our parliament work. The only thing that happened smoothly in parliament is the wage increase of parliamentarians. The reason for the Babas and other opportunists rise in this country is because the elected representatives and Government have moved away from people and their problems and needs.

Riya you rightly said that today most of the humanity is so much engrossed in itself, that it is running only after its desires. So right thing is not to say that "it is impossible" to eradicate poverty. "It is possible," but we as an individual, as a society, as the most intellectual species on the earth are NOT WILLING TO ERADICATE POVERTY, out of our own greed and desires - By any means not a quality of the Best Creature on the earth (it degrades us to the levels of non-intelligent, unsocial species on the earth).

Agree with you Mr. Dasgupta that the flow should be from higher to lower. So the same should apply to money also, it should flow from higher income people to lower income people (charity, welfare programs - may be not direct but propel planned ones). Our problems is that we have created a system opposite to the nature, where money flows from lower income people to higher income people. Most potent reason for it is INTEREST based economy. This affects poverty at the micro level and macro level as well. We as a poor nation are in viscous cycle of deficit budgets with money not even to pay our previous debt, but burrowing new money every year and paying interest of previous loans through loans again. Then there comes greed of the people (actually interest is also a very manifest form of greed), which makes them corrupt and makes their conscious allow them to usurp money meant for others, for the less advantageous, for the kids, for the sicks, for the development etc.... Another form of greed lies with the enterprenuers, who out of their greed tend to maximise their profit, by paying less equitably to their employees and whenever possible by exploiting resources meant for others, illegally. This tendency, prevails at the individual level also..... So, if we can kill this greed, we can kill poverty. T The solution is to promote charity (could be in a meaningful way, not direct - as said earlier) and stop interest & usury in any form.

It can be eradicated with committed efforts from the heads of Govts. and politicians of the respective countries. Developed countries have the responsibility to extend their help in eradicating the poverty. Regional imbalances have to be answered. UNO unfortunately failing to draw a plan of action in that direction. It became puppet in the hands of the super powers USA in particular. USA is very passionate to go on declaring war against the countries on some pretext or other. Instead USA shall declare war against the poverty and every other nation will extend their help in that direction. In such a case poverty can definitely be eradicated from the globe. I am awaiting for the day to really happen.

I appreciate and Iam also of the view that as Mr Murlidharan. Why dont we see cuba a small country where health wealth ad happiness are there to a great extent. It may not be during our times but defenitely things will change to some extent. The poverty is a word of comparison.even in usa there are poor people but they have their basic amenities. In India our political will is lacking and once we have politically motivated people to bring Indians in the forefront through education we will not be able to achieve it however its is possible with great billionaires and corporates who could contribute towards this. A tall aim but we have to pursue towards it holistically.

Not to forget that 1/40th is the mandatory minimum to be spent. Islam and Humanity in general preaches to spend much more, if one sees the need. The example was set by Ansar in Madinah, when the gave half of all their possessions to the Muhajirs (migrants) from Makkah.

Yes for sure,But again we shouldnt blame govt for this,If somebody at the age of 55 is il-literate & helpless govt can give him education & even loads of money,What govt can do is give them BPL'S compensation to fund thier food,I think that's appreciating,Apart we should build the strong strategies, collect small funds & provide education to the poor to remove il-leteracy first...Every thing comes second

Yes, but for that first we have to accept & know the similarities between Islam & other religions. Islam preaches the concept of Zakat i.e., to give 2 & a half percent of ones money in charity. Think if each and everybody gives the same amount in charity then within a short span of time poverty will end in the whole world insha Allah (if God Wills). Not only that if one has 40 lambs he has to give one lamb in charity and the list goes on about clothes, gold etc.

Around 2000 Pfizer corporation funded a project to study the reasons for poverty in the world. The report came out with the conclusion that poverty exists even now not because it cannot be erradicated but there is lack of education which aggriveates poverty. So one has to work up the educational institutions and erradicate illetracy from the face of earth to achieve poverty alleviation.

Eradicating poverty is certainly possible, if we ensure flow of money from higher income people to lower income people not the reverse. This can be achieved by: 1. Ensuring Fair Compensation for the work done/service offered 2. Ensuring that employers provide proper housing, healthcare and education facilities to the employees. 3. Even lower job people are compensated fairly like a rickshaw puller, a house maid etc (atleast a binding fair minimum wage) 4. Encourage rich to spend on the welfare of low income people. Make a minimum percentage spend mandatory (charity) 5. Discourage/Stop flow of money from low income people to high income people (usuary/interest) 6. Stop/discourage stagnation of money

We had and will have numerous preachers (religious non religious) to tell what we should do with our money wealth desires. This has not worked, the Russian model has crashed the Chinese are following limited market economy trying to push cheap; use and throw industrial products which is creating great environmental impact. In an economy they are three distinct layers where money is created :- as follows, 1) Farming fishing dairy product etc. 2) Mining activities & Industrial production. 3) Service sector like railways telecom etc. Market economy moves from higher gradient to lower a capitalist invest his capital be it farms mining or telecom purely for profit making be it driven by greed or whatever. The finance of a country is regulated by the government the efficiency of the government can elevate or reduce poverty to an extent. Throughout the world, it’s been observed government activities seldom make profit!! Resulting to additional taxes making the weak, weaker or poor, poorer; being a ownerless venture. Standing outside ruling team how can anyone dictate any terms to leaders (rulers)? Hopes, wishes, prayers are good to keep you away from getting frustrated, this is for weaker people as soon as they start to gain strength they become greedy, cunning, jealous, envious . As no single man can create wealth so he has to subscribe to greed cunningness etc. else he cannot from a team. So this happens to politicians, industrialist, corporate social worker (NGO) etc. There is no way to kill, "greed". What to do?

Poverty will never end in the world. First there are so many disparities in the world. 10% of the people have 90% of the wealth and applies equally to countries. And the number of people who cannot afford two square meals a day are in tens of millions spread over hundred countries or more. Before these people can be elevated to above-poverty level, the world will certainly end. But if we bring the population under control first, there is a small glimmer of hope.

Poverty will never end in the world. Early human histories tell of masters and slaves. Man is born of or to different qualities or possessions. Man, if will act with greed in his heart and not care about his fellowman, the normal thinking is to compromise a little bit, but gain more out of the situation. Today, we witness powerful, rich countries protect their own economic interests thru concessions a bit, dictate more on the outcome of the concessions. If man will see the need of his fellowman with purity in his heart, not what he will gain from helping his fellowman, perhaps, the chance of ending poverty will happen in that particular generation.

So long as we have brilliant politicians even thinking to get rid of poverty is a distant dream. If poverty is resolved then mostly all the problems would be resolved and we (the !!! citizens !!!) can demand more So better keep them busy in fighting poverty. Here is the example of Sh Anna Hazare who stood against these brilliant politicians who have all united and stood up against him to make sane person insane.
